Beyond Labels And Captions: Contextualizing Grounded Semantics For Explainable Visual Interpretation, Sathyanarayanan Narasimhan Aakur
Beyond Labels And Captions: Contextualizing Grounded Semantics For Explainable Visual Interpretation, Sathyanarayanan Narasimhan Aakur
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
One of the long-standing problems in artificial intelligence is the development of intelligent agents with complete visual understanding. Understanding entails recognition of scene attributes such as actors, objects and actions as well as reasoning about the common semantic structure that combines these attributes into a coherent description. While significant milestones have been achieved in the field of computer vision, majority of the work has been concentrated on supervised visual recognition where complex visual representations are learned and a few discrete categories or labels are assigned to these representations. This implies a closed world where the underlying assumption is that all …
Iron-Virus Interactions: Development And Testing Of The Ferrojan Horse Hypothesis, Chelsea Bonnain
Iron-Virus Interactions: Development And Testing Of The Ferrojan Horse Hypothesis, Chelsea Bonnain
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Iron is an essential micronutrient for phytoplankton metabolism that limits growth in many regions of the surface ocean. More than 99.9% of oceanic dissolved iron is organically complexed to an iron-binding ligand, many of which have yet to be characterized. This thesis puts forth the Ferrojan Horse Hypothesis, which predicts a role for marine phages in oceanic iron cycling. Based on evidence from non-marine model systems, the Ferrojan Horse Hypothesis suggests that some marine phages (short for bacteriophages, or viruses that infect bacteria) can use iron as a “Trojan Horse” to gain access to host siderophore-bound iron receptors for infection. …
Understanding The Implementation Of Integrated Care For People Living With Hiv, Vickie A. Lynn
Understanding The Implementation Of Integrated Care For People Living With Hiv, Vickie A. Lynn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: The integration of physical and behavioral health services is an innovative method of delivering health care services for persons dual or triply diagnosed with HIV, mental health and/or substance use disorders. Reducing the fragmented delivery of health services by integrating services into one setting is essential to providing holistic patient-centered care and address the complex health needs of this population. Although research shows integrated care improves health outcomes, little is known about the implementation of integrated care in real-world settings because the perspectives and experiences of those delivering and receiving integrated health and social services are underrepresented in the …
International Teaching Assistants’ Perceptions Of English And Spanish Language Use At The University Of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, Edward G. Contreras Santiago
International Teaching Assistants’ Perceptions Of English And Spanish Language Use At The University Of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, Edward G. Contreras Santiago
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Globalization and sociopolitical factors impact migration patterns all over the world. In Puerto Rico, these factors created superdiverse environments where languages users have pushed the boundaries of language in order to make sense of their worlds. Even though this language dynamic is natural for locals, it is those who visit from different countries, specifically international graduate students, that have a difficult time adjusting to Puerto Rico’s rich use of English and Spanish. Understanding how international graduate students perceive the language used at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez (UPRM) upon arrival is essential to provide a better experience for future …

Sinkhole Lake Infiltration Of Contaminants Of Emerging Concern From Onsite Water Treatment Systems, Ethan A. Upton
Sinkhole Lake Infiltration Of Contaminants Of Emerging Concern From Onsite Water Treatment Systems, Ethan A. Upton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The advancement in synthetic chemicals commonly referred to as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and their application has led to an increase in environmental pollution. The use of septic tanks otherwise referred to as onsite water treatment systems (OWTS), promotes the introduction of CECs into the environment while allowing little in the way of remediation. In order to study the impacts of CECs from OWTS as they infiltrate the environment and the aquifer system, water, sediment, and vegetation samples were collected around a sinkhole lake surrounded by residential housing using OWTSs. The main question of this research project is what …
The Distribution And Biogeochemistry Of Subtropical Intertidal Microbial Mats, Bert D. Anderson
The Distribution And Biogeochemistry Of Subtropical Intertidal Microbial Mats, Bert D. Anderson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Microbial mats have played an important role in the carbon (C) and nutrient cycles since the Archean Eon and modern mats are important contributors to the biogeochemistry of intertidal wetlands. Microbial mats are flat assemblages of microbes that are currently found in many unvegetated habitats globally. Intertidal salt pans are a common habitat for microbial mats, however little is known about the distribution of microbial mats within the intertidal landscape. Understanding the spatial distribution of microbial mats is critical to developing quantitative estimates of the impacts of microbial mats on their ecosystems. We photographically measured the presence and density of …
Habitat Suitability Index Model Of The Florida Sandhill Crane (Grus Canadensis Pratensis) In West-Central Florida, Courtney E. Buck
Habitat Suitability Index Model Of The Florida Sandhill Crane (Grus Canadensis Pratensis) In West-Central Florida, Courtney E. Buck
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Florida Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis pratensis) is a state threatened endemic subspecies of the Sandhill Crane (Nesbitt & Tacha, 1997). With a population that was estimated at a maximum of 5,000 individuals in 2003 (Nesbitt & Hatchitt, 2008), it is imperative to identify potentially viable habitats, as Florida is rapidly developing. This research develops a Habitat Suitability Index model to determine unsuitable to optimally suitable habitat locations throughout west-central Florida. To do so, six suitability variables based on the crane’s life history were evaluated: Potential nesting area, immediate nesting area, wetland coverage, foraging area, brooding area, and road proximity. …
An Investigation Of The Effects Of The Parasitic Nematode Aplectana Hamatospicula On The Performance And Behavior Of Cuban Treefrogs (Osteopilus Septentrionalis), Kerri Surbaugh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Parasitic infections are ubiquitous in nature, and host-parasite dynamics can have powerful effects on wildlife populations. Many species have evolved behavioral responses to infection that can help mitigate damage from parasites. Anorexia is a common response to infection observed throughout the animal kingdom. Reducing nutrient intake can help shift host resources from digestion to immunity, as well as limit resources available to parasites. Reduced feeding can weaken the host, but in some host-parasite interactions, this cost is less than that of maintaining an infection. Here, I describe an experiment aimed to explore the effects of the parasitic nematode Aplectana hamatospicula …
Synthesis, Discovery And Delivery Of Therapeutic Natural Products And Analogs, Zachary P. Shultz
Synthesis, Discovery And Delivery Of Therapeutic Natural Products And Analogs, Zachary P. Shultz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Small molecule drug discovery relies heavily on synthetic organic chemistry to develop novel chemical entities that elicit desirable therapeutic effects. The development of targeted chemical syntheses is of paramount importance to access molecules for biological evaluation and is usually considered the bottleneck in most drug discovery campaigns. Targets for chemical syntheses commonly draw inspiration from molecules of natural origin. Nature harbors a wealth of chemical diversity that has established itself over millions of years through chemical and biological evolution. Organisms have an inherent ability to protect themselves from predators and harmful environments. In doing so, many of them evolve to …

Evolutionary Dynamics Of Influenza Type B In The Presence Of Vaccination: An Ecological Study, Lindsey J. Fiedler
Evolutionary Dynamics Of Influenza Type B In The Presence Of Vaccination: An Ecological Study, Lindsey J. Fiedler
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the evolutionary dynamics of influenza type B in human hosts is a public health concern as we strive to minimize the disease burden in seasonal epidemics. Vaccination is considered the best defense against contracting influenza, and everyone over the age of 6 months is advised to get vaccinated before each season. The effect that vaccine-acquired immunity has on the evolution of influenza B remains unclear. In the U.S., vaccine-uptake is irregular across the states, and the differing coverages present an opportunity to study how vaccination influences viral evolution. This thesis analyzes the evolutionary patterns of influenza B in the …

Exploring Young Women’S Choice To Initiate Use Of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception: A Mixed Methods Approach, Helen Mahony
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: The United States has the highest rate of unintended pregnancy compared to any other developed country. Unintended pregnancy is associated with negative health outcomes for both parents and children. It is estimated that government expenditures for unintended pregnancy total $21 billion each year. Women ages 18-25 years old have the highest rate of unintended pregnancy. This age group is categorized as emerging adulthood, and this is a unique developmental period in a person’s life. Given the high rate of unintended pregnancies and the associated negative outcomes, increasing the use of more reliable methods of birth control is a public …
Functional Characterization Of The Ovarian Tumor Domain Deubiquitinating Enzyme 6b, Jasmin M. D'Andrea
Functional Characterization Of The Ovarian Tumor Domain Deubiquitinating Enzyme 6b, Jasmin M. D'Andrea
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The posttranslational modification ubiquitination is major regulatory mechanism used throughout cell signaling pathways such as cell cycle regulation and the DNA damage response. As such, the E3 ligases and their deubiquitinating enzyme counterparts, which conjugate and deconjugate ubiquitin to and from protein substrates respectively, must be tightly regulated to prevent aberrant cellular behaviors that could lead to diseases such as cancer.
Of the five families of deubiquitinating enzymes, the Ovarian Tumor Domain (OTU) family is fairly unique and under-studied; many of its family members hold a linkage specificity to certain ubiquitin chains and a number of them have been implicated …
"It's Not Addiction Until You Graduate": Natural Recovery In The College Context, Breanne I. Casper
"It's Not Addiction Until You Graduate": Natural Recovery In The College Context, Breanne I. Casper
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Natural recovery is inhibition or moderation of problematic substance use without employing the use of formal addiction services. A neuroanthropological approach to natural recovery highlights the importance of both social and biological aspects of achieving this "self" led process of change. Throughout this project I take a critical anthropological approach to natural recovery, which explores a more holistic conception and historically situated view of current natural recovery theory. This research project employs a neuroanthropological perspective to assess how college students perform natural recovery. Using ethnographic methods, which highlight the social and physical experience of moderation, I discuss how students negotiate …
Effect Of Hyperoxia On Type-1 Diabetic Mouse Model, Samuel Ignatious Bolleddu
Effect Of Hyperoxia On Type-1 Diabetic Mouse Model, Samuel Ignatious Bolleddu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Administration of Hyperoxia (>90 % oxygen) is a pervasive intervention to supplement respiratory needs in patients admitted in ICU/critical care units. Current literature suggests that prolonged use of Hyperoxia therapy is directly associated with in-hospital mortality. The exact reason for this high mortality under Hyperoxia is unknown. Recent explorations in Dr. Panguluri lab identified that dysregulation of Kv channels plays a vital role in the pathophysiology of Hyperoxia-induced pulmonary and cardiac complications using animal models. The proposed research will focus on the part of Hyperoxia in generating cardiotoxicity and ventricular remodeling in the type-1 diabetes patients using the Akita, …
Density-Mediated Interactions Are Stronger But More Variable Than Trait-Mediated Interactions In Predator–Prey Systems, Travis M. Flock
Density-Mediated Interactions Are Stronger But More Variable Than Trait-Mediated Interactions In Predator–Prey Systems, Travis M. Flock
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Theoretical and empirical considerations of predator-prey dynamics have sought to determine the dominant of two effects exerted by predators onto prey: consumptive effects of predators and non-consumptive, or trait-mediated, effects. Many studies have identified trait-mediated interactions (TMIs) in diverse taxa, and meta-analyses of these studies found that prey population dynamics are as strongly – if not more strongly – affected by TMIs as density-mediated interactions (DMIs). Since then, there is now an expanded primary literature, and given this potential for new insight on the direct and indirect effect of predators on prey, the cost of traits involved in TMIs relative …
Characterization Of The Autophagic-Iron Axis In The Pathophysiology Of Endometriosis And Epithelial Ovarian Cancers, Stephanie Rockfield
Characterization Of The Autophagic-Iron Axis In The Pathophysiology Of Endometriosis And Epithelial Ovarian Cancers, Stephanie Rockfield
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For women in the United States, ovarian cancer (OVCA) represents the deadliest gynecological cancer with over 14,000 deaths predicted to occur in 2019 [13]. Although innovative treatment strategies have improved the 5-year outcome for these patients, the overall survival has not changed in over 40 years [14]. This is largely due to the challenges in detecting this heterogenous disease at an early stage, as there are multiple potential precursors that may give rise to different histological subtypes [14]. This dissertation is thus focused on investigating pro-survival pathways involved in the pathogenesis of endometriosis (a proposed precursor) and epithelial ovarian cancers. …
Using Predicted Heat Strain To Evaluate Sustainable Exposures, Samantha L. Thacker
Using Predicted Heat Strain To Evaluate Sustainable Exposures, Samantha L. Thacker
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The most commonly used exposure assessment for heat stress is based on Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), and the limits are based on empirical relationships that demonstrate a sustainable exposure. The ISO 7933 (2017) describes Predicted Heat Strain (PHS), which is a rational model for heat stress assessment that is used to assess time-limited exposures. Investigators have examined PHS validity under a variety of time-limited conditions. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate if PHS can predict sustainable exposures.
The data used for this study were from two previous heat stress studies using a progressive heat stress protocol. The …
Measuring Flowering Phenology And Its Consequences: A Systematic Review, Samantha M. Mangum
Measuring Flowering Phenology And Its Consequences: A Systematic Review, Samantha M. Mangum
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite growing interest in flowering phenology among ecologists, as reflected by an increase in the number of papers, there is little information on how studies typically measure and describe a plant’s flowering phenology. The focus of this study was the literature on flowering phenology and the approaches researchers have taken to quantify flowering phenology. Initially, a comprehensive description of the breath of literature on flowering phenology was produced. From there, I described the current research on flowering phenology: the year that the studies were published, the locations of the studies, and the particular biomes where the studies were performed. The …

I took an arts-based approach using drawings and autobiographical data to initiate and create metissages focused on becoming engaged in science education. The findings were that: (1) Participants helped marginalized students understand the culture of science through pedagogical strategies that connected self and science; (2) Participants recognized and countered systemic forms of oppression for students …
Disentangling The Impact Of Poor Sleep From Depressive Symptoms On Emotion Regulation, Kimberly O'Leary
Disentangling The Impact Of Poor Sleep From Depressive Symptoms On Emotion Regulation, Kimberly O'Leary
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Depressive symptoms and sleep are both strongly associated with deficits in emotional functioning (Durmer & Dinges, 2005; van der Helm & Walker, 2010). Although sleep and depression are tightly intertwined, understanding their independent and conjoint impact on emotional functioning is imperative. Given the limitations of previous designs, the primary goal of this study was to examine the separate impact of poor sleep quality and depressive symptoms on emotion regulation. In order to accomplish this goal, we preselected groups on the basis of their sleep and depression profiles: individuals with mainly sleep problems (N = 30), individuals with mainly depressive symptoms …
Neuro-Correlates Of Word Processing Among Four-And-Five-Year-Old Children From Homes Varying In Socio-Economic Status, Wendy Olsen
Neuro-Correlates Of Word Processing Among Four-And-Five-Year-Old Children From Homes Varying In Socio-Economic Status, Wendy Olsen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A large body of research relates families’ socioeconomic status (SES) to child language development (Hoff & Tian, 2005). Results from these studies indicate preschoolers from low SES backgrounds may have underdeveloped linguistic foundations required for future academic success (Sirin, 2005; Lacouri & Tissington, 2011). These differences have been said to create a 30 million word-gap between the language experiences of low and middle to high SES children by the age of 3 years. Thus, children who come from lower SES backgrounds often lack the vocabulary knowledge used in school and in textbooks (Hart & Risley, 1995). One index of SES …
Localization Of Five Target Proteins In Tachyzoites Of Toxoplasma Gondii, Abigail M. Kaiser
Localization Of Five Target Proteins In Tachyzoites Of Toxoplasma Gondii, Abigail M. Kaiser
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Five target genes were selected in Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites for localization studies. These five genes, detected through proteomics studies, included TgME49_227450, TgME49_223080, TgME49_262390, TgME49_230940, and TgME49_269620. Localization of these five target proteins is a first step to confirm their interaction with TgCrk2 and understand their function and role in TgCrk2 regulation of the tachyzoite cell cycle. Gene models for the targets were analyzed using ToxoDB and ApE analysis tools. Endogenous tagging constructs were created for each target. Transgenic parasites were created. Finally, localization analysis of the target proteins in tachyzoites was completed using immunofluorescent microscopy following. One protein was found …
Contribution Of Retrotransposons To Breast Cancer Malignancy, Isaac D. Raplee
Contribution Of Retrotransposons To Breast Cancer Malignancy, Isaac D. Raplee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The components contributing to cancer progression, especially the transition from early to invasive are unknown. Consequently, the biological reasons are unclear as to why some patients diagnosed with atypia and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) never progress into invasive breast cancer. The “one gene at a time” approach does not sufficiently predict progression. To elucidate the early stage progression to invasive ductal cancer, expression signature of transcripts and transposable elements in micropunched samples of formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue was conducted. A bioinformatics pipeline to analyze poor quality, short reads (>36 nts) from RNA-Seq data was created to compare …
Health Information Barriers, Weight Status, And Health Behaviors Among Cancer Survivors: Exploring The Moderating Effects Of Race And Ethnicity, Jennifer L. Barinas
Health Information Barriers, Weight Status, And Health Behaviors Among Cancer Survivors: Exploring The Moderating Effects Of Race And Ethnicity, Jennifer L. Barinas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is an increasing need for research addressing the health concerns faced in cancer survivorship. Research has indicated that racial and ethnic minority cancer survivors are at increased risk for negative health outcomes, and some findings suggest that health literacy may play a role. Yet, few studies have explored how relations among heath information barriers, weight status, and health behaviors may differ by race and ethnicity in cancer survivors. Objectives: 1) To explore whether health information barriers are associated with weight status, cigarette use, and alcohol use among cancer survivors, 2) To explore the moderating role of race and ethnicity …
Water And Salt At The Lipid-Solvent Interface, James M. Kruczek
Water And Salt At The Lipid-Solvent Interface, James M. Kruczek
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Lipid bilayers are important biological structures. The changes in bilayer properties are induced by the composition of the bilayer as well as the solvent. In this work, we study the effects of different molecular makeups of lipids and ionic solvents with molecular dynamics simulations to determine their effect on the bilayer interface. In particular, we look at how different carbon chain bindings affect water viscosity at the interface and allow for a less permeable bilayer. Additionally, we examine the changes to the bilayer due to the presence of the most biologically relevant salt ions. Lastly, we show how the pharmacological …
Investigating The Proteinaceous Regulome Of The Acinetobacter Baumannii, Leila G. Casella
Investigating The Proteinaceous Regulome Of The Acinetobacter Baumannii, Leila G. Casella
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen that overtime has evolved into one of the most problematic pathogens due to its ability to overcome antibiotic pressures and harshly environments in the host and hospital environments. In this context, its genomic evolution due to its capacity to acquire genes that contribute to its pathogenic and antibiotic resistance nature has been the subject of research in the last decades providing with the identification of several proteins aiding in the process of pathogenicity. Although these findings have contributed to our understanding of A. baumannii pathogenic traits, the regulatory network that control their expression are …
Phase Evolution And Dynamic Behavior In Materials With Noncollinear Spin Textures, Eleanor M. Clements
Phase Evolution And Dynamic Behavior In Materials With Noncollinear Spin Textures, Eleanor M. Clements
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Noncentrosymmetric magnetic materials have gained special attention due to their ability to stabilize topologically nontrivial magnetic states via the competition between symmetric exchange and the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. The spin struc- tures in these materials have become a center of interest for spintronics applications due to their stable, particle-like properties, and high degree of tunability via control of external parameters, such as magnetic and/or electric field and temperature. Understanding how these robust magnetic structures stabilize, evolve, dynamically respond, and adhere to existing models, all in the presence of external stimuli, are topics of fundamental interest. In this dissertation, the …
Enhancing Immunotherapeutic Interventions For Treatment Of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Kamira K. Maharaj
Enhancing Immunotherapeutic Interventions For Treatment Of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Kamira K. Maharaj
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common leukemia in developed countries. It is characterized by the accumulation of CD5+ B lymphocytes in the peripheral blood, bone marrow, and lymphoid tissues of affected patients. Patients experience lymphadenopathy, fatigue, and are severely immunocompromised. Management of disease and symptoms is possible with chemo-immunotherapy for higher risk patients; however, CLL remains incurable unless bone marrow transplant is performed. Identification of novel targets and optimization of current therapeutics is therefore still necessary. The new targeted therapies are at the forefront of development for CLL treatment, but it remains challenging to maximize their efficacies while …
