Workplace Education Programs In Small- And Medium-Sized Michigan Firms, Kevin Hollenbeck, William Anderson
Workplace Education Programs In Small- And Medium-Sized Michigan Firms, Kevin Hollenbeck, William Anderson
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper presents a systematic, baseline picture of workplace education programs in small and medium-sized businesses (less than 500 employees) in Michigan. Specifically, it addresses why some firms are offering and other firms are not offering workplace education programs, what are the characteristics of the programs being provided, and what are the impacts of these programs on firms and employees. The paper draws upon two data sources. Case studies of 28 Michigan businesses were undertaken between May 1991 and July 1992 and a combination mail/telephone survey of small businesses in Michigan was conducted in early 1992. The paper finds that …

Perceived Importance Of Effective Teaching Competencies Used In Secondary Education And A Comparison Of Usage Between General And Vocational Secondary Teachers, Leroy Eldon Sayer
Perceived Importance Of Effective Teaching Competencies Used In Secondary Education And A Comparison Of Usage Between General And Vocational Secondary Teachers, Leroy Eldon Sayer
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to identify and rank effective teaching competencies by secondary vocational teachers, general secondary teachers, teacher educators, and State Department of Education supervisors, and to determine if there was a difference in teaching effectiveness between secondary vocational and general secondary teachers as measured in the classroom, utilizing the COKER (Classroom Observations Keyed for Effectiveness Research). An instrument was constructed from a variety of sources, primarily from the University of Toledo competency indicators as noted by Medley, Coker, and Soar (1984). This list of 28 competencies was completed by secondary vocational teachers from selected high schools …
Untenable Status Of Corporate Governance Listing Standards Under The Securities Exchange Act, Douglas C. Michael
Untenable Status Of Corporate Governance Listing Standards Under The Securities Exchange Act, Douglas C. Michael
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
United States securities markets operate under a system of supervised self-regulation created by the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (Exchange Act). That system includes substantive regulation of the traders and the issuers of securities traded in those markets through the use of listing standards.
These listing standards have a unique status. They are part of a self-regulatory system, but are not classic self-regulation. The markets do not govern the traders of which it consists; rather, it governs outsiders—the issuers. The markets and the Securities and Exchange Commissions have sought to control issuers in ways not clearly related to trading in …

Juvenile Justice: An Examination Of Disparities In Dispositions, Michael P. Brown
Juvenile Justice: An Examination Of Disparities In Dispositions, Michael P. Brown
Dissertations
The present study tests the utility of status characteristics and expectation states theory in the context of the juvenile court. The theory contends that there is dispositional certainty when case related factors are consistently rated serious or nonserious; the severity of the sanction will reflect the seriousness of the case. However, the likelihood of sentencing disparities based on individual characteristics (e.g., race and SES) increases as case related factors become increasingly inconsistent, with some rated serious and others rated nonserious.
Data to test this theory were collected from the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Court, Kalamazoo, Michigan in June and July, 1990. …
Applied Relaxation Training In The Treatment Of Genital Herpes, Kent A. Koehn
Applied Relaxation Training In The Treatment Of Genital Herpes, Kent A. Koehn
Dissertations
Four individuals with frequent recurrences of genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) were trained in Applied Relaxation (AR). Participants included in the research were all women, had been diagnosed with herpes at least one year prior to the study, experienced 6 or more outbreaks annually, and were not taking antiviral medications.
The experiment employed a multiple baseline across subjects design with individual baselines of 11, 13, 17, and 21 weeks. Participants maintained daily diary recordings of the frequency, duration, and severity of their herpes activity from baseline until a minimum of three months post-treatment.
Treatment consisted of 10 individual AR sessions. …
Foster Parents’ Experience Of Loss And Their Coping Response Style, Kathleen M. Kirby
Foster Parents’ Experience Of Loss And Their Coping Response Style, Kathleen M. Kirby
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the subjective experience of emotional and physical stress reported by foster parents that may be caused by serial placements of foster children. It also addressed the coping response mechanisms and style of foster parents that may promote successful endurance of serial losses. In addition, the relationship between specific coping responses of foster parents was investigated to determine if the circumstances of placement or characteristics of foster parents interact to exacerbate or remediate emotional/physical stress.
Demographics were tabulated for Michigan foster parents including age, family income, religious affiliation, racial/cultural identification, marital status, educational …
The Rise And Decline Of Mental Health Hospitals In The State Of Michigan, Gerald H. Smith
The Rise And Decline Of Mental Health Hospitals In The State Of Michigan, Gerald H. Smith
Dissertations
The State of Michigan has been partially responsible for the treatment of the mentally ill population since 1832, when Wayne County General Hospital opened its doors. The state government made a commitment to care for the afflicted, and at the same time provide an opportunity for other individuals to participate in their treatment. Eventually this commitment led to the establishment of employment for many citizens, and gradually, over the decades, a mental health bureaucracy emerged. It was necessary to hire not only professional staff, but also support staff such as food services, housekeeping, maintenance, and the like. Mental health facilities …
Retrofilling Materials : The Effects Of Two Setting Times On The Degree Of Dye Leakage Of Retrograde Filling Materials, Robert K. Higa
Retrofilling Materials : The Effects Of Two Setting Times On The Degree Of Dye Leakage Of Retrograde Filling Materials, Robert K. Higa
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Sealing of the root canal system is usually accomplished by the conservative endodontic approach. Cases where it is impossible to treat nonsurgically are usually treated surgically by an apicoectomy and retrofill. There is a lot of controversy in the literature over which retrofilling material is closest to ideal. Presently, the most popular materials seem to be Amalgam, Super EBA, and IRM. For this reason, these materials were chosen for this study to evaluate the leakage potential at two different time intervals to see if setting time of the material had any influence on the amount of leakage.

Measured Electricity Savings Of Refrigerator Replacement: Case Study And Analysis, Florida Solar Energy Center, Ted Stedman
Measured Electricity Savings Of Refrigerator Replacement: Case Study And Analysis, Florida Solar Energy Center, Ted Stedman
FSEC Energy Research Center®
There are approximately seven million refrigerator-freezers in the State of Florida. The average demand of these units is at least 1,000 MW. The average life of a residential refrigerator is approximately 20 years (U.S. DOE, 1989). At least 25% of Florida's existing stock are old inefficient units built before the advent of recent appliance efficiency standards. The least efficient are existing models of which approximately 5% of the stock is replaced each year. This represents a significant opportunity for efficiency improvement since recently established standards will greatly improve refrigerator efficiency by 1993 (NAECA, 1987). A number of studies have identified …
Habitat, Diurnal, And Tidal Effects On The Behavior Of Glaucous- Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens), Dean Pearson
Habitat, Diurnal, And Tidal Effects On The Behavior Of Glaucous- Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens), Dean Pearson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of habitat, time of day and tide on the behavior of Glaucous-winged gulls nesting on Protection Island, Jefferson County, Washington. During the period of March - June, 1991, more gulls were present in the colony and their rates of behavior were greater during the morning and evening hours than during midday.
Though gull numbers and their rates of behavior in the colony tended to increase with tidal cycle, a plateau in these numbers and rates consistently occurred between +0.3m to +1.2m above mean tide.

Evaluation Of Digital Image Compression Algorithms For Use On Lap Top Computers, Bernard V. Brower
Evaluation Of Digital Image Compression Algorithms For Use On Lap Top Computers, Bernard V. Brower
Theses
A technique for the evaluation of image compression algorithms was developed. This technique was then applied in the evaluation of six image compression algorithms (ARIDPCM, ISO/JPEG DCT, zonal DCT, proprietary wavelet, proprietary sub-band coding and the proprietary DCT). Of the six algorithms evaluated, the Wavelet algorithm performed the best on average in image quality at all bit rates. The JPEG DCT was concluded to be the most useful algorithm because of its performance and the advantages that come with being an international standard.
Aberrations Of Thick Phase Holographic Optical Elements, Hong Ouyang
Aberrations Of Thick Phase Holographic Optical Elements, Hong Ouyang
Theses
The wavefront quality of reconstructions from thick holographic optical elements (HOEs) is examined both theoretically and experimentally. The goal of this thesis is to verify the equations of the third-order aberration of HOE's by directly examining the reconstructed wavefront. In addition, possible limitations of holographic materials on HOE performance at low F-numbers and for various recording geometries are determined. The third objective is to test the wavelength shift aberration and to establish the extent to which misalignment can be used to compensate the aberration due to a shift in wavelength.
An Investigation Of Source Memory In Learning Disabled Children, Roseanne Hatt Ewing
An Investigation Of Source Memory In Learning Disabled Children, Roseanne Hatt Ewing
Student Work
Recognition memory and memory for source information were examined in learning disabled (LD) and nondisabled (NLD) children in two experimental conditions. In the listen-listen condition (external source monitoring), subjects watched a videotape in which two girls completed sentences that were constructed so as to highly constrain a terminal noun. In the think-listen condition (reality monitoring), subjects were asked to imagine themselves completing some sentences and to listen as a girl on the videotape completed other sentences. In each of the two experimental conditions, half of the stimuli were presented once, and half were presented twice. Recognition memory and source memory …

Review: 'Theory Of Dielectric Optical Waveguides,' 2nd Edition, By Dietrich Marcuse, Bradley D. Duncan
Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications
I suppose I ought to say up front that while preparing this review I often found myself feeling very much like a student evaluating his teacher. After all, it was, in part, the first edition of Dietrich Marcuse's Theory of Dielectric Optical Waveguides (among a handful of other similar texts) from which I first studied the principles of optical waveguide theory under the demanding, yet patient and graceful guidance of Dr. Ahmad Safaai-Jazi. Thus with the utmost respect for a teacher whom I have never met, I shall try to faithfully share my thoughts and feelings regarding the second edition …
The Left Critique Of Normativity: A Comment, Mark V. Tushnet
The Left Critique Of Normativity: A Comment, Mark V. Tushnet
Michigan Law Review
"In today's legal academy, the critique of normativity is associated with the left." The preceding sentence, which I have constructed to summarize the starting point of this essay, is both largely true and arguably incoherent. The incoherence occurs because describing a position as "the left" connotes values like egalitarianism, which are obviously normative. This essay examines the ways in which some writers associated with the left in the legal academy have tried to resolve the incoherence. The first Part shows that these writers can be identified with the left even in their critiques of normativity and also shows that they …
Moral Responsibility In The Age Of Bureaucracy, David Luban, Alan Strudler, David Wasserman
Moral Responsibility In The Age Of Bureaucracy, David Luban, Alan Strudler, David Wasserman
Michigan Law Review
No twentieth-century writer has thought so deeply, or so yearningly, about natural law as Franz Kafka. Kafka's is a world in which we seek desperately to know the natural law that is sovereign in human affairs but find that knowledge of the law is withheld from us. For this reason, we lead our lives in a state of, if not original sin, then original guilt - guilt for violating the law, or perhaps guilt for not knowing the law, despite the fact that we wish to know it.
The Trial is Kafka's greatest elaboration of this theme. Joseph K. is …
Justifiably Punishing The Justified, Heidi M. Hurd
Justifiably Punishing The Justified, Heidi M. Hurd
Michigan Law Review
Contemporary moral philosophy, political theory, and jurisprudence have converged to create a quite baffling dilemma. This dilemma is generated by the apparent incompatibility of three principles, each of which grounds features of our system of law and government, and each of which carries substantial normative weight. The first I shall call the punishment principle - a moral principle, doctrinally entrenched in American criminal and civil law, which holds that individuals who are morally justified in their actions ought not to be blamed or punished for those actions. The second is the principle of the rule of law - a complex …
Injunctive Relief For Constitutional Violations: Does The Civil Service Reform Act Preclude Equitable Remedies?, Elizabeth A. Wells
Injunctive Relief For Constitutional Violations: Does The Civil Service Reform Act Preclude Equitable Remedies?, Elizabeth A. Wells
Michigan Law Review
This Note argues that the federal courts retain power to furnish equitable relief for constitutional violations to ensure adequate protection of federal employees' rights. Statutory procedures and remedies available under the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 (CSRA) and related legislation should preempt judicially created equitable relief only where the government or federal agency affirmatively demonstrates that these procedures are constitutionally sufficient. Part I canvasses the current lower court response to the question of preclusion and notes the various routes taken by the courts in inferring congressional intent to preempt. This Part discusses varying interpretations of the Civil Service Reform …
