Adaptive Control Of Decouplable Systems And Nonlinear Flight Control Systems, Sahjendra N. Singh, William R. Wells

This paper treats the question of output trajectory tracking in nonlinear systems in the presence of uncertainty. It is assumed that the nominal system is decouplable using state variable feedback. An adaptive control law is derived such that in the closed-loop system, output vector asymptotically converges to the given reference trajectory. The controller includes a dynamic system in the feedback path. This result is applied to design a flight control system to control roll angle, angle of attack and sideslip in rapid, nonlinear maneuvers of aircraft.

This study examined two alternative education programs designed to encourage at-risk students to remain in school. The purpose was to identify the ability of each program to change the school-related attitudes and orientations that may contribute to the student's dropping out of school (school and teacher bonding, academic self-concept, perception of opportunity, self-esteem); In addition to the five dependent variables measured, the number of credits earned as well as the holding power of the program, were examined and compared between the two groups as indication of educational engagement. The purpose of this study was to assess moral development of student athletes and nonathletes, employing James Rest's (1979, 1988) Defining Issues Test (DIT). Rest adapted Kohlberg's cognitive moral development theory to an objective measurement tool, the Defining Issues Test, which investigates moral judgment by examining the choices an individual makes in solving a series of moral dilemmas. Each subject obtained a Principled Morality Score which was interpreted as the relative importance attributed to principled moral considerations in making moral decisions. Participants for the study from intercollegiate athletics were from women's basketball and softball teams, and men's intercollegiate soccer and …

This research was a replication of original research conducted in 1981 by Dr. H. Wohlfarth at Elves' Memorial Child Development Centre in Edmonton, Ontario. The purpose of this study was to compare children's off-task behavior and physiological response in a normal elementary classroom setting with those in a prescribed classroom; C. H. Decker, a public K-5 elementary school, was the research facility. The study population were five 6-year old boys and six 6-year old girls. This study examines the role of friendship in Arthur Miller's work from his book of reportage, Situation Normal to his latest play, The Ride Down Mount Morgan, attempting to show that friendship is a central and recurrent topic in Miller's work, both dramatic and non-dramatic; In chapter 1, the "Introduction," I trace Miller's ideas about friendship, which were framed during the Depression and solidified through his study of American training bases in WWII. Gender Construction in Prime-Time Sitcoms: Roseanne and Murphy Brown analyzes gender portrayal in the highest rated situation comedies on network television in the United States in 1992. Billie's Message is a forty-five minute dance drama expressing through dance and narrative the life of Billie Holiday and the consequences of drug abuse in Holiday's life. It was created in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Education (MEd) degree. The project was presented on October 31 and November 1, 1987, in a public concert at the Judy Bayley Theatre at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Focus was placed on the life of Billie Holiday and the anti-drug message found in the last chapter of her autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues (Holiday, 1956). As the number of senior citizens entering retirement facilities increases, new and innovative approaches must be developed to address issues, past and present, affecting senior's quality of life. Findings of a prior study by Stock and Kanter (1980) indicate that responses on the Senior Apperception Techniques could be thematically categorized. The present study utilizes issues elicited by the Senior Apperception Technique to prompt life review and to provide care givers information useful in individualizing care within a retirement setting. This study evaluated the developmental gains of sixteen handicapped children who attended an early intervention program at an urban university. The subjects ranged in age from twenty-four months to sixty-six months and included a variety of conditions. A holistic, non-categorical developmental approach was utilized for intervention specifically focusing on early childhood special education. Parental involvement was encouraged. The subjects were taught by graduate students enrolled in a personnel preparation masters degree program, and consultation support services, such as physical therapy and speech therapy, were provided. Reaction Time And General Intellectual Ability: The Effects Of Cues On The Relationship, Nancy S Sirkin

This study examined the relationship between reaction time (RT) and intelligence. Fifteen female and nine male caucasian undergraduates and one black male undergraduate ranging in age from 19 to 38 served as subjects. The measure of intelligence was the Otis-Quick Scoring Mental Ability Test. An Apple MacIntosh personal computer was used to present stimuli and measure reaction time. There were four RT conditions; simple reaction time, and three complex conditions in which no cue appeared, a correct cue, or an incorrect cue appeared. A significant correlation was found between the correct cue/no cue difference score (r = {dollar}-{dollar}.43, p {dollar}<{dollar}.05).

A total of 249 samples of horn material from bighorn sheep was collected from nine locations. The concentrations of eight elements were determined in all samples by inductively coupled argon plasma spectroscopy. Year of horn growth was determined for 154 of the samples. All elements of concentrations varied significantly with respect to location. Some elements varied similarly to other elements with respect to location, but most locations exhibited unique element concentration profiles. Six of eight elements exhibited significant variation with respect to year of horn growth. A general pattern of annual element concentration fluctuation appeared to emerge. Generally, for a …

This thesis presents a comparative archeological analysis of window glass collections recovered from five historic archeological sites located in southern Nevada spanning the years from 1866 to the 1960s. The comparative analysis is used to test the validity of the chronological scheme created by other researchers. The analysis also establishes the frame work by which two specific research questions concerning the abandoned Mormon pioneer colony of West Point are evaluated; Additionally, this study presents, in a descriptive and temporal fashion, the history of West Point and its subsequent use and reuse by later upper Moapa Valley settlers. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effects of a death and dying course on the death anxiety levels of registered nurses; The primary prevention mode of intervention of the Neuman Systems Model and Bandura's belief-oriented approach of the social learning theory provided the framework for this study. Templer's Death Anxiety Scale (DAS) was administered prior to the program (pre-test), immediately following the program (post-test I), and six weeks after the completion of the program (post-test II); Recommendations for further study include: replication with a larger sample group and random sampling, development of a tool which accurately …

The difficult process of designing expert systems has caused the development of many useful expert system design tools. A new tool, called MPROLOG, has been developed into an expert system tool by giving the designer the power of a programming language, PROLOG, along with a method for specifying uncertainties. Descriptions of KEE and ART, two popular expert system design tools, and MPROLOG are presented along with a description of perhaps the most important phase of expert system design: knowledge acquisition. We have made the first measurement of the thermal energy charge transfer rate of Mo{dollar}\sp{6+}{dollar} and neutral argon. This measurement was carried out using a technique that combines the production of ions by laser ablation and an ion trap. The multiply charged ions produced by laser ablation are cooled by crossed beams collision. These ions are stored in a radio-frequency ion trap. The charge transfer rate is determined by measuring the rate of loss of stored ions in the trap. The charge transfer rate coefficient, k, of Mo{dollar}\sp{6+}{dollar} and Ar is 1.02(.10) {dollar}\times{dollar} 10{dollar}\sp{-10}{dollar}cm{dollar}\sp3{dollar}s{dollar}\sp{-1}{dollar}. A discussion of differing types of homeless found in America historically and the categories of homeless living in America today follows. Another aspect of this research is an examination of the accounts given by numerous homeless individuals currently residing in Las Vegas. These accounts are divided into several categories that emerged from the data which reflect some of the experiences and perspectives of those who live without the benefit of shelter.
