The Representation Of Exceptional Persons In Selected Educational Materials, Carol M. Lange May 1980

The Representation Of Exceptional Persons In Selected Educational Materials, Carol M. Lange

Theses and Dissertations

A milestone for special education was reached in November. 1975, when the United States Congress passed Public Law 94:142, The Education for All Handicapped Act. Major implications of this document were that disahled children, ages 3-21, now were given an equal opportunity for a free public education; disabled children, would receive that education in the least restrictive environment; due process would be applicable; and the law would be implemented to ensure an education for the disabled ages 3-18 by 1978, and 3-21 by 1980. A result of this law is that disabled children are entering the public school, and a …

The Effects Of Prenatal And Postnatal Zinc Deficiency On Development Of Long-Term Memory In The Rat, Myra D. Heinrich May 1980

The Effects Of Prenatal And Postnatal Zinc Deficiency On Development Of Long-Term Memory In The Rat, Myra D. Heinrich

Theses and Dissertations

The following studies were designed to determine whether zinc deficiency, either prenatal or postnatal, could influence the time course of development of long-term memory in rats. Three nutritional conditions were imposed on litters of rat pups. One group (zinc deficient-ZD) was subjected to a zinc-deficient diet and deionized water. Members of a second group (pair fed-PF) were allowed to eat as much of the zinc-deficient diet as a certain member of the ZD group consumed on the previous day, along with zinc-supplemented water. This PF group was starved, since zinc deficiency typically causes anorexia. The third group (ad libitum-AL) was …

The Use Of Interlace In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings, Sherry L. Mattison May 1980

The Use Of Interlace In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings, Sherry L. Mattison

Theses and Dissertations

J.R.R. Tolkien employs a form of interlace in his work The Lord of the Rings that has roots in medieval French romances, Anglo-Saxon literature of the seventh and eighth centuries, and as far back as Ovid. The technique evolved in the medieval romances as a means of handling multiple action and multiple themes. The technique reappears after long absence in Tolkien's work, with emendations and improvements by Tolkien to fit his modern audience

Tolkien employs the technique in three major areas: the paralleling of story, character, and setting; the forewarning and foreshadowing; and what I have called the time-flash. This …

The Effects Of A Life Career Planning Course On Self-Esteem, Career Maturity, And Sex-Role Stereotypes, Judith Juhala Weist May 1980

The Effects Of A Life Career Planning Course On Self-Esteem, Career Maturity, And Sex-Role Stereotypes, Judith Juhala Weist

Theses and Dissertations

The major purpose of this study was to determine if participation in a life career planning course would significantly increase participants' self-esteem and career maturity and change participants' sex-role stereotypes, as measured by Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, the Texas Social Behavior Inventory, the Career Maturity Inventory, and the Personal Attributes Questionnaire. Another purpose of the study was to determine if self-esteem, as measured by the RSE, was positively related to a second self-esteem measure, career maturity, and sex-role stereotypes, as measured by scores on the TSBI, the CMI, and the PAQ, respectively. The subjects in this study consisted of undergraduate participants …

Achievement And Selected Demographic Variables In Relation To Participation In The Early Childhood Education Program On The Devils Lake Sioux Reservation, John E. Derby May 1980

Achievement And Selected Demographic Variables In Relation To Participation In The Early Childhood Education Program On The Devils Lake Sioux Reservation, John E. Derby

Theses and Dissertations

The 1969 Kennedy Report revealed that one of the primary reasons for low achievement among Indian children was the negative self-image that they had of themselves. As a primary result of this study, Congress passed the Indian Education Act of 1972, which attempts to address the educational needs and concerns of Indian people, both young and old alike. The Devils Lake Sioux Early Childhood Education program has been in existence since the mid 1960s and provides three- and four-year-old children with a preschool program in the areas of cognitive thinking, social development, and improving psychomotor skills. The purpose of this …

A Study Of The Figure, William G. Lubitz May 1980

A Study Of The Figure, William G. Lubitz

Theses and Dissertations

The problem I chose to work with was to render the figure in copperfoiled and leaded stained glass wall mounted or window hung panels. The solution I desired was primarily not academic. The plan was to unite separate facets of my previous work.

Using photographs and drawings from life as preliminary studies and problem solving devices, I then re-worked them into additional objects, i.e. free standing glass sculpture and intaglio prints. Consequently there are examples of the same subject in different media. It is from comparisons of these that I draw the bulk of my information for personal judgement, criticism …

An Agriculture-Based Finance Model For Indian Community Colleges, James E. Shanley May 1980

An Agriculture-Based Finance Model For Indian Community Colleges, James E. Shanley

Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a finance model for Indian community colleges which proposes that these colleges begin and operate agricultural operations which will generate revenue for the colleges. The paper proposes that the college working with the respective tribe use tribal agricultural resources to produce income which can then be used to meet tribal objectives in higher education. The model was reviewed by a panel with expertise in reservation and tribal community college development.

History of the Problem: This paper traces the status of tribal land and natural resources from early Federal/Indian relationships through the Dawes Allotment Act up to the …

Psychopharmacological Analysis Of Central Muscarinic And Nicotinic Receptors, Leonard T. Meltzer Jan 1980

Psychopharmacological Analysis Of Central Muscarinic And Nicotinic Receptors, Leonard T. Meltzer

Theses and Dissertations

Arecoline and nicotine are two psychoactive cholinergic alkaloids. Arecoline is primarily a muscarinic agonist while nicotine, at low doses, is a nicotinic agonist. The experiments in this dissertation investigated two major areas: (1) the role of different factors in the development of tolerance to the behavioral effects of arecoline and nicotine, and (2) the possible mechanism and site of action of the discriminative stimulus (DS) effects of arecoline and nicotine.

The role of dispositional and physiological factors comfiared to behavioral factors in the development of tolerance to the effects of arecoline and nicotine on operant behavior was assessed in Experiments …

Investigation Of A Factor Released By Neoplastic Cells Which Produces A Chemokinetic Response In Activated Macrophages, Richard Durelle Lane Jan 1980

Investigation Of A Factor Released By Neoplastic Cells Which Produces A Chemokinetic Response In Activated Macrophages, Richard Durelle Lane

Theses and Dissertations

The increase in rate of random migration (chemokinesis) of C. parvum activated macrophages in media conditioned by Lewis Lung (LL) carcinoma cells was attributed to a trypsin sensitive, heat stable, high molecular weight factor released from the membrane of the tumor cells.

A capillary tube assay was developed to expediently monitor the chemokinetic activity of macrophages incubated in whole and fractionated media. The capillary tube assay was found to be capable of detecting both chemokinetic and chemotactic (directional movement) factors present in the test media. Statistical analysis revealed the capillary tube assay provided reproducible data both within and between experiments. …

The Effect Of Three Different Types Of Feedback On The Amount Of Force Generated During Isometric Contraction Of The Triceps Brachii Muscle, Cindy I. Buchanan Jan 1980

The Effect Of Three Different Types Of Feedback On The Amount Of Force Generated During Isometric Contraction Of The Triceps Brachii Muscle, Cindy I. Buchanan

Theses and Dissertations

This study was undertaken in order to investigate the effect of different feedback variables on isometric strength performance. The variables studied were auditory EMG biofeedback, knowledge of results, and verbal cues.

Nineteen normal adult women volunteered as subjects for the study. Each subject performed nine isometric contractions of the triceps brachii muscle against the resistance of a cable tensiometer. One of three different types of feedback was given during each contraction in order to motivate subjects to generate as much force as possible. Feedback variables were applied in random order; each variable was used three times. Peak force readings were …

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Duration Of Low Back Pain, Betty Sue Holliday Ashby Jan 1980

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Duration Of Low Back Pain, Betty Sue Holliday Ashby

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between self-esteem and duration of low back pain. Low back pain is one of the most common types of chronic pain. Sternbach et al. (1973) have estimated that the chief complaint of at least seventy percent of the patients presenting at the Pain Clinic associated with the School of Medicine of the University of California, San Diego is back pain. They feel that the major reason for this phenomena is the failure of physicians to recognize it as a psychosomatic illness. Erena (1978) concurs with this conclusion. He notes that …

Regulation Of Cartilage Acid Hydrolases And Their Relationship To Skeletal Growth, John Richard Hubbard Jan 1980

Regulation Of Cartilage Acid Hydrolases And Their Relationship To Skeletal Growth, John Richard Hubbard

Theses and Dissertations

The in vivo regulation of several acid hydrolases by growth hormone was investigated in an attempt to lend insight into the mechanism of growth hormone action. In addition, the relationship of these enzymes to age-dependent changes in skeletal growth rate was examined. Initial studies showed that hypophysectomy reduced the activity of an unknown cartilage protease, which was assayed by digestion of gelatin-membrane substrates at pH 4.0. Treatment of hypophysectomized rats with growth hormone enhanced this activity to about normal levels. The unidentified protease activity was also shown to be higher in younger, more rapidly growing rats, than in older, less …

Age Differences In Attributions Of Causality: Implications For Intellectual Assessment, Thomas R. Prohaska Jan 1980

Age Differences In Attributions Of Causality: Implications For Intellectual Assessment, Thomas R. Prohaska

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation was designed to test the hypothesis that failure experienced by the individual in a testing situation is moderated by causal attributions and these attributions influence subsequent test measures. The effect of manipulating cause (lack of effort or Lack of ability) to response-independent failure and its relationship to scores on the Reasoning, Hidden Patterns, and Paper Folding Test, in younger an older person's was investigated. The same measures were assessed in a group that experienced the same response-independent-failure but with no explanation offered as to the cause for the failure, a group that was not given any information …

Comparison Of Burned Patients' Perception Of Pain With Nurses' Perception Of Patients' Pain, Merri Diane Walkenstein Jan 1980

Comparison Of Burned Patients' Perception Of Pain With Nurses' Perception Of Patients' Pain, Merri Diane Walkenstein

Theses and Dissertations

Pain is a universal experience. Caring for people in pain is a central aspect of nursing practice. Many studies have been done to determine the physical and psychosocial mechanisms of the pain sensation, in addition to methods of relief. Very little has been done, however, dealing specifically with the pain experienced by the burned patient.

People hospitalized with thermal injuries complain most often of the intensity and long duration of their pain experience. Due to the large number of persons sustaining thermal injuries every year, it is apparent that nurses must familiarize themselves with methods of evaluation and intervention to …

Personality Correlates Of Musical Talent, Walter W. Tunstall Jan 1980

Personality Correlates Of Musical Talent, Walter W. Tunstall

Theses and Dissertations

Existing commentary and research on the nature of musical talent was reviewed and found lacking in conception, primarily because previous researchers had failed to identify the unique creative element a musician contributes to a musical performance. The personality structures of 60 subjects, 32 males and 28 females, were analyzed via the 16PF. A Pearson Product Moment Correlation, an ANOVA, and a second order factor analysis were used to assess the relationship between personality and musical talent for 1) persons with little or no musical ability, 2) highly talented university music majors, and 3) professional performing musicians. Significant relationships were found …

The Effects Of Physical Attractiveness And Empathy On Adjustment And Perceived Adjustment With College Students., Dorothy E. Berg Jan 1980

The Effects Of Physical Attractiveness And Empathy On Adjustment And Perceived Adjustment With College Students., Dorothy E. Berg

Theses and Dissertations

The Problem

A theoretical framework of the physical attractiveness literature to date was presented in the present study. Within this framework, the effects of physical attractiveness on subjects' perception of adjustment were tested in an experimental design using 94 college students. The effects of subject empathy on subjects' perceptions were also tested as it had been suggested by a previous study (Crouse & Mehrabian 1977) that empathy mitigated the effects of physical attractiveness.

Four confederate actors whose physical attractiveness was varied cosmetically were used as ostensible "Peace Corps" applicants in individual 3-minute simulated interviews. A control group was established who …

The Letter To Father Janssens: The Synthesis Of Experience In Teilhard De Chardin And Its Implications For Educational Theory., Arthur John Spring Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The research problem is to examine experience as an epistemological concept in the writings of Teilhard de Chardin using the letter to Father Janssens, dated October 12, 1951, as focus for the study. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze Teilhard's theory of experience as that theory describes the growth and development of man's mind and defines the process by which man comes to know his own nature and that of the world. The study derives from the theory of experience six specific educational principles.Teilhard's theory of experience is identified as a movement of mind in which progress …
