The Role Of Retained Antigen As An Etiological Agent In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Patricia Liccardi Rice Jan 1981

The Role Of Retained Antigen As An Etiological Agent In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Patricia Liccardi Rice

Theses and Dissertations

The cause(s) of arthritis and many other connective tissue diseases are largely unknown. An infectious agent, either bacterial or viral, has not been unequivocally isolated. Theories on the pathogenesis of arthritis abound. Many of these theories implicate the immune system as the problem.

The early information on animal arthridites implicates retained bacterial cell wall antigens as the basis of the arthritis seen. How-ever, numerous types of antigens, both complex polymers and simple proteins, have been shown to persist in immune animals. The antigens persist in the lymph nodes and spleens playing a role in mediating antibody feedback mechanisms. Antigens also …

Stages Of Adult Development For Women Religious And Married Women, Ellen Rufft Jan 1981

Stages Of Adult Development For Women Religious And Married Women, Ellen Rufft

Theses and Dissertations

Components Of State Anxiety For Varying Levels And Dimensions Of Trait Anxiety, Dennis C. Donat Jan 1981

Components Of State Anxiety For Varying Levels And Dimensions Of Trait Anxiety, Dennis C. Donat

Theses and Dissertations

Recent research has provided support for a multidimensional view of trait anxiety to supplant the former unidimensional approach. Unidimensional measures of general trait anxiety have been found to be inadequate as predictors of state anxiety reactions across a wide variety of situations. As such, they are poor measures of general trait anxiety. The present investigation was conducted to examine the possible utility of a single anxiety trait score, summed from the subscales of the Stimulus - Response Inventory of General Trait Anxiety (S-R GTA), a multidimensional measure of trait anxiety, in supplementing the ability of individual subscale scores to predict …

An Investigation Of Identity And Self-Esteem In Traditional Married Women During Their Middle Years, And The Impact Of The Life Planning Seminar, Susan E. Ellett Jan 1981

An Investigation Of Identity And Self-Esteem In Traditional Married Women During Their Middle Years, And The Impact Of The Life Planning Seminar, Susan E. Ellett

Theses and Dissertations

There is contradictory evidence as to whether the middle years are problematic for women. The research indicates that the middle years, particularly the empty nest period, are traumatic for some women, but for others a time of relief. More recent research suggests that for women who do find the middle years problematic, certain types of group experiences may be helpful. The purpose of this study was to investigate this time of life for a specific population of women, traditional married women who have devoted their time primarily to raising a family. This study examined identity and self-esteem in these women …

Effects Of Cognitive Set On The Physiological, Subjective, And Behavioral Responses To Fearful Stimuli, Jerome D. Gilmore Jan 1981

Effects Of Cognitive Set On The Physiological, Subjective, And Behavioral Responses To Fearful Stimuli, Jerome D. Gilmore

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated the effects of cognitive set on the physiological, subjective, and motoric responses of fearful and non-fearful subjects exposed to specific fear stimuli. High, moderate, and low mutilation fear subjects were given instructions designed to persuade them that they were or were not afraid of mutilation stimuli. The extent to which instructions differentially affected subjects in the three fear groups and produced differential effects on responses in the three modalities was examined. The degree to which the physiological, self-report, and behavioral channels responded concordantly was also investigated.

A series of hypotheses were derived which generally indicated that high-fear …

The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control In Physically Abused Women, Betsy Wright Shires Jan 1981

The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control In Physically Abused Women, Betsy Wright Shires

Theses and Dissertations

History can provide some clues concerning the physical abuse of women by men. Beginning in biblical times, women were viewed as the property of men (Steinmetz, 1977). Until 1824 by law, a man was allowed to strike his wife if provoked (Bell, 1977). Under the law, some states still grant "spouse immunity" in cases of assault and battery, where married couples are involved. The focus of this research was to examine the problem of wife abuse through the perspective of social learning theory. Using Roy's theory of adaptation (Roy, 1976), the investigator also examined the area of self-concept as it related …

Chinese Christianity Since 1949: Implications For The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Bruce J. M. Dean

Theses and Dissertations

In the last thirty years, Chinese Christianity has experienced severe persecution. Communism actively sought its subjugation. Despite this, Chinese Christians maintained their faith. When their church organizations became puppets of the state, Christians went underground and continued to worship in house churches. The recently li eralized political climate in China has allowed Christians to more openly practice their faith. The official Protestant and Catholic churches have been rehabilitated. House churches have come out of the closet. Capitalizing on an acute spiritual malaise in China, Christians are experiencing a major and sustained revival. There are ample opportunities for The Church of …

Mormon Land Ownership As A Factor In Evaluating The Extent Of Mormon Settlements And Influence In Missouri 1831-1841, Wayne J. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis has been to demonstrate as clearly as possible the full extent of Mormon Land in Missouri during the years 1831-1841. An identification has been made of the names of several thousand of these early Mormons and will further show the scope of Mormonism during this period. This study will add detail to what previous writers have stated about this trying period for Mormonism.

As accurately as possible, the author has identified where the Mormon settlements were, through graphs and charts. It has been demonstrated that the Mormon population extended beyond the traditional areas they have …

"The Church And Colonel Saunders": Mormon Standard Plan Architecture, Martha Sonntag Bradley Jan 1981

"The Church And Colonel Saunders": Mormon Standard Plan Architecture, Martha Sonntag Bradley

Theses and Dissertations

In the years 1920-80 the Mormon Church developed, expanded and refined an architectural program based on the concept of the standard plan. Standard plan buildings were selected, individualized and built for local ward units under the direction of the Church Building Department which created uniform standards of quality and appearance across the worldwide Church and created a tangible link between foreign members and the central Church.

Although functional and financial considerations directed virtually all design decisions and formed the operative basis of the program other elements also determined the nature of the Mormon approach to building. Growth, in the membership, …

High English proficiency related positively with a more positive attitude toward the target culture group. Those demonstrating high proficiency viewed the general native …

Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry Jan 1981

Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry

Theses and Dissertations

"The Witness" can be viewed as Clinton F. Larson's poetic manifesto that points the direction for much of his subsequent work. Although his poetic "mormonism" has been questioned by several of his critics, this thesis shows that Larson definitely expresses his Mormon faith in "The Witness" as a metaphorical quest for mythic consciousness. While searching in the poem for sacred space and time, Larson seeks to become closer to the divine and powerful center of being, creating at once a metaphor for his quest to understand and assimilate Christ's atonement and a poetic voice from which he can speak for …

The Function Of Physical Education In The Educational Structure Of Plato's Republic, Iain C. Adams Dec 1980

The Function Of Physical Education In The Educational Structure Of Plato's Republic, Iain C. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

The 1960s and 1970s have been periods of critical enquiry for education and the school curriculum. Physical education has been unable to provide a united front to its critics due to rival factions within the profession and the lack of established foci and a logical status of objectives. Seemingly to add weight to arguments and positions some of the factions of physical education have cited Plato as an ally. This has brought nothing but confusion and an appearance of contradiction to Plato's ideas.

The major problem is that the ideas of Plato that pertain to physical education have been artificially …

A Study Of The Christian School Movement, Daniel M. Gleason Dec 1980

A Study Of The Christian School Movement, Daniel M. Gleason

Theses and Dissertations

The research problem is to examine the Christian school movement through an analysis of the literature that it has produced and case studies of five of its actual schools.

The significance of this study lies in the fact that during the past 15 years the field of Education has witnessed the widespread and rapid growth of this movement. Yet recent research had indicated that at present very little is known about it.

The purpose of this study is to explain and describe this Christian school movement: its philosophy, its view of U. S. educational history, and its view of the …

Attention Mechanisms In Emg Biofeedback, Randy Scott Roth Dec 1980

Attention Mechanisms In Emg Biofeedback, Randy Scott Roth

Theses and Dissertations

This study assessed the impact of selected task, instructional and personological variables as they contribute to relaxation during frontalis EMG biofeedback. Subjects (_n = 60) divided equally by sex and high versus low absorption were randomly assigned to one of five groups. Four groups (n = 48) comprised a Feedback x Instruction factorial and were provided either contingent or noncontingent feedback information and pre-training instructions that either emphasized a passive attention approach to acquired self-relaxation or were nonspecific. Care was taken to avoid task instructions for noncontingent feedback subjects which would be deceiving or countertherapeutic. A fifth no-treatment (resting) control …

The Double Accusative In Koine Greek: A Syntactic Study, Terrell A. Malone Dec 1980

The Double Accusative In Koine Greek: A Syntactic Study, Terrell A. Malone

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an analysis of the double accusative in Koine Greek within the framework of relational grammar theory as developed by Perlmutter and Postal. Monostratal and multistratal grammars are compared. Various kinds of evidence, including flagging of predicate dependents case function, passivization, gapping, question-word movement, indefinite relativization and parallel structures are used to argue that multistratal grammar more adequately and concisely accounts for the syntactic behaviour of the double accusative nominals than does a monostratal grammar. It is proposed that indirect object advancement, oblique advancement, subject ascension, and a combination of causative union plus indirect object advancement all can …

Carboxyl Methylation Of Non-Histone Chromosomal Proteins, Douglas P. Quick Dec 1980

Carboxyl Methylation Of Non-Histone Chromosomal Proteins, Douglas P. Quick

Theses and Dissertations

The in vitro methylation of non-histone chromosomal proteins (NHCP) was investigated in nuclei isolated from the brain, liver, and thymus of 6-8-day-old rats. After incubating the nuclei in the presence of 20 μM S-adenosyl-L-[methyl-3H]methionine(l Ci/mmol), the NHCP were separated from histones on hydroxylapatite, and fractionated further on SDS acrylamide slab-gel electrophoresis. After the gels were dried, autoradiography was used to detect 3H-methyl groups associated with these proteins. Four NHCP from the liver and thymus were methylated, while six methylated proteins were detected from the brain. None of the methylated proteins in these tissues corresponded with those from …

A group of 15 mothers receiving aid from the same county agency was randomly chosen from a pool …

Responsivity To An Experimentally Induced Stress As A Function Of Life Change And Personality, Jerry Allan Boriskin Dec 1980

Responsivity To An Experimentally Induced Stress As A Function Of Life Change And Personality, Jerry Allan Boriskin

Theses and Dissertations

Recent research has consistently shown that life change, as measured by the Social Readjustment Rating Scale, is significantly correlated with the onset of physical and/or psychological problems. Despite their statistical significance these correlations account for very little variance. More recently it has been suggested that personality variables may mediate one's ability to cope with life change. In the present study the relationships between life change and the personality measures of Repression-Sensitization, Sensation-Seeking, Health Locus of Control, State-Trait Anxiety and self reported psychological discomfort (Lanyon's PSI Discomfort subscale) were investigated in a multiple regression analysis.

The second major goal of the …
