USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a daily pill that can reduce a person’s chances of acquiring HIV. HIV testing and counseling is a critical point during which non-clinical staff could intervene, discuss and/or refer clients for PrEP. However, not all HIV testing/counseling staff take part in PrEP implementation in the same way. This study investigated: 1) the underlying PrEP implementation subgroups of staff who perform HIV testing and 2) PrEP implementation as a function of key constructs from the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR).
Methods: This study was a mixed methods concurrent triangulation design, in which qualitative and quantitative …

Understanding The Adoption Process Of An Hpv Vaccine School-Entry Requirement In Puerto Rico, Coralia Vázquez-Otero
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the US. Infection with low-risk HPV (i.e., 6 and 11) can cause genital warts, and persistent infection with high-risk HPV types (i.e., HPV 16 and 18) can progress to cancer. Currently, there is an HPV vaccine that is recommended for boys and girls, aged 11 to 12. Healthy People 2020 established a national objective of 80% completion of HPV vaccination among children aged 13 to 15 years old. Although the HPV vaccine is proven to be a safe and effective primary prevention strategy, uptake and completion rates remain …

Novel Insights Into The Multifaceted Roles Of Blm In The Maintenance Of Genome Stability, Vivek M. Shastri
Novel Insights Into The Multifaceted Roles Of Blm In The Maintenance Of Genome Stability, Vivek M. Shastri
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Genomic instability is a hallmark of disorders in which DNA replication and repair genes are dysfunctional. The tumor suppressor RECQ helicase gene BLM encodes the 3’-5’ DNA Bloom syndrome helicase BLM, which plays important roles during DNA replication, recombination and repair to maintain genome stability. Mutations within BLM cause Bloom syndrome, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by growth defects, immunodeficiency, >10-fold higher sister chromatid exchange compared to normal cells, and an increased predisposition to a wide range of cancers from an early age. Single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs in BLM have been reported to be associated with susceptibility to a …
Documenting Evolution: Comparing And Contrasting Late Mesozoic And Late Cenozoic Molluscan Patterns, Joshua Slattery
Documenting Evolution: Comparing And Contrasting Late Mesozoic And Late Cenozoic Molluscan Patterns, Joshua Slattery
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite major advances, evolutionary theory still has numerous shortcomings in terms of fully understanding the controls on speciation and diversification. A major factor limiting our knowledge is how biology and paleobiology view speciation from separate micro- and macro-evolutionary perspectives, respectively. Biologists typically examine microevolutionary changes within species from various biogeographic, behavioral, morphological, and genetic perspectives, which contrasts to the macroevolutionary approach of most paleobiologists, who have examined the same phenomena at larger scales but with the standpoint of time, have also concentrated on aspects of global or regional diversification (e.g., richness, origination rates, and extinction rates) over the long-term. Noticeably …

A Retrospective Study Of The Opioid Epidemic And Fentanyl Related Overdose Fatality Cases In A Florida West Coast Medical Examiner District Population, Anne Terese Powell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Opioids are scheduled by the propensity for misuse and abuse with a high rate of dependency and risk of fatal overdose. Opioids can be divided into different classes, including, natural, synthetic, and semi-synthetic. Opiates are naturally occurring and come directly from the opium poppy plant; whereas the semi synthetics opioids are chemical modifications of the poppy plant. Synthetic opioids attach to the opioid receptor but contain no part of the poppy plant. The increased variety and frequency in opioid prescriptions contributed to an opioid epidemic in the United States which is still on going.
According to the CDC, the opioid …

Controlled Wetting Using Ultrasonic Vibration, Matthew A. Trapuzzano
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many industrial processes such as printing and cleaning, as well as products like adhesives, coatings, and biological testing devices, rely on the wetting of liquids on a surfaces. Wetting is commonly controlled through material selection, coatings, and/or surface texture, but these means are sensitive to environmental conditions. Wetting is influenced by variables like surface tension, density, the surface chemistry, local energy barriers like surface roughness, and how the droplet is placed on the surface. Wetting of droplets can also be influenced externally in many ways such as introducing surfactants, applying electrical fields, or by dynamically excitation. Low-frequency, high amplitude vibration …
Anton Wilhelm Amo's Philosophy And Reception: From The Origins Through The Encyclopédie, Dwight Kenneth Lewis Jr.
Anton Wilhelm Amo's Philosophy And Reception: From The Origins Through The Encyclopédie, Dwight Kenneth Lewis Jr.
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Diversity and the concept of race are, or should be, central concerns both for the history of philosophy and for our current political reality. Within academic philosophy, these concerns are expressed in the growing demand for minority representation within the canon, which is overwhelmingly white and male, especially in early modern philosophy. Furthermore, until now, historians of philosophy have not spent the time necessary to uncover various designations such as “Negro”, “Moor”, “Ethiopian”, etc., in early modern Europe, and from there to understand how these shaped philosophical reflections on human diversity. In my research, I relate Anton Wilhelm Amo (c. …

Exploring Variations In Diet And Migration From Late Antiquity To The Early Medieval Period In The Veneto, Italy: A Biochemical Analysis, Ashley B. Maxwell
Exploring Variations In Diet And Migration From Late Antiquity To The Early Medieval Period In The Veneto, Italy: A Biochemical Analysis, Ashley B. Maxwell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project tests the hypothesis that the Langobard migration into the Roman/Byzantine Veneto (northeastern Italy) resulted in significant dietary changes from Late Antiquity (4-5th centuries AD) to the Early Medieval period (6-8th centuries AD). At the end of the Great Germanic Migrations in AD 568, Langobards from Pannonia entered and occupied two-thirds of the Italian peninsula. It is unclear how large these migrations were, as historical documents exaggerate mass movements; however, conservative estimates suggest they made up 8% of the areas they occupied. The degree to which the Langobards influenced economic change and subsistence in this area is poorly understood. …

Investigating The Role Of The Chromosome 19 Microrna Cluster In Human Trophoblast Differentiation And Infantile Hemangioma, Ezinne Francess Mong
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Trophoblast differentiation and invasion is essential for normal implantation and establishment of the maternal-fetal interface, which allows for proper nutrient exchange and support of the fetus. For this to occur, cytotrophoblasts must undergo an epithelial to mesenchymal transition and differentiate into migratory and invasive extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs) that invade the maternal decidua and myometrium. Trophoblast differentiation, migration and invasion is highly regulated by a complex network of signaling pathways, adhesion molecules and transcription factors and is important for the remodeling of maternal spiral arteries from low flow, high resistance to high flow, low resistance vessels to allow optimal perfusion of …
Saudi Special Education Preservice Teachers’ Perspective Towards Inclusion, Sarah Binmahfooz
Saudi Special Education Preservice Teachers’ Perspective Towards Inclusion, Sarah Binmahfooz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In Saudi Arabia, students with disabilities have historically received education in special and segregated schools. As times progressed, regulations and laws changed the manner in which students with disabilities were served. Regulations order that students with disabilities be educated in the least restrictive environment; however, preservice teachers’ perspectives continue to differ in regard to working with students with disabilities in a general education setting. Research has shown that teachers who portray positive attitudes towards inclusion are more likely to work with students with disabilities in an inclusive classroom (Dev & Hayes, 2015). Today, inclusion has occurred in schools around the …
