The Role Of Serious Music In The Development Of American Radio, 1920-1938, Robert Huchette Wilkins
The Role Of Serious Music In The Development Of American Radio, 1920-1938, Robert Huchette Wilkins
Theses and Dissertations
Before the advent of broadcasting in 1920, well- performed, serious music was a monopoly of large population centers. Except for tne phonograph, the repertoire cf which was extremely limited and flawed by technical inadequacies, most Americans had little opportunity to hear good music. From its beginnings, radio depended on music for a large part of its programming. Initially the repertoire differed little from that of the phonograph, but wit.2 the establishment of the networks in 1926/192?, the ser:.ous-music repertoire expanded to include full-length works from the baroque through the contemporary periods. Conductors like Bamrosch, Howard Barlow, Stokowski, and Toscanini, among …

North Dakota And The Korean War, 1950-1951: A Study In Public Opinion, Michael R. Sponberg
Theses and Dissertations
Frequently one hears reference to North Dakota the "isolationist state." Indeed, North Dakota's vociferous opposition to World Wars I and II and its Senator Gerald P. Nye's investigations of the munitions industry all warrant the description of North Dakota as an isolationist state. But what of the cold war period when the enemy was Asiatic rather than European? This study of the first year of the Korean War is an attempt to determine what North Dakotans thought about fighting a war in Asia.
The press which had been divided over the involvement of the United States in earlier wars now …

Ultrastructural Investigations Of Tilletia Caries Teliospores, James Vincent Allen
Ultrastructural Investigations Of Tilletia Caries Teliospores, James Vincent Allen
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the ultrastructure of Tilletia caries teliospores. Specimens were prepared for viewing in the electron microscope by freeze-etching and thin-sectioning techniques. Thin-sectioning techniques gave excellent results with the teliospore walls and the lipid bodies within the teliospore but failed to adequately fix the membranes and internal organelle systems. Micrographs of Tilletia caries teliospores prepared using thin-sectioning show three major wall layers and two partition wall layers and abundant lipid bodies. The freeze-etch method of spore preparation proved superior to the thin-sectioning used in this study to reveal the internal organelle systems of the …

An Optimization Technique Applied To The Determination Of Orthotropic Material Properties Using Dynamic Response Test Data, Ronald L. Webster
An Optimization Technique Applied To The Determination Of Orthotropic Material Properties Using Dynamic Response Test Data, Ronald L. Webster
Theses and Dissertations
A knowledge of the behavior of a material under loading similar to expected service loading is required before that material can be used effectively in the design process. Without sufficient mechanical properties data, the design process degenerates to a time consuming and often costly "build, test and modify" type of program. Obviously, this trial and error approach leaves much to be desired.

A Computer Procedure For The Identification Of Beam, Spring, And Damping Parameters Of An N-Mass Model Using Transient Data, Lynn A. Christiansen
Theses and Dissertations
If, however, one could develop a model for a given physical system, that is a model which can be described in terms of lumped masses, springs beams, and dashpots and then identify the parameter simply by processing acceleration data such as that obtained from drop tests or shaker tests, the task of identification is greatly simplified.
Surface Characteristics Of Conidia From Monosporous Cultures Of Penicillium Digitatum And Aspergillus Nidulans Var. Echinulatus, Raymond Kunito Fuji
Surface Characteristics Of Conidia From Monosporous Cultures Of Penicillium Digitatum And Aspergillus Nidulans Var. Echinulatus, Raymond Kunito Fuji
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the possible taxonomic significance of the "rodlet" patterns and spore wall configurations of conidia from monosporous cultures of Penicillium digitatum Saccardo and Aspergillus nidulans Eidam var. echinulatus Fennell & Raper. Freeze-etching the conidiospores from single spore isolates of these fungi revealed that spore wall patterns and configurations vary much too greatly to be of taxonomic importance on the strain and subspecies level. Environmental factors and genetic influences are discussed as possible mechanisms causing the variations of the spore wall configurations. A membrane-like structure that covers the "rodlet" patterns and which hinders spore …
A Study Of Folic Acid Dependent Reactions In Bovine Brain, Dillard Spencer Broderick
A Study Of Folic Acid Dependent Reactions In Bovine Brain, Dillard Spencer Broderick
Theses and Dissertations
The enzymatic interconversion of serine to glycine and N5, N10-methylene tetrahydrofolate to N5 -methyl tetrahydrofolate have been studied in a cell-free system derived from bovine brain. A partial purification of serine transhydroxymethylase and N5, N10 -methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase has been achieved by ammonium sulfate fractionation, protamine sulfate fraction, and by various column chromatography procedures. The two enzymes studied catalyze sequentially the reductive transfer of the hydroxymethyl group of serine to the N5 position of tetrahydrofolate forming N5 -methyl tetrahydrofolate. The products of these reactions were assayed by the incorporation of C14 from a one-carbon precursor i.e., L-beta-(C14)-serine, or N5 -methyl …

Analytical Study Of Heat Conduction And Thermal Stress In Solids With Pressure Dependent Contact Resistance, Dhruvkumar S. Patel
Analytical Study Of Heat Conduction And Thermal Stress In Solids With Pressure Dependent Contact Resistance, Dhruvkumar S. Patel
Theses and Dissertations
In the usual thermal stress analysis of a body, the stresses are found for a predetermined temperature distribution. In problems involving composite materials, thermal contact resistance between materials can significantly affect the temperature distribution. The contact resistance is normally a function of the contact pressure and thermally induced stresses can affect the temperature distribution. Thus in composite bodies the thermal stress problem and the heat transfer problem may be coupled and require a simultaneous solution of both problems.
