A Three State Markov Model For Paired Associate Learning, Thomas R. Linscheid Aug 1970

A Three State Markov Model For Paired Associate Learning, Thomas R. Linscheid

Theses and Dissertations

The continuity-noncontinuity issue remains a focus for both the theoretical and experimental inquiry into the fundamental nature of the learning process. Although experimental studies of paired-associate learning have often disclosed continuities, mathematical models incorporating all-or-none processes have generally fit the data quite well. The most basic of these is the one-element model proposed by Bower in 1961. The model assumes only two states, a learned state and an unlearned state. Transitions from the unlearned to the learned state occur with a fixed probability which is constant across trials. Extensions and modifications of the Bower model have consisted basically of the …

Ornamentation Of Italian Vocal Music Of The Eighteenth Century According To Pietro Francesco Tosi And Giovanni Battista Mancini, Beverly Ann Brandon Aug 1970

Ornamentation Of Italian Vocal Music Of The Eighteenth Century According To Pietro Francesco Tosi And Giovanni Battista Mancini, Beverly Ann Brandon

Theses and Dissertations

The acclaim and recognition attributed to the musical performers of the eighteenth century are reflected in the title Bel Canto ascribed to this period. The contemporary musical scene reveals performances attempting to perpetuate the virtuosity of the performers of this period and to recapture their style. Unfortunately, the aura of legend and mystery surrounding the performance of music of this period frequently leads to confusion and frustration of both teacher and performer rather than to understanding. This study addresses itself to that problem.

Tosi and Mancini were active participants in this period and their theory, technique of performance, and pedagogical …

An Optimization Technique Applied To The Determination Of Modal Damping Coefficients, Craig C. Smith Aug 1970

An Optimization Technique Applied To The Determination Of Modal Damping Coefficients, Craig C. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Although analytical techniques are generally available for the simulation of dynamic systems, often these techniques require a great deal of computer time and storage. This difficulty was vividly pointed out by a previous thesis undertaken in this Department by R. L. Webster (1). Mr. Webster undertook the determination of orthotropic material properties using dynamic response test data from plates. A major difficulty which was encountered was the enormous amount of computer time required for the simulation. This thesis is an investigation of a method which when fully developed, may provide the ability to simulate such systems much more efficiently.

A Comparative Study Of The Head And Thoracic Osteology And Myology Of The Skinks, Eumeces Gilberti Van Denburgh And Eumeces Skiltonianus (Baird And Girard), David F. Nash

Theses and Dissertations

Further clarification of the taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships of Eumeces gilberti and Eumeces skiltonianus is achieved by the comparisons of the skull, mandible elements, and the anterior myology of these two species. Figures are provided to compliment the descriptions. The study confirms their close relationship and few differences are observed. E. skiltonianus, however, appears to have more anatomical plasticity which suggests that E. gilberti may have arisen from the former.

Selected Major Issues In The Philosophy, Design, And Operation Of A Simulated Model Office, L. Wayne Beers

Theses and Dissertations

In many cases, past business graduates from secondary schools were unable to secure job-entry office positions due to their lack of business experience. Concern over this problem caused many business educators to seek improved methods of training for practical office work experience.

Today, much attention is being focused on the Simulated Model Office Method for work experience. However, simulated model office programs have been hampered by a lack of organizational principles concerning the philosophy, design, and operation of simulated model offices.

The problem in this study was threefold: (1) to determine the philosophy, design, and operation of model office simulation, …

Preparation Of New Amino-, Thio-, And Sulfonyladamantane Derivatives, Joseph Craig Argyle

Theses and Dissertations

Various synthetic schemes were used to prepare a number of new amino-thio- and sulfonyladamantane compounds. By a nucleophilic substitution on 1-bromoadamantane, 1-(p-nitrophenylthio)adamantane was prepared from p-nitrothiophenol; the amino- and sulfonyl- derivatives of this compound were also prepared. Silver tosylate was used to generate the 1-adamantyl carbonium ion from 1-bromoadamantane in a synthetically useful procedure for preparing 1-adamantylamides from nitriles. Three 1-(1-adamantylcarbinyl)-2,5-dialkylpyrroles were prepared by Knorr-Paal reactions and reduced to the corresponding pyrrolidines. Thio- and aminomethyl 1-adamantyl ketones were prepared from methyl and bromomethyl 1-adamantyl ketones, respectively. Aliphatic and aromatic oxiranes were reacted with 1-aminoadamantane in a bomb at elevated temperatures …

Trusts And Their Tax Saving Advantages, Richard B. Nystrom

Theses and Dissertations

The general purpose of this paper "Trusts and Their Tax Saving Advantages" is to transmit to the reader information regarding the taxation of trusts. It is not the idea to be specific in all chapters of the paper, but the reader, upon completion, should have more than a general knowledge of trust taxation. A comprehensive paper regarding all the specific points covering all types of trusts would be impractical.

This paper covers the definition of terms relative to the trust relationship, the tax advantages available to trusts, the mechanics involved regarding the gross income, deductions, and allowances contained in the …
