The Distribution Of Plant Types In The Escalante Desert Of Utah With Relation To Soil Conditions, Carlyle B. Lambert May 1940

The Distribution Of Plant Types In The Escalante Desert Of Utah With Relation To Soil Conditions, Carlyle B. Lambert

Theses and Dissertations

This problem was a study of plant species in the Escalante Desert, Utah, in relation to soil conditions. The plants were surveyed by the transect-plot method. The plants and soils were analyzed by percentage-frequency techniques. There is no measurable correlation between soil series and the dominant plants which occur on the soils. There is no correlation between soil types and the plants that are dominant on the soil types. There is a definite correlation between textural classes of the soil and the plants that are dominant on these classes.

Density Properties Of Sets, Harry Taylor Fleddermann May 1940

Density Properties Of Sets, Harry Taylor Fleddermann

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dr. H. L. Smith in a paper which has not been published as yet 3hows that by starting with a general function satisfying Caratheoacry's first two postulates on an outer measure function, it is possible to construct a function which satisfies all four postulates. In this dissertation we have stuuied some of the characteristics o of this.function, principally those which are of use in deriving our‘theorems on density. We have set up three general density functions, and nave succeeded in showing- tnat for the most general of these, it is true thac the Smith measure of the set at which …

An Algebraic Treatment Of Diophantine Analysis, Anthony Andrew Aucoin May 1940

An Algebraic Treatment Of Diophantine Analysis, Anthony Andrew Aucoin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Diophantlne analysis, while an old subject, is a collection of special problems. The methods used are very varied and those used to solve one problem will not usually solve a second one. It is possible that this condition exists because Diophantlne analysis is usually considered as number theory. While some problems are problems in number theory, a large body of material may be developed by algebraic methods. In this thesis the methods of algebra are exploited. The material of this thesis divides itself into chapters naturally, according to the degree of the equations. Considered in order are quadratics, cubics, quartics, …

The Investigation Of Different Variables In The Assaying Of Silver Cyanide Solution, Warren M. Mahan May 1940

The Investigation Of Different Variables In The Assaying Of Silver Cyanide Solution, Warren M. Mahan

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The assaying of gold and silver cyanide solutions is by no means new. The first method of analysis which is given in the literature is an evaporation method by S. B. Christy in 1896. However, the fire assaying of gold and silver dates further back than this. There is a method of fire assaying for gold and silver given in literature as early as 1556 in Georgius, Agricola’s De Re Metallica book.

A Study Of Metallic Eutectics, Robert P. Corbett May 1940

A Study Of Metallic Eutectics, Robert P. Corbett

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

All of the metals have definite melting points. When a metal is heated above the melting point, it exists as a liquid. Now if the melt is allowed to cool, it will solidify when a temperature corresponding to the melting point is reached.

However, if one metal is added to another metal, both of which are mutually soluble in the liquid state, a certain effect can be noted. The melt will not solidify when the melting point of the pure metal is reached, but will freeze at a lower temperature.

Experiments On Artificial Control Of The Strawberry Root-Infesting Weevils Brachyrhinus Ovatus (Linne) And Brachyrhinus Rugosostriatus (Goeze) In Northern Utah, Ray L. Janes

Biology

Strawberries In Utah have for many years suffered serious injury fron the larvae of root-infesting snout beetles. Injury caused by the two species, commonly called the strawberry root weevil, Brachyrhinus ovetus (Linne) and the rough strawberry root weevil, B. rugosostriatus (Goeze), is very similar, except that individuals of the latter and larger species consume more food and therefore cause more damage to infested plants for a given population. A third species, B. sulcatus (Fabr.), which is larger and more destructive then the others, has recently appeared in a few fields in Cache County. Beesune of the serious injury caused by …

Sexuality And Related Subjects In Ustilaginales (Smuts), William Vance Wright May 1940

Sexuality And Related Subjects In Ustilaginales (Smuts), William Vance Wright

Biology

The Ustilaginales represent a group of fungi which are all parasitic upon the higher flowering plants. The mycelium is hyaline, somewhate septate, mostly intercellular, branched, and practically restricted to the interior of the host. At maturity the mycelium often disappears, partially, at least, through gelatinization. The fertile mycelia becomes compacted into the masses which give rise to numerous chlamydospores. That is, the chamydospores develop directly from the mycelia. Upon germination, each chlamydospore sends out a short tube called a promycelium. From the promycelium are budded off sporidia, generally four. If the sporidia find logment on suitable host tissue, they germinate …

The National Election Of 1912 In Nebraska, C L. Hartman May 1940

The National Election Of 1912 In Nebraska, C L. Hartman

Student Work

Before 1912, the Nebraska delegates to the national party conventions were chosen by state conventions, dominated the local bosses. The presidential preference primary law now effective for the first time, provided for popular choice of delegates, and left the politicians guessing as to the character of those delegations. There were inclications in October, 1911, that the Nebraska republicans favored William Howard Taft and Robert H. La Follette. The democratic situation was far more complex. The followers of William Jennings Bryan were divided about eqaully between Woodrow Wilson and Champ Clark, while Bryan was friendly to both. Democratic organization leaders, particularly …

Areal Geology Of The Post-Paleozoic Surface Of The Northwest Plains, William M. Broderick May 1940

Areal Geology Of The Post-Paleozoic Surface Of The Northwest Plains, William M. Broderick

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Probably most of the area included in this report has been examined to some extent by oil geologists, and most, if not all, of the important domes have been discovered and surveyed thoroughly. In parts of the area, the bedrock is covered by glacial drift or alluvium material, but it is reasonable to believe that no new domal structure will be found. This means that surface examination alone will be insufficient in locating new oil fields, so future prospecting will be dependent, to a great extent, on studies of sub-surface stratigraphy.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

James Guthrie, like any man, may be considered as a private individual, as a participant in the economic activities of his time, and as a citizen. Of Guthrie’s personal life little is known besides the barest biographical outline. His business career was fairly successful in reaping monetary rewards from his "lucrative law practice," his real estate transactions, and his participation in various corporate activities. This thesis is primarily concerned with Guthrie’s public life, with his services to his fellow citizens as city councilor, state legislator, state constitution reviser, Secretary of Treasury, United States Senator, and as a leader of the …
