A Study Of The Relationship Between The Human Will And The Learning Process: An Examination Of Stavrogin, A Character In Dostoevsky's The Possessed, Gurney D. Toews
Theses and Dissertations
The research problem is to examine the epistemological nature of the relationship which exists between the human will and the learning process using the development of a fictional character, i.e,, Stavrogin in Dostoevsky’s The Possessed, as focus for the study.
The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze Dostoevsky’s theory of will as that theory describes the educational growth and development of the individual and defines the process by which the individual comes to know his own nature and that of the world. The study derives from the theory of will specific educational principles.
Dostoevsky’s theory of will …

Lateralized Emotional And Cognitive Processes In Personality, Steven Lee Dawson
Lateralized Emotional And Cognitive Processes In Personality, Steven Lee Dawson
Theses and Dissertations
Research on hemispheric specialization has generated theories of lateralized cognition, personality traits, and emotional experience and expression. Of these the research on lateralized cognition has provided the most reliable and interpretable results. Using the lateralized cognitive attributes as a guideline, a personality model of hemispheric activation is hypothesized which suggests that each hemisphere provides a distinctive overall approach to information gathering, cognitive processing, emotional experience and behavioral expression. This model predicts that detai1-oriented perception, rumination, and analytic processing are the domain of the left hemisphere, while a more spatial perceptual approach and holistic cognitive processing are the domain of the …

The aqueous gasifier effluent was collected from the spray washer of the Grand Forks Energy Technology Center's slagging fixed-bed gasifier during run RA176.
Raw gasifier effluent is treatable using solvent extraction with n-butyl acetate and isopropyl ether as solvents. A total capital investment of approximately $5,494,800 can be expected for a treatment facility using n-butyl acetate as the extracting solvent, capable of purifying wastewater from a slagging gasifier plant with a large enough capacity to produce 250 …
The Role Of Pioneering Species On The Reclamation Of North Dakota Surface Mined Lands, Louis R. Iverson
The Role Of Pioneering Species On The Reclamation Of North Dakota Surface Mined Lands, Louis R. Iverson
Theses and Dissertations
Four reclaimed mined areas in western North Dakota ranging in age from one to four years since mining, along with a site from a native mixed grass prairie for comparison, were studied to quantify the early successional changes in floristic composition, soil chemistry and plant chemical composition. The mined sites had been contoured, topsoiled, fertilized, and seeded. However, analysis of the seed bank in topsoil showed that the most dominant colonizers immigrate after topsoiling. Of the 95 species encountered, Kochia scoparia was the most dominant in the first two years following mining. Kochia had relatively low densities 2 in the …

Extraversion, Introversion And Anxiety In Relation To Affiliation In College Students, Thomas Matthew Krapu
Extraversion, Introversion And Anxiety In Relation To Affiliation In College Students, Thomas Matthew Krapu
Theses and Dissertations
Similarities between personality defects resulting from disruptive, inadequate affective development and problems of extreme extraversion and introversion suggested that developmental ego psychology and object relations theories might be useful in understanding interpersonal functioning in general and how people affiliate in particular. Research on affiliation indicated that extraverts are more affiliative and introverts less affillative, under a condition of high anxiety. A greater predisposition to become anxious (trait anxiety) was also associated with reduced affiliative tendencies under a high anxiety condition. Other research suggested that women and first born subjects were more affiliative than men and later born subjects. The present …

Introducing North Dakota Writers To North Dakota Readers, Kathie Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
My study of the literature of North Dakota began ten years ago, when the topic for the annual writers conference at the University of North Dakota was the literature of the Northern Plains. At that conference I listened to Lois Phillips Hudson, Thomas McGrath, Richard Lyons, and other regional writers. Since that conference, I have been reading the literature of North Dakota and learning about the writers, and I have introduced the literature of North Dakota to my students in Grand Forks and Bismarck. My students, like the rest of us, have had the initial reaction, "Literature--Here?"
This study consists …

Rabbit Heart And Vascular Responses To Carotid Occlusion And Peep With Denervation And Selective Adrenergic Blockade., Mark Robert Magnusson
Theses and Dissertations
Mechanical ventilation with inspiratory positive pressure and positive, end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) has been used to improve arterial oxygenation and to re-expand and stabilize collapsed areas of the lung in patients with non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema and adult respiratory distress syndrome. However lung hyperinflation by PEEP results in decreased cardiac output and mean arterial pressure. The interaction of the mechanical and the neuroreflex effects which alter cardiovascular function during PEEP have not been examined in a study designed to evaluate the components (arterial baroreflex, cardiopulmonary mechanoreflex, and mechanical) and their integrated effects. This study examined the cardiovascular responses to 2.5 cm H(,2)O PEEP …

The role of extra- and intracellular acid-base status and divalent cations in the onset and severity of withdrawal from chronic ethanol intoxication was investigated in mice and rats. Body temperatures in both species were significantly decreased throughout withdrawal. While temperature corrected bicarbonate and extracellular pH, and brain Zn('++) concentrations were significantly increased in alcohol-exposed mice, all other parameters monitored in mice and rats indicate the lack of alkalosis or changes in Mg('++) or Ca('++) concentrations during withdrawal. The severity of withdrawal following chronic intoxication was not affected by either 5% or 15% CO(,2) therapy during the withdrawal period. Fifteen percent CO(,2) …
Studies Of The Azasulfonium Functionality: The Cyclization Of Methionine And Other 3-(Amino)Thioethers To Form Isothiazolidinum Salts., Darrell William Swank
Studies Of The Azasulfonium Functionality: The Cyclization Of Methionine And Other 3-(Amino)Thioethers To Form Isothiazolidinum Salts., Darrell William Swank
Theses and Dissertations
The formation and stability of the azasulfonium functionality within the isothiazolidinium structure was investigated. A variety of S- and N-substituted aminothioethers, isothiazolidinium salts and sulfoxides were synthesized, isolated and characterized. Studies of the reaction of a variety of methionine derivatives and analogues with iodine indicated that cyclization occurred when a trimethylene bridge separated the amine and thioether functional groups. The amine could be primary or secondary but could not be in amide linkage and the sulfur could not exist as a sulfoxide or sulfonium salt, but only as a thioether. Significant yields of isothiazolidinium salts were obtained when N-halo compounds …
