Differential Patterns Of Interference During Concurrent Task Performance For The Two Cerebral Hemispheres, Carole H. Hayne Dec 1980

Differential Patterns Of Interference During Concurrent Task Performance For The Two Cerebral Hemispheres, Carole H. Hayne

Theses and Dissertations

In this experiment differential hemispheric processing demands in four cognitive tasks, two verbal and two non-verbal, were measured using a simple reaction time probe procedure. The procedure also measured the interference between the reaction time probe and the verbal and nonverbal tasks. The method used was similar to that found in information processing research using a concurrent task procedure to measure processing demands during primary task performance (Posner & Boies 1971). In the concurrent task procedure the subject is requested to perform two tasks at the same time: a cognitive (primary) task and a reaction time probe (secondary task). The …

Achievement Orientation: Projective And Objective Measures Of The Veroff Model And Their Relationships To Job Reward Values Orientation, Catherine Fairchild Sikorsky Dec 1980

Achievement Orientation: Projective And Objective Measures Of The Veroff Model And Their Relationships To Job Reward Values Orientation, Catherine Fairchild Sikorsky

Theses and Dissertations

The area of achievement motivation research has been fought with theoretical and methodological controversy. The unitary construct of achievement motivation has been challenged by alternative models suggesting several dimensions of achievement orientation. Assessment methods have also been controversial with some researchers preferring objective measures while others prefer projective measures. A third problem in this research area involves the choice of appropriate behavioral or performance correlates of motivation in order to provide a measure of construct validity.

The purpose of the present study was to further explore one model of achievement orientation, the Veroff (1977) model which posits six distinct orientations …

Differential Hemispheric Specialization And Its Relationship To Repression, Shirley K. Tyler Dec 1980

Differential Hemispheric Specialization And Its Relationship To Repression, Shirley K. Tyler

Theses and Dissertations

In Freud’s early formulations regarding a model of the mind, he suggested that repressed material functioned in a separate realm of the mind which was inaccessible to conscious recall or verbal inquiry. Based on studies of split-brain patients and studies of the differential functioning of the cerebral hemispheres, Galin (1977) has suggested that the right cerebral hemisphere may be the locus of unconscious mental contents.

Research with patient populations and normals has shown that each cerebral hemisphere is specialized for a different cognitive style. Right hemisphere cognition is similar in many respects to primary process thinking: global, nonverbal, imaginal, nonlinear …

A Philosophy Of Mutuality In Martin Buber's Writings--Implications For Mainstreaming, Dorothy M. Rath Dec 1980

A Philosophy Of Mutuality In Martin Buber's Writings--Implications For Mainstreaming, Dorothy M. Rath

Theses and Dissertations

The study suggests a relationship which exists between Martin Buber's philosophy of mutuality and a humanistic educational mainstreaming. Mandated by parent-initiated legislation, mainstreaming is intended to reduce the isolation of the handicapped by including them as nearly as possible within the larger group in the regular class, and by giving them greater access to educational resources. This becomes problematic even for those handicapped children in nearest physical proximity. Among the obstacles are society's frequent exclusionist response to the different reflected in the school's preference for homogeneity, and the ideas of competition which dominate education.

The literature indicates that mainstreaming in …

Eneactment And Impact Of Geographical Isolation Factors In Public School Revenue Legislation In Three Selected States, Gerald R. Bass

Theses and Dissertations

This research was conducted for the purpose of studying geographical isolation as it relates to schools. Geographical isolation is defined in the study as the particular circumstances in which schools are in need of supplemental revenue due to a combination of small size and geographical factors which inhibit reorganization or consolidation. The procedure was to investigate, document, and synthesize the actual enactment, implementation, and impact of geographical isolation factors in selected states which have employed such factors in their school revenue legislation.

Chapter II contains a review of the literature regarding the problems of small and isolated schools and the …

Ranching In Western North Dakota, 1887-1920, Scott R. Neevel Aug 1980

Ranching In Western North Dakota, 1887-1920, Scott R. Neevel

Theses and Dissertations

Several historians have dealt with the topic of ranching in the American West, but generally they have presented a broad overview of what took place over the entire western United States. Those who have dealt with ranching in western North Dakota generally have covered the early 1880s, but they have used the calamitous winter of 1886-1887 as a stopping point.

The period from 1887 on through the first two decades of the twentieth century was an era marked by recovery of the stock industry, the change from open to closed range, and the change from the old open range methods …

A Critical Appraisal Of James Whale's The Old Dark House, Christopher P. Jacobs Aug 1980

A Critical Appraisal Of James Whale's The Old Dark House, Christopher P. Jacobs

Theses and Dissertations

This study uses various critical approaches to analyze James Whale's 1932 film, The Old Dark House, and to some extent, the J. B. Priestley novel, Benighted, upon which it is based. The greatest difference between the two works is in their endings—the character Penderel dies in the novel but survives in the film version. The film also emphasizes the plot more than the characters, cutting much of the novel's character-developing monologues. This sacrifices, as well, much of Priestley's social commentary. The film nevertheless has more depth to its characters than many plot-oriented films of the period.

The Old Dark House …

The Relationships Among Family Structure, Family Environment And Satisfaction With College, John R. Lorenz

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationships among family structure, family environment, and satisfaction with college. Items taken from Minuchin’s descriptions of Enmeshed and Disengaged family behaviors were compiled and placed in questionnaire form along with the Family Environment scale of the Minnesota Counseling Inventory. The Family Environment scale was chosen in this study as a way of assessing concurrent validity for the newly selected scale items, which comprised the Enmeshed and Disengaged scales. These three family scales and a modified form of the Hoppock Job Satisfaction Blank for assessing college student satisfaction were administered to seventy-one female and twenty-five male college …

A Grammatical Sketch Of Berik, Peter N. Westrum Aug 1980

A Grammatical Sketch Of Berik, Peter N. Westrum

Theses and Dissertations

This paper is a grammatical sketch of the Berik language based on language data gathered while living with the Berik people in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The levels of the grammatical hierarchy described are words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. The tagmemic model has been used as the model for analysis

Words, isolatable units which cannot be further divided into "free" forms, are divided into classes which are distinguished from one another according to principles of affixation.

Phrases consist of at least one obligatory tagmeme with one or more marginal tagmemes whose fillers are typically words. Several different phrase types are identified. …

Printed Maps Of Utah To 1900: An Annotated Cartobibliography, Riley Moore Moffat

Theses and Dissertations

Old maps are valuable research tools in many fields. Finding and identifying them, however, is often difficult. This annotated cartobibliography attempts to identify all maps of Utah printed before 1900. Entries give the distinguishing features, peculiarities, inaccuracies, and a general description as well as the map's provenance and citations in other lists and bibliographies.

The maps are listed chronologically and include all maps located in research collections in Utah, and in the catalogs of the Library of Congress and the Bancroft Library. Although the first entry is dated 1777, the first map of Utah made from actual observation, earlier maps …

Symbolism In Debussy's Music, Kathryn June Lucas Aug 1980

Symbolism In Debussy's Music, Kathryn June Lucas

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which Debussy was influenced by the Symbolist poets. In order to accomplish this objective, biographical details have been incorporated with the findings that Debussy entered the literary milieu early in his life and became directly involved with the new developments taking place in literature. The Symbolist aesthetic is explained first in terms of the unifying characteristics tying the movement together and then in terms of the specific techniques used by the poets to realize their ideals. A similar approach is used to analyze Debussy’s aesthetic; there is a discussion …

An Epistemological Study Of Goethe's Novel The Sufferings Of Young Werther: An Examination Of Goethe's Educational Philosophy As Reflected In An Analytical Study Of The Character Werther, Mark A. Beckham

Theses and Dissertations

The research problem is to examine Goethe's educational philosophy as identified through an analytical study of the character Werther in Goethe's novel The Sufferings of Young Werther.

The purpose of this study is to reveal the epistemological premises of the learning construct that are within the context of the novel, and to derive from these premises specific learning principles that can be applied to educational theory. Goethe's concepts of the human will, the self, responsibility, choice, and growth are defined and subsequently utilized as the skeletal frame from which to construct the working principles of his thought process. By focusing …

The Winter Ecology Of The Gadwall In Louisiana, Stuart Lindsay Paulus May 1980

The Winter Ecology Of The Gadwall In Louisiana, Stuart Lindsay Paulus

Theses and Dissertations

Data on the disabled in textbooks revealed that more disabled males than disabled females were visible. More adults including senior citizens were depicted as disabled characters. Sixty-seven percent of the disabilities were physical in origin. Nearly 70 percent of the disabled characters were Caucasian. Characterization and language were generally positive.

Analysis of flock characteristics indicated paired and unpaired gadwall remained partially segregated and that pairs were dominant over unpaired gadwall. Pairs were involved in less agonistic activity and remained at greater distances from other birds than unpaired gadwall. Pairing cnronology and behavior suggested that although pairs arose from temporary associations, …
