Investigation And Development Of A Transient Absorber Diode Using Gallium Arsenide, Rahil Hasan, James A. Cooper Jr. Aug 1992

Investigation And Development Of A Transient Absorber Diode Using Gallium Arsenide, Rahil Hasan, James A. Cooper Jr.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The design and development of a transient absorber, abbreviated transorb, is presented. The device is required to protect components from voltage transients up tc 150 A at 60 V. The design is implemented using back-to-back p-i-n diodes. A three mask;-step fabrication sequence is used. Device characterization and simulation shout that a device of area 0.04cm2 meets the required specifications. We are successfuly ablle to operate devices of area less than 10-4cm2 at the required current densities. Devices of larger areas are subject to material limitations with current gallium arsenide technology.

A Decision Boundary Method For Embedding Selection, W. Hsu, L. S. Hsu, M. F. Tenorio Aug 1992

A Decision Boundary Method For Embedding Selection, W. Hsu, L. S. Hsu, M. F. Tenorio

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Previously, we have presented a method for embedding selection based on cluster analysis. In this paper, we described an embedding selection method based on a feature reduction transformation matrix. This method extracts features that are important for maintaining decision boundaries in the supervised clusters. Experimentally, we demonstrate that our method allow accurate prediction of the Mackay-Glass chaotic time series. Three important properties of the feature reduction transformation are proved in this paper.

A Content Validity Analysis Of The University Of Texas-Pan American English 1320 Grammar And Usage Exam, Cynthia Eilene Elder Aug 1992

A Content Validity Analysis Of The University Of Texas-Pan American English 1320 Grammar And Usage Exam, Cynthia Eilene Elder

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study examines the degree of content validity of the grammar and usage exam administered to The University of Texas-Pan American's developmental writing classes (English 1320). Final exam essays from the freshman composition course (English 1301) were divided into groups according to their scores and examined for the occurrence of adjective agreement, apostrophe, pronoun usage, punctuation of clause, sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, and tense usage errors, which are tested on the exam. An Analysis of Variance was then calculated for each error type; none of the error types proved statistically significant at the.05 level. The students within each group did …

The Effect Of Public Posting And Supervisor Recognition On Treatment Team Performance In A Mental Health Institution, Susan Mencarelli Aug 1992

The Effect Of Public Posting And Supervisor Recognition On Treatment Team Performance In A Mental Health Institution, Susan Mencarelli

Masters Theses

This study compared the effects of public posting and supervisor recognition on the performance of professional staff in a mental health institution. Eleven indicators of successful performance in the writing of patient treatment plans were established after an analysis of existing standards. Seven treatment teams comprised the subjects of the study and included psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, activity therapists, and residential care aides. Group performance data were used. The measurement and scoring systems which were developed proved to be highly reliable.

Neither form of performance feedback resulted in consistent improvement in performance on any of the eleven indicators. This …

Mdma And Memory: The Acute And Chronic Effects Of Mdma In Pigeons Performing Under A Delayed-Matching-To-Sample Procedure, Mark Lesage Aug 1992

Mdma And Memory: The Acute And Chronic Effects Of Mdma In Pigeons Performing Under A Delayed-Matching-To-Sample Procedure, Mark Lesage

Masters Theses

The physiological effects of (+) 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) have been studied extensively. The behavioral effects of MDMA, however, have not been examined in detail. In an attempt to gain further information about its behavioral effects, the acute and chronic effects of MDMA were examined in pigeons responding under a delayed-matching-to-sample procedure with 0-, 3-, and 6-s delays. In the absence of drug, accuracy (percentage o f correct responses) was inversely related to delay length. When administered pre-chronically, MDMA (0.32 to 5.6 mg/kg) decreased accuracy and response rates at higher doses. Tolerance developed following chronic exposure to 3.2 mg/kg. Performance did not …

The Effects Of Public-Posted Feedback On The Use Of A Photocopy Machine By Faculty In An Academic Department, Shijing Hu

Masters Theses

This study assessed the effects of a public-posting intervention on photocopy machine use by faculty members in an academic department. Public posting included posting of a chart that displayed number of copies made each week by individual faculty members along with the average cumulative rate of copying for previous weeks for each person. The intervention was applied in an A-B-A reversal design where data were collected prior to the intervention under usual conditions (A), during public posting (B), and after the public posting intervention was removed and usual conditions were restored (A). The results indicated that: (1) number of copies …

A Study Of The Transfer Matrix Method For The Classical Statistical Mechanics Of One Dimensional Systems, Dietmar R.A. Johlen Aug 1992

A Study Of The Transfer Matrix Method For The Classical Statistical Mechanics Of One Dimensional Systems, Dietmar R.A. Johlen

Masters Theses

Two formalisms using the transfer matrix technique, the first one by Gupta and Sutherland (1976) and the second one by Guyer and Miller (1979), are investigated and a proof is given for their equivalence.

Furthermore, it is pointed out that previous studies neglected the difficulties that arise from nonhermitian pseudo Hamiltonian. This work proves that the same results are obtained by taking into account the nonhermiticity of the pseudo Hamiltonian.

Thus, the transfer integral technique is extended to nonhermitian pseudo Hamiltonians.

A Theoretic Analysis Of Corporate Auctioneers Liability Regimes, Randall Thomas, Robert G. Hansen Aug 1992

A Theoretic Analysis Of Corporate Auctioneers Liability Regimes, Randall Thomas, Robert G. Hansen

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

In Schneider v. Lazard Freres & Co. a New York appellate court greatly expanded the liability of investment advisers working as corporate auctioneers. Under this new legal regime, auctioneer/advisers accused of simple negligence are exposed to billions of dollars of potential legal liabilities. This article first reviews the existing law covering auctioneer/advisers and shows that the Schneider decision conflicts with the law governing general auctioneers and with the law governing the role of advisers and directors during the sale of the corporate control. Next, using an auction-theoretic framework, this Article shows that Schneider will likely result in: (1) increased indemnification …

Evidence Of Regional Structural Controls On Vent Distribution: Springerville Volcanic Field, Arizona, Charles B. Connor, Christopher Condit, Larry S. Crumpler, Jayne C. Aubele

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Quantitative analysis of the geographic distribution of vents and comparison with regional structural, petrologic, and vent age data provide insight into the processes governing the emplacement of vents in the Springerville volcanic field, Arizona. A total of 409 vents in the Springerville volcanic field (SVF) have a mean distance to nearest neighbor vents of 955 m, a much closer spacing than is common in some platform‐type volcanic fields. Based upon a cluster analysis search radius parameter of 4500 m, these vents comprise seven geographic clusters, with only five outlying vents occurring in the entire field. Cinder cone clusters in the …

Behavior Of Nutrients And Trace Metals In Muck Sediments From A Florida Lagoon, Huan Feng Aug 1992

Behavior Of Nutrients And Trace Metals In Muck Sediments From A Florida Lagoon, Huan Feng

Theses and Dissertations

Fine-grained, organic-rich sediments are a potentially importment reservoir for nutrients and contaminants in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida. However, little is known about the behavior of these chemical species and whether they can be released to the overlying water column. In that regard, this study had two objectives: (1 ) to determine the concentrations of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus species and some metals in representative muck deposits and the fluxes of these species to the overlying waters of the Indian River Lagoon; and (2) to identify the mechanism controlling concentrations of nutrients and trace metals in these muck deposits. Results …

The Effect Of Combat On The Work/Rest Schedules And Fatigue Of A-6 And F-14 Aviators During Operation Desert Shield/Storm, David F. Neri, Scott A. Shappell Aug 1992

The Effect Of Combat On The Work/Rest Schedules And Fatigue Of A-6 And F-14 Aviators During Operation Desert Shield/Storm, David F. Neri, Scott A. Shappell

Publications

During Operation Desert Shield/Storm, A-6 and F-14 aviators aboard USS AMERICA completed daily activity logs and provided subjective measures of fatigue. Aviators flew frequently at night during Desert Storm, but without substantial sleep-related fatigue or problems. A likely contributing factor was the large number of naval aviation assets brought into the combat theater, allowing workload to be shared and activity and rest times to be properly managed. However, raster plots of the data suggest that there may have been an additional contributing factor. The AMERICA travelled eastward from the east coast through seven time zones and became involved in combat …

Some Natural Confusions About Natural Law, Philip Soper Aug 1992

Some Natural Confusions About Natural Law, Philip Soper

Michigan Law Review

To describe this renewed interest in natural law as a resurgence does imply, no doubt, that the ideas associated with the concept are too vital to be put permanently to rest; but resurgence also implies that natural law, for whatever reason, has been assigned the role of challenger to the reigning orthodoxy, rather than that of defending champ. By and large, this inference about the role assigned to natural law by the general public is, I think, correct. Natural law seems to evoke a degree of skepticism in our society that forces any theory that goes by the name to …

Allocation Of Loss Due To Fraudulent Wholesale Wire Transfers: Is There A Negligence Action Against A Beneficiary's Bank After Article 4a Of The Uniform Commercial Code?, Robert M. Lewis Aug 1992

Allocation Of Loss Due To Fraudulent Wholesale Wire Transfers: Is There A Negligence Action Against A Beneficiary's Bank After Article 4a Of The Uniform Commercial Code?, Robert M. Lewis

Michigan Law Review

This Note argues that where a bank reasonably should have known of a fraud but still pays out a wire transfer to an unauthorized recipient, common law negligence should provide a basis for recovery despite the absence of an explicit Code provision imposing liability on the bank. Part I examines the UCC's language itself and analyzes possible cases, under 4A and under articles 3 and 4 by analogy, and discusses the applicability of these other parts of the UCC to wire transfers. Part II examines how extra-Code regulatory systems and the common law would determine wire transfer liability. Part II …

The Implementation Of The Reagan Administration's Counterterrorist Policy, Howard Lawrence Steinberg Aug 1992

The Implementation Of The Reagan Administration's Counterterrorist Policy, Howard Lawrence Steinberg

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the implementation of President Ronald Reagan's active counterterrorist policy. The paper attempts to determine why the stated policy of "swift and effective retribution" was not carried out. This paper concentrates on the discrepancies between the numerous statements advocating retaliation made by Reagan and his top officials and the failure of these officials to administer the necessary orders for such retaliatory policies. This research indicated numerous causes, although the primary cause is attributed to the divergent opinions of the reticent Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger and the more retributive views of the two successive Secretaries of State, Alexander …

Integrating Computer Generated Animation And Videography, Annemaria Incorvia Aug 1992

Integrating Computer Generated Animation And Videography, Annemaria Incorvia

Theses

This thesis developed as a personal exploration in the compositing effects of computer generated imagery, traditional cel animation, and videography. Through trial, great error, and much modification, this collaboration evolved. As a product of transition and progression, it can be said, it echoes the absolute design process. In order to create a visually aesthetic ensemble while incorporating several techniques, each exploration was to support the whole in its depiction. Personal aesthetics and technical limitations determined the inclusion or abstraction of any particular approach, and to what degree, if any, that it would be used, modified or manipulated. Finally, these decisions …

Stories Versus Theories At The Cardozo Evidence Conference: It’S Just Another Metaphor To Me, L. H. Larue

Cardozo Law Review

Cardozo Law School was host to an evidence conference on March 24-26, 1991. The papers have been published, so the conference has been duly memorialized. However, the conference had a "subtext" that differed from the "text," that is, the theme of the conference, judging from the hallway gossip, differed from the officially proclaimed theme; if one reads the published text carefully, one can see the subtext within the text, the unofficial theme alongside the official theme. I asked the editors of this Review to let me record my evaluation of the unofficial theme, so that it may have equal status …

A Curious Document Recently Discovered In The Archives, Peter Tillers

Cardozo Law Review

The document reproduced below, which appears to be a letter written by Peter Pilgrim to "Lash, " was recently discovered in the archives of the library of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. Peter Pilgrim is the late Doctor of Facts at Cardozo. "Lash" is probably L.H. LaRue, Story Professor of Law at Washli University. Professor LaRue is also known as the Delphic Oracle of Lex, possibly because no one knows for sure what the letters "L.H." represent. The annotations to the text of the putative letter appear to be a mixture of notes by its author and comments …
