The Worldwide Evacuation Of Latter-Day Saint Missionaries At The Beginning Of World War Ii, David F. Boone Sr. Jan 1981

The Worldwide Evacuation Of Latter-Day Saint Missionaries At The Beginning Of World War Ii, David F. Boone Sr.

Theses and Dissertations

In 1939, when Germany mobilized its military against neighboring Poland, LDS missionaries were notified to evacuate their missions. In August 1940, the full-time missionaries in the South African and Pacific missions were also evacuated because of the spread of hostilities in Europe. Later the missionaries were released from the missions in South America. By 1943 the only missionaries serving outside of North America were in Hawaii.

All of the more than eight hundred missionaries were transported at Church expense to America, where they were either reassigned to missions within the United States or released to return to their homes. All …

Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin Jan 1981

Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin

Theses and Dissertations

Recently the need for a more clearly defined structural basis for American local history has become acute. Concepts used in national history often fall short of the needs of local history. As a result, both professionals and amateurs are producing a rash of community histories without the benefit of adequate guidelines.

This thesis draws together a number of concepts useful in the development of American local history as a viable academic field of study. It tests these concepts in presenting the history of community in Winder, a small, rural population set in southeastern Idaho.

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Sparsomycin Analogues, Scherer Preston Sanders Jan 1981

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Sparsomycin Analogues, Scherer Preston Sanders

Theses and Dissertations

In 1962, Owen, Dietz, and Camiener reported the isolation of a new antitumor antibiotic from the culture filtrate of Streptomyces sparsogenes. The structure of the crystalline antibiotic, named sparsomycin, remained elusive until 1970, when Wiley and MacKellar reported results of spectroscopic and degradation studies which elucidated the structure. In addition to the molecular structure, investigators have examined the mechanism of action, toxicity, and related analogues, striving to establish sparsomycin or a synthetic analogue's usefulness as an effective chemotherapeutic agent.

The initial pharmacological evaluation of sparsomycin revealed it possessed activity against KB human epidermoid carcinoma cells, a variety of gram-negative and …

The cerebellum was smaller and had fewer granule cells. The molecular layer was thinner and there was a persistence of the external granule cell layer. The normal cytoarchitecture of the cerebellar cortex was maintained in zinc deficient pups; however, basket, …

Study Of The Optical Constants Of Bismuth Tellurium Sulfide., Vinod Kumar Nangia Jan 1981

Study Of The Optical Constants Of Bismuth Tellurium Sulfide., Vinod Kumar Nangia

Theses and Dissertations

Experimental measurements of the optical reflectance of bismuth tellurium sulfide, Bi(,2)(Te(,1-x)S(,x))(,3); x = 0.48 were carried out both at normal and oblique incidence angles over a range of wavelengths. Bismuth tellurium sulfide is a uniaxial crystal that grows as a layered structure in sets of five atomic layers called quintuple layers. These layers are perpendicular to the optic axis of the crystal. Due to week Van der Waals bonds between the adjacent quintuple layers, the crystal cleaves easily along these layers and presents atomically smooth surfaces for reflectance studies. The measured reflectance spectra were analyzed by two different methods to …

Mechanisms Of Glucose Utilization In Isolated Perfused Rat Livers., Katherine Ann Sukalski Jan 1981

Mechanisms Of Glucose Utilization In Isolated Perfused Rat Livers., Katherine Ann Sukalski

Theses and Dissertations

Net glucose uptake was studied in isolated perfused livers from fed and fasted rates in the presence of discriminant inhibitors of enzymes responsible for glucose phosphorylation. N-Acetyl-glucosamine, a potent inhibitor of glucokinase and hexokinase, significantly inhibited net glucose uptake in livers from fed but not fasted rats. This result could not be explained if glucokinase and hexokinase were the only enzymes responsible for glucose phosphorylation in the fasted state. Under some conditions glucose uptake was inibited by 3-O-methylglucose and by ornithine. Both of these compounds are inhibitors of glucose phosphorylation via the phosphotransferase activity of glucose-6-phosphatase but have no effect …
