The Oxidative Deamination Of Sulfur Amino Acids By A Bacterial L-Amino Acid Oxidase, Susan S. Chen

Theses and Dissertations

The oxidative deamination of sulfur amino acids by a particulate L-amino acid oxidase obtained from an atypical Proteus rettgeri has been investigated. In addition to several sulfur amino acids tested here the enzyme catalyzes the oxidation of L-leucine, L-phenylalanine, L-tryptophan, L-arginine, L-tyrosine, L-histidine, L-ornithine, L-citrulline, L-lysine and L-isoleucine with a pH optimum at 7.5. Specific activity, pH optimum, Km and Vmax values were determined for each sulfur amino acid. The ordered rate of reaction at pH 7.5 for these amino acids were L-homocysteine, L-methionine, S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine, S-adenosyl-L-methionine, L-djenkolic acid, S-ribosyl-L-homocysteine, S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine sulfoxide, L-homocysteine, methionine sulfoxide, L-cysteine and L-cystine.

Neuronal Coding Of Low Frequency Complex Stimuli At The Cochlear Nucleus And Inferior Colliculus Of Cat Brain, James L. Walker Aug 1970

Neuronal Coding Of Low Frequency Complex Stimuli At The Cochlear Nucleus And Inferior Colliculus Of Cat Brain, James L. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Articles have recently appeared by Erickson (1968) and Pfaff (1969) which propose that the study of the activity of a large population of neurons may contribute information about sensory coding which is supplementary to data obtained from single neuron studies. These authors propose that there are not enough neurons in the primary sensory pathways so that every stimulus can be represented by a separate neuron. They maintain that over-all measures of neuronal activity will be more fruitful in the study of sensory coding. The present study used such a measure (multiple unit techniques) to monitor the over-all discharge characteristics of …

A Comparison Of Biological Characteristics Of Goldeye, Hiodon Alosoides (Rafinesque), In Garrison Reservoir, Donald Eugene Miller Aug 1970

A Comparison Of Biological Characteristics Of Goldeye, Hiodon Alosoides (Rafinesque), In Garrison Reservoir, Donald Eugene Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Age and growth and other biological characteristics of goldeye were compared at five widely separated stations on Garrison Reservoir in 1968 and 1969. All samples were collected with experimental gill nets fished near the surface. In 1968, goldeye comprised 88.56 percent of the total catch of 1,381 and in 1969, they made up 94.42 percent of the total catch of 2,230 fish. It was found that growth patterns of goldeye at the various stations were statistically different, which may be attributed to the differences in turbidity, temperature and possibly other limnologic conditions. Although statistical differences were found the actual differences …

The Syrian Massacres And The Cretan Rebellion: Mid-Victorian Humanitarianism And Britain's Eastern Policy, Edward D. English

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to prove the existence and strength of mid-Victorian humanitarian sentiment. The British government's policy and response to the Syrian massacres and the Cretan rebellion serve as vehicles to show the vitality and power of humanitarianism that was a part of the Evangelical revival. This study will further document the attempted reconciliation of this humanitarian sentiment and Britain's policy in the Near East.

In a general characterization of the unique mid-Victorian period of British history, humanitarianism will be isolated. A humanitarian desire to help will oe shown to be a basis for the British government's …

The Removal Of Sodium From Lignite By Ion Exchange, John T. Crystal Aug 1970

The Removal Of Sodium From Lignite By Ion Exchange, John T. Crystal

Theses and Dissertations

The rate and extent of sodium removal from lignite by ion exchange were studied using calcium chloride solutions. The experimental apparatus consisted of a centrifugal stirring device in a limited bath. Four variables, rotation speed, calcium chloride concentration, particle size, and moisture content were considered.

It was determined that rotation speed had no discernable effect on the rate or extent of sodium removal. Particle size and moisture content, however, do have considerable effect on the rate and extent of sodium removed. It was also found that as the calcium chloride concentration was decreased the exchange approached theoretical stoichiometric proportions.

Input Order, Subjective Organization And Free Recall, John Earle Langhorne Jr. Aug 1970

Input Order, Subjective Organization And Free Recall, John Earle Langhorne Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Considerable current research on memory has focused on the organization of subjects' recall. When the organizational characteristics of a stimulus list are not apparent, subjects will uniquely organize their outputs to facilitate recall. Both Tulving and Bousfield have developed statistics to measure this subjective organization in multitrial free recall experiments. These two measures have been shown to intercorrelate very highly. Substantial correlations are reported between these measures and recall.

During a previous study on subjective organization the recall data from each subject on each trial were scored in such a way that the ordinal position in recall of each word …

Experimenter Bias Effect As A Function Of Ambiguity, Gary D. Barko Aug 1970

Experimenter Bias Effect As A Function Of Ambiguity, Gary D. Barko

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research and discussion has suggested that task ambiguity and experimenter-subject familiarity with the task are important factors affecting the generality and strength of the experimenter bias effect. These factors were conceptualized as inter-task ambiguity (inherent in the task) and two types of intra-task ambiguity (experimenter's familiarity with the task and subject's familiarity with the task). It was hypothesized that experimenter bias would: (1) be a significant factor in a more ambiguous task and not a significant factor in a less ambiguous task, (2) more likely be communicated to the subjects who were less familiar with the task, and (3) …
