A Survey Of High School Wrestling Weight Control Programs Used Throughout The United States During The 1968-69 Wrestling Season, Dennis J. Friestad Aug 1969

A Survey Of High School Wrestling Weight Control Programs Used Throughout The United States During The 1968-69 Wrestling Season, Dennis J. Friestad

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to determine the high school wrestling weight control programs used throughout the United States. It was felt that this information would be useful for coaches or for high school activities associations that are responsible for determining a state’s weight control program.

The questionnaire technique was used to gather the data. Each of the fifty state high school activities associations was contacted and forty-five of them responded to the questionnaire. Forty of these state associations supported or controlled wrestling and gave information about their wrestling programs.

Results showed that thirty-five of the forty states had some type …

Phylogenetic Relationships Of Purshia Tridentata And Cowania Mexicana, Stewart C. Sanderson Aug 1969

Phylogenetic Relationships Of Purshia Tridentata And Cowania Mexicana, Stewart C. Sanderson

Theses and Dissertations

Because of the greatly increased supply of genetic variation which it provides, introgression is of great importance in determining both the rate and the direction of evolution. Hybridization between the genera Cowania and Purshia provides an excellent model for demonstrating the various products which might be expected from introgression. The present study is an attempt to further investigate phylogenetic relationships of Cowania mexicana and Purshia tridentata by use of cytological and biochemical techniques.

The Catalytic Hydrogenation Of Benzodiazines.|Ni.|Pphthlazine.|Nii.|Pquinazoline, Danny Lee Elder

Theses and Dissertations

Quinazoline and phthalazine were hydrogenated at low pressure and temperature (60 psi, room temperature) and high pressure and temperature (2000 psi, 100°C, 150°C} in neutral and acidic solvents over 5% Pd/C, 5% Ru/C, 5% Rh/Al2O3 , 5% Rh/C, and 5% Pt/C. Chromatographic methods for determining the qualitative and quantitative composition of hydrogenation mixtures were developed. The compositions of quinazoline and phthalazine-hydrogenation mixtures were determined. Eight phthalazine-hydrogenation products were detected and isolated: (1) 1,2-dihydrophthalazine, (2) 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrophthalazine, (3) a,a'-diamino-o-xylene, (4) o-methylbenzylamine, (5) 1,3-dihydroisoindole, (6) o-xylene, (7 and 8) cis- and trans- 1,2-dimethylcyclohexane. These products were identified by isolating them from reaction mixtures …

Water Injection In An Automobile Gas Turbine Combustion System, Billy Ray Jackson Aug 1969

Water Injection In An Automobile Gas Turbine Combustion System, Billy Ray Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

"GENTLEMEN, JUNK YOUR ENGINES!" This title of a recent periodical article [1]* catches some of the expectation for the wedding of the Automobile and the Gas Turbine, The nuptials cannot be completed though, unless two problems are overcome: 1) high fuel consumption, and 2) high operating temperature. The first problem is solvable by the use of heat regeneration and much work has been done in this area [2][3] [4]. The solution of the second problem of high operating temperature was the basis for this thesis. The method of solution was by water injection into the combustion gases prior to entrance …

A Thermodynamic Approach To The Study Of Phase Equilibria In The Sodium-Potassium Alloy System I. The Phase Diagram For Nak At Atmospheric Pressure ; Ii. High Pressure Phase Studies, Donald Ray Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Ultra-pure reagents, platinum resistance thermometry and modern inert atmosphere glove box facilities have made possible a detailed examination of the NaK system at atmospheric pressure. A thermoanalytical study of solid-liquid phase equilibria in the NaK alloy system was conducted in the tetrahedral press to 55 kbars to investigate possible intermediate compound formation and shifting of the invariant points at various pressures. An expected shift in the eutectic composition to lower potassium content with an increase in the halt temperature on increasing pressure was confirmed. A merging of the meritectic and eutectic points at 343 ±2°K and 37 ±3 kbars occurred …

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Of The Sodium-Rubidium And Sodium-Potassium-Rubidium Alloy Systems, Chen-Chao Hsu Aug 1969

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Of The Sodium-Rubidium And Sodium-Potassium-Rubidium Alloy Systems, Chen-Chao Hsu

Theses and Dissertations

Thermal methods were used, to determine with high precision, the solid-liquid phase equilibria diagrams for the sodium-rubidium and sodium-potassium-rubidium systems. In the sodium-rubidium system, the results differ greatly from those of earlier works, especially near the eutectic composition where differences in freezing points as large as 25°K occur. A detailed search was made for possible intermetallic compounds (especially Na2Rb). Neither slow temperature cycling in the temperature range where compound formation could occur nor extended periods of annealing just above the eutectic temperature produced any evidence for compound formation in the sodium-rubidium system. A 2:1 (sodium to rubidium) sample was subjected …

Ii, Proton Dissociation From Adenosine, Several Monosaccharides And Related Compounds. Iii, Proton Dissociation From Several Pyrimidines And Their Nucleosides At 10, 25 And 40°, Joseph Howard Ryttling

Theses and Dissertations

The log K, ΔH° and ΔS° values for the interaction of several metal ions with the two isomers of the cyclic polyether, 2,5,8,15,-18,21 hexaoxatricyclo[20.4.0.0^9,14]hexacosane are reported. The stability order found for alkali metal ion interaction with either isomer is identical to the order of ion permeability through reconstituted biological membranes for structurally related antibiotics. The size of the metal ion is critical in determining the extent of interaction. A calorimetric titration study of proton ionization from several monosaccharides and derivatives, pyrimidine bases and their nucleosides, adenosine and its derivatives, and cycloheptaamylose is described. The heats of reaction obtained in this …

Optimization Of Physical Properties Of Hydraulic Cushion Cells For Vehicle Impact Restraint, William Evans Hughes Aug 1969

Optimization Of Physical Properties Of Hydraulic Cushion Cells For Vehicle Impact Restraint, William Evans Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the United States has witnessed a vast expansion of its internal highway system. Concurrently the number of vehicles has increased as has the average yearly milage per vehicle. Unfortunately, along with increased vehicle use there has been an alarming increase in annual loss of life and property due to traffic accidents. Statistics verify that the modem freeway systems greatly reduce dangerous head on collisions but the rate of accidents due to collisions with fixed objects in or near the roadway has increased almost 50 percent in the past thirty years.^1 In 1966, about 13>300 deaths were …

The Effect Of Chemical Adjuvants Of The Survival Of The Free-Living Stages Of The Gastrointestinal Nematode, Haemonchus Contortus, Anthony T. Chang

Theses and Dissertations

Considerable research has been done on the influence of various chemical adjuvants, such as glycerol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on the survival of protozoan organisms. (Levine and Marquardt, 1955; Levine, Mizell and Houlahan, 1958; Levine, et al. 1962; Levine and Andersen, 1965, 1966; Fitzgerald and Levine 1957 1 1961; Diamond, 1964). Considerably less work has been done on metazoan parasites. The effects of various chemical adjuvants on the survival of Haemonchus contortus, the large stomach worm of sheep, at extremely low temperatures has not been reported. The purpose of this research was to determine if different concentrations of chemical adjuvants …

Mechanism Of Water Transport Through Reverse Osmotic Membranes, Cheryl Kay Murphy Jul 1969

Mechanism Of Water Transport Through Reverse Osmotic Membranes, Cheryl Kay Murphy

Theses and Dissertations

Cellulose acetate membranes show a higher permeability to water than to salt and are being used for desalination of salt water by reverse osmosis. Use of highly acetylated cellulose membranes give a higher salt rejection but also decrease flow rate of the water. The addition of very-short-chain substances or alkyl groups larger than one carbon atom to the cellulose membrane also decreases water flux. A proposed mechanism of transport through the membrane is that the water molecule is passed along the chain by hydrogen bonding with the acetyl groups, The NMR shows a change in the chemical shift of water …

The Identification Of A Germination Factor For Basidiospores Of Psilocybe Mutans, Neal K. Van Alfen Jul 1969

The Identification Of A Germination Factor For Basidiospores Of Psilocybe Mutans, Neal K. Van Alfen

Theses and Dissertations

Basidiospores of the Basidiomycete Psilocybe mutans have been found to germinate only in the presence of water extracts of animal dung. The chemical nature of the factor present in the dung that induces germination is not known, nor has it ever been isolated· Experiments showed that extracts of bile salts cause the basidiospores to germinate, indicating that since bile salts are found in dung, they may be the factor which stimulates the spores to germinate. Investigations of the properties of the factor in dung show that the factor has solubility properties that are similar to those of the bile acids. …

Inhibition Of Asexual Reproduction In Planaria, Lewis Hafen Leavitt Jul 1969

Inhibition Of Asexual Reproduction In Planaria, Lewis Hafen Leavitt

Theses and Dissertations

Asexual reproduction in the decapitated planaria, Dugesia dorotocephala, is inhibited by an extract of homogenized heads of the same or closely-related species. Decapitated planaria allowed to regenerate have reproduced asexually over 80% of the time, while those that have been cultured in a suspension of head homogenate have had asexual reproduction inhibited to less than 10%. The substance that inhibits asexual reproduction is heat labile. It requires a concentration of 2.0 heads/ml that contains .13 mg protein/ml to effectively inhibit asexual reproduction. A similar concentration of head homogenate from the related planaria, Dugesia tigrina, also contains the inhibitory substance. Head …

Syntheses Via Modifications Of The Knorr-Paal Procedure :|Ba. Derivatives Of 2,6-Dioxa-10-Azatricyclo[5.2.1.0[Superscript 4,10]]Decane ; B. Highly Sterically Crowded 1,2,5-Trialkylpyrroles And Pyrrolidines, Weldron Severin Burnham

Theses and Dissertations

Earlier work in these laboratories on the heterotricyclic system 2,6-dioxa-10-azatricyclo[5.2.1.04,10]-decane, formed from 1,4-diketones and 2-amino-1,3-propanediols by a product-water-azeotroping procedure, was extended with the synthesis of analogous compounds, e.g., the 1,4,7-triethyl-, 1,7-dimethyl-4-isopropyl-1,7-diethyl-4-isopropyl-, 1,7-dimethyl-3- and 4-phenyl- compounds. The 1,7-dimethyl heterotricycle, the kinetically-controlled product, was accompanied by the thermodynamically-controlled product, 2-(2,5-dimethyl-1-pyrryl)-1,3-propanediol. The 1,7-diethyl heterotricycle was also accompanied by the isomeric pyrrole as were the 1,7-dimethyl-3- and 4-phenyl compounds. A scheme postulating a common intermediate is presented. The interesting analogous compounds, 1,7-dimethyl-2-oxa-6-thia-10-azatricyclo[5.2.1.04,10]decane, 1,4,7-trimethyl-2,6-dioxa-11-azatricyclo[5.3.1.04,11]undecane and 11-hydroxymethyl- and 11-methyl-9,13-dioxa-14- azatetracyclo[6.5.1.02,7 011,14]tetradeca-2,4,6-triene were also prepared. The syntheses in good yields of a considerable number of moderately to …

The In Vivo And In Vitro Metabolism Of S-Adenosyl-L-Homocysteine By The Rat, Chris H. Miller Jun 1969

The In Vivo And In Vitro Metabolism Of S-Adenosyl-L-Homocysteine By The Rat, Chris H. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Radioactively labeled S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine was administered intravenously to rats to determine the fate of the homocysteine moiety and to isolate and identify any excretory products that arose from the metabolism of this compound in vivo. After intravenous injection of S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine-3H (homocysteine labeled) into rats, less than 15% of the radioisotope was incorporated into protein methionine or excreted as α-ketobutyrate. The remaining tritium was associated with a previously unidentified keto acid which was excreted in the urine. Intravenous injections of S-adenosyl-3H-L-homocysteine (adenosine labeled) or S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine-35S revealed that both the purine moiety and the sulfur atom remained …

The Effectiveness Of Cognitive Conflict And Active Participation As Methods Of Inducing The Conservation Of Substance, Leila K. Beard Jun 1969

The Effectiveness Of Cognitive Conflict And Active Participation As Methods Of Inducing The Conservation Of Substance, Leila K. Beard

Theses and Dissertations

This study was concerned with the possibility of training for conservation. With the component elements held constant across all groups, the effectiveness of two methods of presentation, cognitive conflict and active participation, were tested by a pretest-training-posttest procedure using a 2 x 2 design with a common control group. Within the treatment groups, a conflict presentation of addition-subtraction and perceptual components was contrasted with a non-conflict presentation of the same addition-subtraction and perceptual components, each in a separate series. An active manipulation procedure was contrasted with passive participation. Results indicated that conservation responses increased within the treatment groups significantly more …

Solubilization Of Lignite Under Hydrogen Pressure In Various Organic Solvents, Eddie Keh-Chen Yuan Jun 1969

Solubilization Of Lignite Under Hydrogen Pressure In Various Organic Solvents, Eddie Keh-Chen Yuan

Theses and Dissertations

The solution-hydrogenation of Baukol-Noonan lignite, from Burke County, North Dakota, was undertaken in a microautoclave with various organic solvents. The reactor was charged with pulverized lignite and solvent (mixture) in a 1:4 ratio by weight. The reaction conditions were 735-750°F, 1500 psig. initial hydrogen pressure and two hours of reaction time at temperature and pressure.

The percent solubilization of lignite was calculated from the weight of residue recovered and initial weight of lignite charged. It was found that a hydroaromatic ring which was polarized by a nitrogen atom or coupled with a benzene ring was an effective solvent for lignite. …

An Investigation Of A Structural Model Of Small Group Problem Solving, David Dwight Harshbarger Jun 1969

An Investigation Of A Structural Model Of Small Group Problem Solving, David Dwight Harshbarger

Theses and Dissertations

Past research on the nature of small group problem solving has led to contradictory findings. Using complex problems, Shaw (1954b) found a decentralized interaction structure, i.e.,a group arrangement in which group members can communicate freely, to be most effective in reaching accurate solutions. Mulder (1960), using Shaw's complex problems, found a centralized decision structure, i.e., a group arrangement in which decisions were made by a small proportion of group members, to be most effective in reaching accurate solutions. Hutte (1965), suggested greater accuracy was found when a decentralized decision structure was used in complex problem solving. In none of these …

Physicians' Degree Of Concern As A Function Of Numerical Medical Information Indices, Frederick W. Theye Jun 1969

Physicians' Degree Of Concern As A Function Of Numerical Medical Information Indices, Frederick W. Theye

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation was essentially exploratory and descriptive in purpose. Utilizing the direct scaling method of magnitude estimation (with assigned modulus) the study attempted to: (1) determine if lawful relationships existed between the clinical judgment of licensed physicians and the results from nine numerical medical information indices, and (2) to quantitatively describe such relationships.

It was believed that direct estimation methodologies have been shown through empirical studies to be superior to the psychophysical models of Fechner and Thurstone. Previous work has also illustrated that the power law of S. S. Stevens' has provided a powerful methodology in studying the topic …

Response And Associative Learning In Warmup, Allen Mayo Raffetto Jun 1969

Response And Associative Learning In Warmup, Allen Mayo Raffetto

Theses and Dissertations

Improvement in learning successive lists has been found in both serial and paired-associate verbal learning tasks. Both intrasession and intersession effects have been observed, although it is well established that intrasession effects are greater in magnitude. Intrasession improvement in learning successive verbal tasks has been called warmup. Earlier investigators (e.g., Heron, 1929; Irion, 1949; Thune, 1950) favored an explanation of warmup similar to that used in motor skills learning. They viewed warmup as postural and attentive changes taking place within a learning session. These changes were seen as nonassociative and temporary. Warmup was regarded as separate from intersession improvement, usually …

The Controlled Oxidation Of Lignite In A Fixed Bed, Leroy Dockter Jun 1969

The Controlled Oxidation Of Lignite In A Fixed Bed, Leroy Dockter

Theses and Dissertations

The use of cooling coils or pipes to control the reaction zone temperatures when oxidizing lignite in a fixed bed was studied. The experimental procedures involved passing heated air through a bed of lignite to initiate spontaneous heating and then removing the heat generated using a water cooled coil. Variables investigated included the lignite moisture content, prior oxidation history, and lignite source.

Spontaneous heating was initiated in lignite from three different mines, and at initial moisture contents from bed moisture down to 10 percent by heating the lignite to 250-260 °F while passing air slowly through the bed. At moisture …

Plants from sites in Utah and Idaho were grown and examined in order to determine whether or not hybridization with subsequent introgression occurs among the species and if so whether there is a difference in the relative amount of gene flow between the parent species H. jubatum and H. brachyantherum in different environments. Hybridizations and morphological analyses were made using standard procedures. Biochemical analyses were made by comparing paper chromatograms of leaf extracts of plant specimens. The results indicate that in Utah populations sampled, hybridization with subsequent …

Social Structure Of Small Mammal Populations At The National Reactor Testing Station, Idaho, R. Lynn Speth Jun 1969

Social Structure Of Small Mammal Populations At The National Reactor Testing Station, Idaho, R. Lynn Speth

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation examined the social structure of four species of small mammals (Perognathus parvus (Peale), Reithrodontomys megalotis (Baird), Peromyscus maniculatus (Wagner), and Dipodomys ordi (Woodhouse) at the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS) in Idaho. An understanding of the social structure provides ecological clues concerning the integration of interactions, reproduction, distributions, densities, and diel activities for not only one animal and species, but for a complex of animals interacting with each other.
