Various systems of anthropometry have been developed through the years in an attempt to elucidate important characteristics of the human dentition. Few methods are currently relied upon as valuable indicators of age, race or sex; The computerized study of anterior tooth positions is an attempt at further elucidation of age, race and sex characteristics. Bite marks in wax from a general population sample of known age, race and sex are the basis for this computerized study. The computerized procedure allows for the examination of minute variation in tooth position. Twelve teeth in total are analyzed for every specimen.

Velocity modulation laser spectroscopy has proven to be a successful spectroscopic technique for the study of molecular ions; indeed, it has become the conventional technique. However, there are a number of limitations to velocity modulation in its conventional form. First, there is a background arising from r.f. pick-up or optical emission. Because the background is at the same frequency as the desired signals, the background is hard to eliminate. Fluctuations in the background level can make it difficult to detect signals. Second, in many experiments the dominant source of noise is the detector, and sensitive detectors are often inconveniently slow. …

Although much has been written on the ways drama can be used in the English classroom, little has focused on the teaching of poetry using dramatic techniques. This paper provides a thirty-lesson creative drama unit for teaching poetry to high school students. The first three chapters introduce creative drama, review current research, and detail the background of the lessons. The bulk of the paper is contained in the fourth chapter, the lessons themselves. The early lessons introduce students to improvisation, poetry writing, spontaneity, and in-class performance. These skills are refined and used in later lessons to teach areas of poetry, …

Temporal and spatial patterns of age 0 threadfin shad (Dorosoma petenense) abundance and growth, in the Overton Arm of Lake Mead, were examined to evaluate the effects of resource availability on the young fish. This was part of the Lake Mead Fertilization Project, designed to assess feasability of increasing survivorship of juvenile shad by boosting phosphate, thereby increasing algal and zooplankton biomass, during the shad spawning period. Shad are the primary forage base for the striped bass (Morone saxatilis) and black bass (Macropterus salmoides); Weekly samples were taken from June to mid-August, in 1988 and 1989. Although the right to privacy is not actually enumerated in the Constitution, over a century of common law precedent and judicial interpretation has authorized certain personal activities as being outside the scope of governmental regulation. The constitutional defense of such freedoms have been regarded as Fourteenth Amendment due process guarantees to life, liberty, and property. In Griswold v. Connecticut, the Supreme Court ruled that proscribing the use of contraceptives to married couples was unduly burdensome. The thesis, using Husserlian phenomenology, presents a descriptive, analytical approach for theatrical works. The methodology consists of two parts: "feeling" and "meaning." "Feeling" covers the reader/viewer's experience of the work; "meaning" covers the source of that experience in the work. An introductory portion asks the analyzer to describe the autonomous aspects of the work. The evaluative conclusion asks the reader/viewer to describe change or lack thereof in the personal perspective; Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Edith Stein's treatment of empathy, and Ernst Cassirer's paradigms of cultural expression are all used to enrich the analytical approach. Recently, investigators interested in the most efficient means by which to present text on computer screens have directed their efforts, largely, toward optimizing the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) display format. This research has led to the discovery, for example, that overlapping information across segments interferes with comprehension. The present study further investigates this issue by comparing RSVP to another frequently used text display format, the leading format. The leading format differs from RSVP with overlapping information in that it does not discriminate between text segments that end with words being truncated and those that do not. The results of …

In this thesis we introduce a modified version of Director String Calculus (MDSC) which preserves the applicative structure of the original lambda terms and captures the strong reduction as opposed to weak reduction of the original Director String Calculus (DSC). Furthermore, our reduction system provides an environment which supports the nonatomic nature of substitution operation and hence can lend itself to parallel and optimal reduction. We shall compare our reduction method with other reduction methods, and discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of our method.

An optimal retrieval algorithm for relational database queries is a highly sought after ideal. A great amount of research has been applied in the quest for a better, faster, and cheaper universal retrieval scheme. Unfortunately there is no panacea, no single "optimal" method. With the many different database languages we find a variety of retrieval algorithms. This thesis explores heuristic methods for optimizing relational database query algorithms. It combines individual works on heuristics, cost modeling, decomposition, and join optimization. Lastly it assesses these optimization methods.

Determination Of The Thermoneutral Zone In Young Males And Females, Darrell Allan Baggs

To determine the thermoneutral zone (TNZ) in young men and women, 14 women and 6 men between the ages of 18 and 37 were studied. Rectal temperature, skin temperature (seven sites), heart rate, blood pressure, VO2 (ml/kg/min), and a perceived comfort index were measured while resting for 2 hours in an environmental room. Subjects were exposed to 7 different air temperatures ranging from 15 to 36{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C. Values for the measurements were observed at each temperature. The estimated thermoneutral zone (TNZ) for the males in this study ranged between approximately 27 and 30{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C and for the females between 26 and 31.5{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C.

Duct silencers must reduce sound levels enough to be noticed by the human ear. By placing the appropriate duct silencer in the air-conditioning duct system, sound levels in rooms where noise is a problem can be significantly reduced. Only through insertion loss measurements can the appropriate silencer be determined for the desired noise reduction; This thesis involves the modification and qualification of the reverberation chamber in the Multi-Function Lab at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, for the purpose of creating a controlled sound testing environment. This study examines the effect of training on referrals to an outpatient adolescent sexual offender treatment program. Fifty-two juvenile court probation officers were trained to assess and identify adolescent sex offenders who met program referral criteria. Pre- and post-training tests were administered to measure the effect of training on a subject's knowledge and understanding of sex offender assessment. Utilizing the Juvenile Sexual Offender Decision Criteria Form (University of Washington, 1986), referrals before and following training were evaluated to determine if they met program criteria. Analysis of the data suggested that training improved subjects' knowledge and understanding, but not their ability …

There is ongoing conceptual controversy between mandatory and voluntary continuing education (CE) for relicensure of nurses. This controversy was studied by Arneson in 1979 and 1981, but not reported until 1985. This present research is a replication of Arneson's studies. The study addresses nurses' attitudes concerning mandatory CE (MCE) and examines relationships between professional, personal, and demographic factors that affect these attitudes; The study population was nurses registered in the state of Nevada. A sample of 600 nurses was chosen using a stratified random selection method from a list of all Nevada nurses. The data were collected via mailed questionnaires. …

This summary examined the excess post-exercise O{dollar}\sb2{dollar} consumption (EPOC) after a 45 min exercise period at approximately 70% of VO{dollar}\sb{\rm 2max.}{dollar}, the EPOC after three 15 min exercise periods at the same intensity, and the thermic effect of a standard liquid meal (10 kcal{dollar}\cdot{dollar}kg{dollar}\sp{-1}{dollar} of LBM) in conjunction with the exercise. The length of the zone of flow establishment in a submerged, turbulent, buoyant, axisymmetric jet issuing into a quiescent ambient fluid was investigated using a Laser Doppler Anemometer and microthermocouple probe. Also, velocity and temperature profiles were measured through various cross-sections of the jet; A 3-dimensional traversing mechanism with feedback and interface circuitry was constructed and then controlled by an 80286 microcomputer. Dance creators, their contributions to the art, as well as salient characteristics of each period are discussed. Fossil woodrat middens from a wash near Searchlight Nevada were used to reconstruct the timing and magnitude of vegetation change using Larrea tridentata, Coleogyne ramosissima, and Yucca sp. The study revealed that Coleogyne appeared in the midden at 600 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 50 yr B.P., and full Coleogyne community establishment occurred by 470 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 60 yr B.P. The increase in Coleogyne was coincident with the climatic shifts during the Little Ice Age, 1250 A.D. to 1800 A.D., and was probably caused by increased precipitation.

In the fall of 1990, a survey was conducted to examine the attitudes of 79 college students toward the world food crisis. The findings from this study were then compared with the results from a study conducted in 1975 which examined the attitudes of 72 college students toward the world food crisis. The survey questionnaire constructed for the 1975 study was used in the 1990 study. In the 1990 study, only two categories showed significant change: (1) subjects felt less personally threatened by the food crisis than in 1975, and (2) respondents felt less sure that population control offered any …

This research project was designed to examine the effects changes in economic conditions--notably, changes which occurred during the recession of the early 1980s--have had on patterns of social interaction in rural, specifically mining-dependent communities. The study was conducted in two communities located in Northeastern Minnesota during the spring of 1990. Data were gathered via a mailed questionnaire, which was developed to assess patterns of social interaction before, during, and after the recession. Imitation, a specific program of writing instruction, offers students the benefits of a discourse community that stretches from Aristotle to Stephen King The arrangement of imitation in a taxonomy directs students through specific steps toward the goal of originality. This taxonomy employs textual models, such as the progymnasmata, and the living model, the writing teacher, writing. To use imitation most successfully, the teacher should understand the rhetorical theory to which she subscribes. Imitation enhances the objective, the transactional and the epistemic theories, but the subjective rhetoric is so dependent on individual inspiration that imitation becomes nearly useless. This study explores ways in which women balance the demands of graduate school with other social roles and examines factors affecting role conflicts they encounter. Based on responses from a mail questionnaire, the survey describes experiences of 461 women graduate students at University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1989. Moving beyond research that often considered only structural indicators as causes of role conflict, traditional and egalitarian gender ideologies within marriage are shown to have significant effect on wife-student role conflict.
