A Comparative Survey Of Soil Microfungi From Three Vegetation Types In Cedar Valley, Utah, Brent T. Wahlquist May 1969

A Comparative Survey Of Soil Microfungi From Three Vegetation Types In Cedar Valley, Utah, Brent T. Wahlquist

Theses and Dissertations

Microfungi were isolated from soil samples by the soil plate method. Soil samples were collected at depths of 0-1", 1-4", and 4-8" both between and beneath the canopy of the dominant vegetation in stands of greasewood, sagebrush, and pinyon-juniper. Salinity, pH, and percent organic matter were measured for each soil sample. A total of 148 strains of fungi representing 141 species and 46 genera were isolated and identified from these alkaline soils, Few strains, including some Aspergilli, occurred only in the more saline greasewood soils, while many strains, including several Penicillia, occurred in both sagebrush and piny-on-juniper soils but were …

Rheological Study Of Concentrated Silica Suspensions, Prakash N. Mishra May 1969

Rheological Study Of Concentrated Silica Suspensions, Prakash N. Mishra

Theses and Dissertations

Concentrated suspensions of silica in water were investigated using a rotational viscometer and a Zeta-Meter. The viscometric data was analyzed for shear dependence, solid concentration dependence and pH dependence. The data for electrophoretic mobility was analyzed for pH dependence.

The experimental data was applied to the Bingham plastic model and the power law model and the power law model was found to describe the experimental data more closely than the Bingham plastic model. The parameters for these two models were correlated to solids concentration, pH and electrophoretic mobility.

Effect of particle size on apparent viscosity was also studied but no …

Ecology Of The Pika (Ochotona Princeps Uinta) In The Uinta Mountains, Utah, Richard D. Bates

Theses and Dissertations

In North America, pikas (mammal genus Ochotona) are distributed throughout the western mountain ranges where they are mostly restricted to higher elevation talus slides. There are two species in North America, the Alaskan or Collared Pika (Ochotona collaris Nelson) and the American Pika (Ochotona princeps Richardson). The former is found north of 58 degrees north latitude and has no subspeciation, while the latter occurs south of 58 degrees latitude and consists of 35 subspecies isolated on various mountain ranges (Hall and Kelson 1959). In Utah there are nine subspecies, which are mostly distributed in the Wasatch range that runs northeast …

Theses and Dissertations

Calorimetrically determined ΔH° values are given for the stepwise formation of chelate species between serinate ion and the divalent metal ions of Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd. These values of ΔH° are compared with those reported in the literature and were combined with values of ΔG° (log K) found in the literature to calculate values of ΔS°. These values of ΔG° and ΔS° are listed also. A new method of standardizing dilute ferrous ion solutions is reported. This procedure makes use of the thermometric titration technique to detect the equivalence point for the reaction of K_2Cr_2O_7 with ferrous ion. …

A Study Of Turbulent Heat Transfer From A Flat Plate With Transverse Temperature Variations, John C. W. Kwan May 1969

A Study Of Turbulent Heat Transfer From A Flat Plate With Transverse Temperature Variations, John C. W. Kwan

Theses and Dissertations

Heat transfer in turbulent flow from external surfaces has been investigated extensively in the past. Most of the theoretical and experimental work deals with a two dimensional boundary layer on isothermal or uniform heat flux surfaces with longitudinal temperature variation. However, little attention has ever been paid to the case in which the temperature of the plate varies transversely. This is a three dimensional problem due to the spanwise variation of the thermal boundary layer. The most elementary example of this is the boundary formed by the sudden temperature impulse that acts transversely across a flat plate as shown in …

The procedure involved a review of the historical backgrounds, an objective chronicle of the disaster, and a look at the national and midwest reaction and response. The study is based on accounts written by those who participated in decision …

The Panama Canal Tolls Question In The Upper-Midwestern Press, Grant K. Anderson Feb 1969

The Panama Canal Tolls Question In The Upper-Midwestern Press, Grant K. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

In 1912, the United States Congress passed a measure which granted free use of the Panama Canal to ships engaged in the coastwise shipping of the United States. Although Great Britain protested that the measure was a violation of the Hay-Pauncefote treaty of 1901, President Taft signed the bill into law. Two years later, newly elected President Woodrow Wilson appeared before a joint session of Congress and requested repeal of the disputed clause. Several months later, Congress concurred in this point of view and repealed the exemption clause. The question arises: What was the reaction of the upper midwest to …

George Romney In 1968, From Front-Runner To Drop-Out, An Analysis Of Cause, Richard M. Eyre

Theses and Dissertations

The meteoric political decline of George Romney is unparalleled in political history and in the history of presidential campaigning. In the space of one year, the man evolved from the overwhelming presidential favorite of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike to a presidential drop out, criticized severely and even mocked by press and public alike.

There are many opinions as to why this phenomenon occurred. The press has opinions, the public has opinions, and the people closest to George Romney have opinions.

A step by step analysis of Romney's campaign casts light on these opinions and completely discredits some while validating …
