A Study Of The Personnel, Status, And Educational Activities Of The Negro Ministers Of Dallas, Texas, Clarence Henry Sanders Aug 1948

A Study Of The Personnel, Status, And Educational Activities Of The Negro Ministers Of Dallas, Texas, Clarence Henry Sanders

All Theses

The lack of seminary training is a definite handicap to a minister. In fact, upper and middle class Negroes depreciate the uneducated Negro preacher. Therefore, since they depreciate the common, uneducated Negro preacher, he is loosing his influence in the community. Ministerial candidates should also have an acquaintance with the social sciences and the problems of the family and the home. This is more desired than a head full of technical theology. The writer is of the opinion that the ministers who graduate from seminaries today show too little evidence of a good, thorough knowledge or understanding of human relations. …

The Poet At War., E. R. Hagemann Aug 1948

The Poet At War., E. R. Hagemann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The artist, whether he was novelist, poet, painter or essayist, was caught in the maelstrom of violence and destruction that was World War I. Conscription was employed in most nations participating in the War and the artist, with his accurate, discerning eye and his sensitivity, was destined to report the War as he actually saw it unfold before him. A great part of the creative activity these artists engaged in was an analysis and reportage of the years from 1914, to 1918. Before the Armistice had been signed on November 11, 1918, Henri Barbusse had published his indictment of war, …

A Study Of The Social Adjustment Of Schizophrenic Patients Following Electroshock Therapy., Lillian D. Morgan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to inquire into the social adjustment of patients admitted to the Louisville General Hospital in 1946, diagnosed as schizophrenic, treated there with electroshock therapy and subsequently discharged to their homes or to the Central State Hospital. Schizophrenia, as we know, is considered one of the most serious of personality disturbances and accounts for a high proportion of the admissions to mental hospitals. There are over 20,000 schizophrenics entering mental hospitals in the United States yearly. Prior to the use of convulsive therapy the prognosis for schizophrenic patients was regarded as poor, and no methods …

Milton's Religious Attitude In Samson Agonistes., Milton Gerald Miller Aug 1948

Milton's Religious Attitude In Samson Agonistes., Milton Gerald Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The criticism of Milton's Samson Agonistes has generally centered about interpretation of its autobiographical content and the interpretation of its classical form. The aim of this thesis is to show the relation of the inner, psychological form to the Puritan tradition. The biblical story from which Samson was derived, Judges 13-16, offers little to the scholar in understanding the psychological impetus of Samson. It is mainly a treatment of a pagan narrative demonstrating the snares inherent in trusting a woman with secrets. Samson finally regains his strength and pulls down the temple at Gaza and the narrative ends.

Meeting The Guidance Needs Of Youth In The Booker Washington School., Euela Gary Inghram Aug 1948

Meeting The Guidance Needs Of Youth In The Booker Washington School., Euela Gary Inghram

Student Work

The writer wishes to confess that this has been very difficult problem because certain factors in the overall picture of' the education of the Negro in the South make it almost impossible to rule out passion, not to mention subjectivity. In the responses of the students who filled out questionnaires have been found a number of answers that we should like to ignore. In about half of the instances these students have written, sometimes without invitation, their comments on the back of the mimeographed sheet.

How Young Men Become Established In Farming In Tyler County, Texas, Jim Bob Mark

All Theses

This thesis is concerned with the general problem of how young men become established in farming.

Sitting For The Study: Due to the inability of young people to obtain positions in industrial and business pursuits, there were in 1936, "more than two million young people on farms who would, under pre-depression conditions, have migrated to the cities". This situation probably forced many persons to remain on farms, to produce feed, to work part-time away from farms for pay, or to take up farming as a full-time occupation. Many thousands of people are born on farms, are trained in that occupation …

The Development Of The Negro Chamber Of Commerce Movement In Texas, Reby Cary Aug 1948

The Development Of The Negro Chamber Of Commerce Movement In Texas, Reby Cary

All Theses

Purpose

The American Negro is becoming more organization conscious with each succeeding generation. A large number of organizations are founded as a means of protest against certain evils which the Negro believes should be combatted through group activity. Others are formed for social, religious, political, or economic improvement and have become a distinct and component part of our American heritage. However, it is interesting to note how the Negro has patterned certain organizations after those of whites and merely prefixed or suffixed the name of the group or organization with the word "Negro." It is with this imitated phase of …

An Error Analysis Of The Result Of An Achievement Test In English Given At Dunbar High School, Ferris, Texas, 1947-1948, Lucy Mae Mcdonald

All Theses

Today the American high schools are being called upon, as never before, for a greater efficiency and for a superior product. The growing enrollments, the rising cost of education, and the mounting criticisms that always occur following a war are causing the public schools to take stock of themselves. These schools are expected to be the source of that type of citizenry which is capable of coping with the problems of our rapidly changing society. Therefore our schools must know where they are going, must possess the means of getting there, and also must possess the instruments that can determine …

A Status Study Of Pupil Participation In School Control In Fourteen Accredited Negro High Schools Of Texas By The Southern Association Of Secondary Schools And Colleges, Luther Fredrick Tubbs

All Theses

Statement of Problem

There seems to be wide differences of opinion concerning the significance of social changes that are taking place in the public schools of Texas. Many adult citizens are not confident that the values of civilization which they now enjoy can be controlled and kept in existence. It is evident that when school people observe what is happening in the outside world and become cognizant of the obvious fear and confusion among grownups, they must realize that they must do all they can to prepare children to cope with the problems more effectively and with more enlightened leadership …

A Follow-Up Study Of Two Groups Of Home Economics Students Who Withdrew From Prairie View College Before Graduation: 1933 And 1943, Ruby Browne Harden

All Theses

It is generally agreed that the large numbers of students, who leave college without continuing until graduation, constitute one of the major problems confronting colleges today. Mary opinions have been expressed concerning the withdrawal of students. McNeeley says:

It has been claimed that from a financial point of view a high mortality in the freshman year is advantageous both to the student and the institution. The student by leaving in this year is saved the expense of continuing in college for a year or so longer when he will be eliminated whereas the institution is saved the cost of furnishing …

Emphasis will be placed upon both the quality of supervision and the quality of instruction necessary to meet the demands of our democratic school system.

This study becomes significant particularly because of three general changes that have occurred within the Luling Rosenwald school system within the last few years. The first of these changes is the increased enrollment. …

A Study Of The Development Of Education For Negroes In Walker County, John Roosevelt Powell Aug 1948

A Study Of The Development Of Education For Negroes In Walker County, John Roosevelt Powell

All Theses

The problem for study may be expressed in the form of one broad question followed by other questions touching on specific phases of the problem. The problem is rather broad in scope as it pertains to time because it extends over a period before the Civil War and the emancipation of the Negro through several periods, which are easily identified, following the war between the states. The problem to be dealt with is;

How has education for Negroes in Walker County developed? The solving of this problem is dependent upon answers to the following questions:

1. Were Negroes taught before …

An Experiment Conducted In Spelling Among The Prairie View Freshmen, 1947-48, Mae E. Shaw Henderson

All Theses

This experiment was conducted to determine the spelling ability of 1947-48 Prairie View Freshmen.

This experiment proposed to do two things: first, to make an analysis of spelling ability of 1947-48 Prairie View Freshmen; and secondly, to determine to what extent the spelling ability improved during the 1947-48 semester.

This experiment proposes to be analytical, thereby serving as a valuable source for the teachers interested in improving spelling skills and growth of Prairie View students.

No comparison is being made at this time of college freshmen spelling, because the writer could find no available standards from which to compare. This …
