A Further Study Of Utah Asilidae, D. Elmer Johnson May 1936

A Further Study Of Utah Asilidae, D. Elmer Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

This study is based on a similar study made by Claudeous J. D. Brown in 1928, and published in 1929. The species he used have been rechecked, and additional ones have been studied. The species considered in this study represent three of the four subfamilies of North American Asilidae. These three subfamilies are Dasypogoninae, Laphriinae, and Asilinae. This study is limited to those species in the Brigham Young University Collections, and to species recorded in print. No claim is here made that all the forms inhabiting the state have been discovered, in fact the writer is well aware of the …

Chemical Analyses Of Some Oil-Well Waters Of Russell, Ellis And Trego Counties, H. Everett Runyon May 1936

Chemical Analyses Of Some Oil-Well Waters Of Russell, Ellis And Trego Counties, H. Everett Runyon

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Considerable work dealing with analysis of oil-well waters of other areas has been published, but to the knowledge of the author, none has been published dealing specifically with the waters of this area. While the waters dealt with in this paper are not far different from the waters of the Midcontinent area as a whole, there are certain differences which are noticeable. For instance strontium is found in the top waters of the Eldorado, Kansas field. None has been found in this area. The sulphate content of the top water here is very high. Both apparently cause trouble at times. …

Geneva Thorne : A Narrative Poem And A Picture Of Pioneer Life Revealing The Grave Foundations Of Culture In Kansas And The Slight Structure Built Thereupon, Olive Van Metre May 1936

Geneva Thorne : A Narrative Poem And A Picture Of Pioneer Life Revealing The Grave Foundations Of Culture In Kansas And The Slight Structure Built Thereupon, Olive Van Metre

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This thesis is a narrative poem about frontier life in Kansas. This thesis is not submitted with the thought that it will add one jot to the known facts of Kansas history; but it is offered in the hope of stirring appreciation for a type of pioneer who helped to lay the corner stone of Kansas. This type has always, in the telling of old tales, been left unsung; the still and even tenor of their lives does not attract attention. Yet they were here. and the contributed the richest blood that Kansas boasts today. To the youngest generation of …

The Development Of The Embryo Of Iris Missouriensis Nutt, C. Eugene Larsen May 1936

The Development Of The Embryo Of Iris Missouriensis Nutt, C. Eugene Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

There is but a single species of Iris native to Utah. This is Iris missouriensis Nutt. This plant was chosen for investigation because of its possible significance and because material of this species was readily available. The embryo of Iris missouriensis Nutt. shows some resemblance to the Lily type in its development of an irregular dividing suspensor. It also resembles the Orchid type in the usual development of sixteen cells before the dermatogen is cut off. In general development, however, the writer believes it to have an embryo sequence more similar to the Alisma type than to the dexcriptions given …

A Financial Study Of The City Of Hays, Ellis County, Kansas, Lorenze Randall Bingham May 1936

A Financial Study Of The City Of Hays, Ellis County, Kansas, Lorenze Randall Bingham

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The great problem of municipal finance with which a majority of our municipalities are confronted at the present time is a problem that can be attacked only through a slow process of analysis and investigation. Slashing of salaries, indiscriminate dispensing with the various services offered by the city in prosperous times, and increasing of bonded indebtedness will not in any sense provide a permanent solution to the problem. The difficulty is in tracing the course of money taken in by the city from its source to its ultimate use in providing that which the citizens demand. When this has been …

The Sheriff's Office Of Ellis County, Kansas, Eugene A. Mcfarland May 1936

The Sheriff's Office Of Ellis County, Kansas, Eugene A. Mcfarland

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This study has been made in the field of local government. It deals only with the sheriff's office in Ellis county , Kansas. The statutes of Kansas and their application and function show that this office is primarily the same today as it was in England in the seventeenth century. A study of the sheriff's office relates that the powers and duties are similar in Ellis county to those in England when the sheriff was a servant of the King and his court. Frequent changes have been made but the facts still remain that one of the main defects is …

A Refutation Of Modern Higher Critical Arguments Against The Authenticity Of The Davidic Psalms, W C. Koester May 1936

A Refutation Of Modern Higher Critical Arguments Against The Authenticity Of The Davidic Psalms, W C. Koester

Bachelor of Divinity

Setting out to inspect literary productions, the higher critics seek to ascertain their dates, their authors and their value "as they themselves may yield the evidence." It is our purpose here, however, to deal only with their considerations advanced in opposition to the conservative view, that David is the author of those Psalms ascribed to him in their titles (seventy-three in all), and in favor of the critical view, advocating a late origin in either exilic or post-exilic times. In classifying their arguments we find that there are essentially three modes of attack used against the authenticity of the Davidic …

An Investigation Of Molech And Recent Theories Concerning The Term, Herbert C. Albrecht May 1936

An Investigation Of Molech And Recent Theories Concerning The Term, Herbert C. Albrecht

Bachelor of Divinity

The influence of mechanistic, materialistic science, through Evolutionism, has in recent centuries shaped men's theories regarding the origin and development of the religions of mankind. Since the universe was conceived to be the direct result of vast eras of development by a simple process of cause and effect, it had to follow that religion was also an outgrowth of the same lines of cause and effect. Deistic speculation, indeed, made God the primal cause of this development, insofar as he set the universe in motion, leaving it to evolve in its own way, but Deism thought of religion as being …

The Trend Of Financing Urban Property, Irvine F. Wilson May 1936

The Trend Of Financing Urban Property, Irvine F. Wilson

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This thesis is intended as a survey of trends in financing urban property. Urban property, as construed by this study, includes all incorporated cities, towns, and villages. This interpretation is used firstly in order that a complete analysis might be pictured and secondly, because investments in property are not necessarily restricted because of the number of inhabitants in a particular town or city. The report abounds not only in graphs and curves which indicate movements, but also explanatory material and tabulated statistics when deemed necessary to present a complete authentic picture.

A Comparison Of The Content Of Text Books In Geography In Relation To The Major Objectives To Be Obtained, Milo G. Stock

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The problem of this thesis is to determine how nearly certain selected textbooks of recent date in geography are adapted to attain objectives of geography found listed in published authoritative sources in the field of geography. The thesis is limited in its scope in that it uses only the second book of the series, in the texts thus in a measure getting the same level of material in each case.

Oratio Et Philosophia, Robert James Casper May 1936

Oratio Et Philosophia, Robert James Casper

Bachelors’ Theses

In the modern trend to disparage the acts and truths of revealed religion, discerning Catholic Apologists find that so-called rationalist thinkers fail to focus the spotlight of reason on the religious question which otherwise causes them such great interest.

The reason opponents of religion avoid conflict on these grounds is suggested by the following words of Arnold Lunn in the chronicle of his recent conversion.

Friedrich Wilhelm Koenig: A Study In Biography And Background Based On Documentary Evidence And Family Tradition, Paul King May 1936

Friedrich Wilhelm Koenig: A Study In Biography And Background Based On Documentary Evidence And Family Tradition, Paul King

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

It was my first intention to write a biography of my grandfather. This was to be an entirely creative piece of work, based on his Army discharge, an account of his death and burial in the local paper, and the traditions of the family. Because his life after 1875-when he left the 5th Cavalry was so closely connected with the history of Hays, the biography was to stop short, twenty-three years before his death. Hays City from 1875 to 1898, the people, the colorful English colonists east in Victoria, the Russian-Germans, the change of troops at the fort, the fort …

A Study Of The Effect Of Oxygen On The Rate Of Dissolution Of Gold In Cyanide Solutions., John A. Cook May 1936

A Study Of The Effect Of Oxygen On The Rate Of Dissolution Of Gold In Cyanide Solutions., John A. Cook

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The accepted chemical reactions in the dissolution of gold by cyanide solutions require the presence of gold, cyanide, water, and oxygen. The importance of dissolved oxygen in cyanide solutions as a factor is recognized by those familiar with cyanidation. Manufacturers of cyanidation equipment realize the necessity of oxygen, as shown by the appliances they have developed which are attached to the agitators in order to saturate the cyanide solutions with air.

The Control Of The Grain Size Of Zinc, Oswald J. Wick May 1936

The Control Of The Grain Size Of Zinc, Oswald J. Wick

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The use of zinc as a structural metal has been militated against by two of its properties, namely, its low tensile strength and its susceptibility to grain growth. The importance of these factors can be appreciated when it is realized that the tensile strength of coarsely crystalline cast zinc is 4,000 pounds per square inch, while finely crystalline cast zinc has a tensile strength of 12,000 pounds per square inch.

The Resumption Of Protestantism Under Queen Elizabeth, A O. Gebauer May 1936

The Resumption Of Protestantism Under Queen Elizabeth, A O. Gebauer

Bachelor of Divinity

The subject which we are about to discuss is of vital interest to the student of English Church History. If it is important for him to know the early phases and developments of that history reaching down into the Roman period of English History; if it is necessary for him to observe the tendencies, persuasions, and movements during the subsequent centuries; then it is truly essential for him to be acquainted with the lace-work of causes, events, and personalities out of which grew the pattern known to us as the Anglican Church.

The Literature Of Spanish South America : Its Background, Development And Characteristics, Catherine E. Lewis May 1936

The Literature Of Spanish South America : Its Background, Development And Characteristics, Catherine E. Lewis

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The scope of this work is to be confined to those nations on the continent of South America which use as their national tongue the Spanish language. This excludes consideration of Brazil, whose language is Portuguese and which possesses a rich literature of its own. Another country is omitted, Paraguay, not from oversight, but because this inland republic is so backward in culture and development that it possesses nothing which can be dignified with the term national literature. Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela - these are the countries of Spanish America with which this discussion will …

The Flora Of The Tasco Lake Region, Sheridan County, Kansas, Raymond W. Darland May 1936

The Flora Of The Tasco Lake Region, Sheridan County, Kansas, Raymond W. Darland

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

It has been customary in writing theses dealing with taxonomic problems to collect data from an entire county. Having had occasion to collect botanical specimens from the Tasco Lake for work in biology at the Sheridan High School, the wealth of plant life to be found here became apparent. The area ranges from xerophytic forms on the uplands to the hydrophytic forms in the lake and marshes. Many of the latter have never been reported from Western Kansas. Collections in preserving fluid were made of the water forms found and specimens of the landforms were mounted on regulation-sized sheets properly …

The Structure Of Organic Thiocyanates Ii : The Dielectric Constants And Dipole Moments Of Organic Thiocyanates, David Franklin Dickinson May 1936

The Structure Of Organic Thiocyanates Ii : The Dielectric Constants And Dipole Moments Of Organic Thiocyanates, David Franklin Dickinson

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

It seems possible that organic thiocyanates, RSCN, might undergo partial rearrangement into the isocyanide form, RSNC, and actually exist as an equilibrium mixture of the two forms. The isocyanide form has never been detected chemically, perhaps because its velocity of rearrangement is too rapid, but most logically explained on the basis of the isocyanide structure. Measurements of the dielectric constant and dipole moments of organic thiocyanates might indicate the rearrangement, especially since an electron migration is involved in the rearrangement.

Dielectric constants of ethyl and butyl thiocyanate solution at various concentrations in benzene were determined by means of a modified …

The Effect Of Excess Carbohydrate, Caffeine And Albumin Feeding Upon The Pancreas And Kidney Respectively, Ernest A. Bailey May 1936

The Effect Of Excess Carbohydrate, Caffeine And Albumin Feeding Upon The Pancreas And Kidney Respectively, Ernest A. Bailey

All Theses

To what extent high and continuous feeding of carbohydrate and high continuous feeding of nitrogenous foods affect the islands of Langerhan, of the pancreas and the renal tubules of the kidney, respectively, is as far as the writer has been able to determine, still an open question. While a vast amount of work has been done along certain physiological lines in connection with carbohydrate and protein metabolism, as well as certain diseases herein involved, very little work has been done to determine what structural influences carbohydrates have on the insulin producing cells (the islands of hangerhan) and similarly what influences …
