Cronobacter Sakazakii Genes Contributing To Persistencein Low-Moisture Dairy Matrices, Kaitlin Ash Hartmann
Cronobacter Sakazakii Genes Contributing To Persistencein Low-Moisture Dairy Matrices, Kaitlin Ash Hartmann
Theses and Dissertations
Cronobacter sakazakii is a gram-negative opportunistic pathogen known to survive in dry environments and food matrices, such as infant formula. This foodborne bacterium can cause fatal human infections of the blood, central nervous system, and gastrointestinal tract; it is also problematic in wounds and urinary tract infections. Preterm infants and immunocompromised individuals are in higher risk categories related to necrotizing enterocolitis, neonatal sepsis, and meningitis due to this organism. Therefore, there is a need for increased understanding of how this bacterium is able to persist in thermally treated low-moisture products that do not support growth. The objective of this research …
Toward Precision Medicine With Nanopore Technology, Trang Andrea Vu
Toward Precision Medicine With Nanopore Technology, Trang Andrea Vu
Theses and Dissertations
Currently, when patients are diagnosed with cancer, they often receive a treatment based on the type and stage of the tumor. However, different patients may respond to the same treatment differently, due to the variation in their genomic alteration profile. Thus, it is essential to understand the effect of genomic alterations on cancer drug efficiency and engineer devices to monitor these changes for therapeutic response prediction. Nanopore-based detection technology features devices containing a nanometer-scale pore embedded in a thin membrane that can be utilized for DNA sequencing, biosensing, and detection of biological or chemical modifications on single molecules. Overall, this …
Stress And Performance Anxiety Intervention For Musicians:A Biofeedback And Compassion Focused Therapy Intervention, Tara Austin
Stress And Performance Anxiety Intervention For Musicians:A Biofeedback And Compassion Focused Therapy Intervention, Tara Austin
Theses and Dissertations
Performance anxiety and stress are forefront problems for performers in the music industry. Within music training programs, these problems are particularly debilitating. These students are concerned both about performance situations and also their personal lives. The following study compared two treatments, heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) on the effects of cortisol and self-reported stress and mood before and after a required end of semester performance. Thirty students enrolled in a college music program participated in the five-visit intervention (14 in the HRV biofeedback group and 16 in the CFT group). Stress levels, measured by self-report, …
Reliability And Validity Practices In Randomized Controlled Trials: Current Trends And Recommendations, Jennifer A. Z. Romano
Reliability And Validity Practices In Randomized Controlled Trials: Current Trends And Recommendations, Jennifer A. Z. Romano
Theses and Dissertations
The verity of conclusions drawn from psychological research hinges on the reliability and validity of the measures used to collect the data. Any research conducted using measures with low reliability or validity is rendered essentially useless; thus, reporting reliability and validity evidence for measures employed in research is an essential component in creating rigorous, replicable research. Multiple reporting standards have been implemented and revised over the years with the intent to improve measurement and reporting practices within clinical psychology, though few guidelines have been suggested regarding adequate reporting practices for studies' measures. We reviewed a representative sample of randomized clinical …
Fabrication And Characterization Of Polycaprolactone-Based Nanofibrous Scaffolds For Neuronal Tissue Regeneration, Manar Ahmed Elnaggar
Fabrication And Characterization Of Polycaprolactone-Based Nanofibrous Scaffolds For Neuronal Tissue Regeneration, Manar Ahmed Elnaggar
Theses and Dissertations
Recent advances in regenerative medicine have given hope in overcoming and rehabilitating complex medical conditions. In this regard, biomaterial scaffolds are employed to support cellular adhesion, elongation, and growth, thus promoting sound healing and restoration of function after trauma. The biopolymer poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) may be a promising candidate for tissue regeneration, in this regard, although lacking essential bioactivity. The present study used PCL nanofibers (NFs) scaffold decorated with the extracellular matrix proteins fibronectin and laminin for neuronal regeneration. The potential for the combined proteins to support neuronal cells and promote axonal growth was investigated. Two NFs scaffolds were produced with …
Structural Decomposition Of Deviant Cyber Flash Mobs On Twitter: Examining Statistical And Network Features Using Focal Structure Analysis, Billy Spann
Theses and Dissertations
Online Social Networks (OSNs) are largely considered a powerful vehicle to disseminate information. It is common to see social media used for propaganda maneuvering, disinformation campaigns, and crowd manipulation. These platforms also provide a method to coordinate and influence behavior. Many crime organizations use social media to coordinate events and then quickly disperse making it difficult to identify the actors. The focus of this study is to advance our understanding of the use of collective action theory measurements in communication networks extracted from Deviant Cyber Flash Mobs (DCFMs). We assess the formation of these cyber collective groups by analyzing the …
The Reading Eye, Ruminating Body, And Regulated Gaze: ( Re ) Constructing Gender In The Old English Lives Of Saints, Thelma Trujillo
The Reading Eye, Ruminating Body, And Regulated Gaze: ( Re ) Constructing Gender In The Old English Lives Of Saints, Thelma Trujillo
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the eleventh-century collection of Early English hagiography, the Lives of Saints; specifically, four female saints’ lives, those of Saint Agnes, Cecilia, Eugenia and Euphrosyne. Using Judith Butler’s gender performativity theory, I consider how female gender is constructed in these texts by examining gender as manifested in the late antique period when they were first written, and then, in the Early English period when they were copied and translated. This research on gender combines an array of literature, such as Latin theology, Old English laws and penitentials, Latin and Old English hagiography, and contemporary theoretical frameworks. My main …
Do Shape And Volume Of Subcortical Neural Structures Involved In Reward Processing Correlate With Body Mass And Food Reward In Adolescent Females?, Kelsey K. Zaugg
Do Shape And Volume Of Subcortical Neural Structures Involved In Reward Processing Correlate With Body Mass And Food Reward In Adolescent Females?, Kelsey K. Zaugg
Theses and Dissertations
Background: The prevalence of adolescent obesity has increased drastically in the last few decades, spurring research examining causes and consequences of this chronic health condition. Neuroimaging techniques are being used to determine possible neural correlates of obesity that could help inform research in this field. However, the research among adolescents is not as abundant and findings so far are contradictory. This study sought to examine the association of the shape and volume of subcortical brain structures involved in reward processing with weight status in adolescent females. Additionally, this study sought to determine if the shape and volume of these structures …
An Analysis Of Police Shootings In Dallas, Texas, 2003-2018, Steven Mccain
An Analysis Of Police Shootings In Dallas, Texas, 2003-2018, Steven Mccain
Theses and Dissertations
Legal establishments authorize police discretion of deadly force if they believe the threat to life or great bodily harm outweighs to threat presented by a criminal. Policing has been reactive when modern weapons of the times are used for criminal purposes. The adaptation process by police has made firearms necessary tools for conflict resolution. The Supreme Court also plays a role in determining what is reasonable use of deadly force, as these situations are rare with little precedent that require judicial review. Research on deadly force examines micro-level characteristics to better understand these situations. This study contributes to existing literature …
Gender Vs. Sex: Defining Meaning In A Modern World Through Use Of Corpora And Semantic Surveys, Mary Elizabeth Garceau
Gender Vs. Sex: Defining Meaning In A Modern World Through Use Of Corpora And Semantic Surveys, Mary Elizabeth Garceau
Theses and Dissertations
Considerable resources in U.S. legal studies are devoted to determining the precise meaning of contested terms specifically in statutory interpretation. Traditional judicial approaches have defined meaning using dictionaries. This reliance has led to Mouritsen’s (2010) observation that "the judicial conception of lexical meaning—i.e., what judges think about what words mean … is often [subjectively] outcome determinative." Beginning with Mouritsen’s (2010) article, a movement in U.S. legal scholarship offers corpus linguistics as a more objective method to resolving contested meaning (Lee and Mouritsen, 2018). However, I assert that weaknesses still exist in contemporary applications of corpus linguistics to legal interpretation. I …
Adolescent Depressive Symptomology: Do Siblings Hurt Or Help?, Jared D. Thorpe
Adolescent Depressive Symptomology: Do Siblings Hurt Or Help?, Jared D. Thorpe
Theses and Dissertations
Adolescents in the United States are currently experiencing a mental health crisis. While evidence shows that parents play an important role in shaping the mental health of youth, little has been done to understand how siblings may contribute to the psychological well-being of adolescents. I examine this association through the lenses of social capital and resource dilution perspectives. Social capital theory suggests that siblings may act as an additional source of resources, such as social support, which promote positive mental health. In contrast, resource dilution theory posits that the presence of siblings decreases the availability of parental resource in a …
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Catalytic Application Of Porous Resin, Mahboubeh Nabavinia
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Catalytic Application Of Porous Resin, Mahboubeh Nabavinia
Theses and Dissertations
The abilities to tailor catalytic functional groups and chemical characteristics onto a robust polymer structure make mesoporous phenolic resins great candidates for catalytic support applications. The use of a template synthesis method for configuring a catalytic structure is neither commercially nor environmentally friendly. In this Ph.D. thesis, new one-pot template-free methods for synthesizing mesoporous metal-doped phenol-formaldehyderesin were developed. The methods facilitate scaling for industrial catalytic applications in pharmaceutical, environmental, and medical applications. Heterogeneous palladium centered catalytic mesoporous structures were synthesized by a single-stage template-free method. BET adsorption measurements, SEM, EDX, XPS, and TEM were used to study the surface area, …

Isothermal Inactivation Of Salmonella, Listeria Monocytogenes, And Enterococcus Faecium Nrrl-B 2354 In Peanut Butter, Powder Infant Formula, And Wheat Flour, Adam Robert Quinn
Theses and Dissertations
Pathogens in low-moisture foods are an emerging food safety concern due to increased survival and thermotolerance in matrices with low water activity. However, limited data is publicly available for the thermotolerance of Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., and Enterococcus faecium NRRL B-2354 (a Salmonella surrogate). The aims of this study were to identify differences in thermal inactivation rates between these organisms in three different low-moisture foods. Three model low-moisture foods (peanut butter, powder infant formula, and wheat flour) were inoculated with either E. faecium, a Salmonella spp. cocktail, or a L. monocytogenes cocktail using a dry inoculation method for a total …

A System For Foot Joint Kinetics – Integrating Plantar Pressure/Shear With Multisegment Foot Modeling, Spencer Ray Petersen
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Instrumented gait analysis and inverse dynamics are commonly used in research and clinical practice to calculate lower extremity joint kinetics, such as power and work. However, multisegment foot (MSF) model kinetics have been limited by ground reaction force (GRF) measurements. New technology enables simultaneous capture of plantar pressure and shear stress distributions but has not yet been used with motion capture. Integrating MSF models and pressure/shear measurements will enhance the analysis of foot joint kinetics. The purpose of this study was to develop methodology to integrate these systems, then analyze the effects of speed on foot joint kinetics. Methods: …

Electrochemical Sensors Enhanced By Convection And By 3d Arrays Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotubes, Benjamin James Brownlee
Theses and Dissertations
Early and accessible diagnostics are important elements to reducing the negative side-effects of untreated disease. One key advancement in diagnostic monitoring is through the development of highly sensitive sensors that have the capability to detect lower concentrations, while still remaining accessible for point-of-care use. This dissertation characterizes electrochemical sensing platforms that are enhanced by convection and by 3D electrodes made from high surface area, vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs). Free-standing VACNTs were patterned into microchannel arrays for flow-through amperometric sensing. Convective mass transfer enhancement was shown to improve sensor performance in amperometric sensing through the use of high surface area …
The Effects Of Immune Regulation And Dysregulation: Helper T Cell Receptor Affinity, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus And Cancer Risk, And Vaccine Hesitancy, Deborah K. Johnson
The Effects Of Immune Regulation And Dysregulation: Helper T Cell Receptor Affinity, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus And Cancer Risk, And Vaccine Hesitancy, Deborah K. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Helper T cells direct the immunological response to foreign pathogens and cancer. To become activated, helper T cells must recognize unique peptides presented on major histocompatibility complex II (pMHCII) by antigen presenting cells (APCs) with their T cell receptor (TCR). While much is known about helper T cell activation signaling cascades and the subsequent roles of helper T cell subsets, the initiation of helper T cell activation by the TCR and other co-receptors is less well understood. Specifically, the affinity of the TCR for its pMHCII can change helper T cell subset fate, proliferation, and alter the risk for activation …
Understanding Attraction, Behavior, And Identity In The Asexual Community, Corey Doremus
Understanding Attraction, Behavior, And Identity In The Asexual Community, Corey Doremus
Theses and Dissertations
Models of sexuality have evolved substantially in the past several decades through the inclusion of new aspects which were previously overlooked. Components such as romantic attraction and behavior have also traditionally been included in models of sexuality. However, romantic and sexual orientations do not coincide for all individuals. A population for which this is true and one that has developed a robust language for discussing romantic orientation is the asexual community. The current study aims to examine romantic and sexual orientation through patterns found within the factors of attraction, behavior, and identity in the asexual community. Within this sample, aspects …
Graph-Based Whole Genome Phylogenomics, Masaki Stanley Fujimoto
Graph-Based Whole Genome Phylogenomics, Masaki Stanley Fujimoto
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding others is a deeply human urge basic in our existential quest. It requires knowing where someone has come from and where they sit amongst peers. Phylogenetic analysis and genome wide association studies seek to tell us where we’ve come from and where we are relative to one another through evolutionary history and genetic makeup. Current methods do not address the computational complexity caused by new forms of genomic data, namely long-read DNA sequencing and increased abundances of assembled genomes, that are becoming evermore abundant. To address this, we explore specialized data structures for storing and comparing genomic information. This …

A Study Of The Anthropogenic Impact In Farmington Bay Through Isotopic And Elemental Analysis, Nathan Vaun Gunnell
Theses and Dissertations
The influence of human activity on surrounding environments is an important field of research. With respect to aquatic settings, lacustrine deposits provide excellent proxies of environmental change since the sediment accumulates at a relatively constant rate, recording environmental change. This study employs isotopic, mineral, and chemical records from Farmington Bay freeze cores, in particular δ13C, δ15N, and 210Pb isotopes as well as phosphorus level fluctuation and trace metal analysis. In particular, 210Pb isotopes permit estimation of the age of sediment with depth and δ15N, δ13C, and concentration of P provides a record of changing nutrient sources and level of eutrophication. …
"The World Without A Self": Non-Being And Ontological Leveling In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Morgan Ashley Lewis
"The World Without A Self": Non-Being And Ontological Leveling In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Morgan Ashley Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
Virginia Woolf is perhaps best known for her explorations and depictions of human consciousness. However, more contemporary science reveals that consciousness is only a small part of what constitutes our brain function. Rather, there are a dual functions within the human brain: consciousness and cognition. This nonconscious cognition is what allows us to see patterns, to make judgements, and to act reflexively, while consciousness is the function that shapes our individual identity and the story we tell about ourselves. Though previous studies have focused primarily on Woolf's representations of consciousness in her short stories and novels, there is much left …
A Treatise On The Outwardly Nature Of Consciousness, Ramy Amin
A Treatise On The Outwardly Nature Of Consciousness, Ramy Amin
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis we propose a sketch towards an outwardly understanding of the nature of consciousness. We begin by arguing that all thought involves phenomenal character, then establish that all phenomenal character involves phenomenal concepts, which allows us to conclude that all thought involves phenomenal concepts. Finally, we survey the philosophical theoretical space to ground our thesis within established theories of consciousness, perception, and epistemology.

Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims at understanding Cairo’s production and reproduction through the eyes of the street children, who are the abandoned communities living in street situations. The street children are the main storytellers of Cairo as a city. The research moves away from seeing them as a burden on society or as mere subjects of poverty alleviation and development programs and rethinks their contribution to the city, its labor, and to understandings of the body, life, and death. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork over a seven months period, in Syada Zaynab, Abu El reesh, Dokki, Maadi, Heliopolis, and downtown neighbourhoods, the research …
Toy-Stories Of The (Im)Material Life Of Things: Public Art Of Becoming In The Moulidbodies, Objects, Mimesis, Marlies Lieve T. Van Coillie
Toy-Stories Of The (Im)Material Life Of Things: Public Art Of Becoming In The Moulidbodies, Objects, Mimesis, Marlies Lieve T. Van Coillie
Theses and Dissertations
The moulid—a popular festival in Egypt that celebrates venerated figures—has become an object of sanitization and ritualization by the state and state religion. The moulid has become an opposite figure of modernity. It has become meaningful as a familiar irrational messy thing that confuses rational knowledge about the moulid. Rather than abstracting the meaning of the moulid as something senseless, the thesis illuminates how messiness generates meaningful knowledge. The thesis immanently plunges in the moulid to trace how through materials, objects, and bodies the festival comes into being. In telling a material story through participant observation and in taking Ingold’s …
Teacher-Student Relationship Quality: Teachers' Theories Of Actions In Egyptian Schools, Lamiaa Mohamed Fathy Eid
Teacher-Student Relationship Quality: Teachers' Theories Of Actions In Egyptian Schools, Lamiaa Mohamed Fathy Eid
Theses and Dissertations
A robust body of research has focused on the significance of teacher-student relationship quality (TSRQ) and how it plays a substantial role in the trajectory of students’ development, where teachers are typically seen as the main actor in improving this relationship. Nonetheless, minimal research attention has been directed towards exploring teachers’ perceptions of TSRQ. Accordingly, this qualitative study was carried out to explore teachers’ perceptions concerning the quality of TSR, who work at two schools affiliated to the School-University Partnership for Peer Communities of Learners project. The study adopted Argyris and Schon’s theories of actions as its theoretical framework to …

Analyzing Stance In Online Threat Discourse By Anti-Immigration Attackers: An Integrated Approach, Marwa Mustafa
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examines the construct of stance in two subsequent threat manifestos recently published by anti-immigrant attackers in the year 2019. The first one, The Great Replacement, was published online by Brenton Tarrant before shooting and “murdering 51 people in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand” (Roy, 2020) in March 2019. The second manifesto, The Inconvenient Truth, was published online as well by Patrick Crusius before “killing 22 people and injuring dozens of others at an El Paso Walmart” in Texas, USA (Moore & Berman, 2020) in August 2019. For this purpose, a ‘synergy’ of critical discourse analysis (CDA) …
Mir-590-3p Suppresses Cellular Migration And Clonogenicity And Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition In The Hepg2 Cell Line By Targeting Mdm2 And Setd7, Alaa Youssef
Theses and Dissertations
MiRNAs signature is dysregulated in various types of cancer, and several miRNAs have a dual regulatory role either as tumor suppressors or oncogenes depending on the tissue context. MiR-590-3p has been previously identified to regulate different cancers, yet its role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still elusive with contradictory findings. In our study, the expression levels of miR-590-3p, as well as its function in HCC, were examined in two different HCC cell lines: HepG2 and SNU449 that represent an early and advanced stage of HCC, respectively. Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction analysis revealed that miR-590-3p is downregulated in HCC and its …

Teachers' Views About The Effectiveness Of Short Visits On Their Instructional Performances, Gelan Hesham Abdou Ahmed Mahmoud
Theses and Dissertations
Supervisors from the Central science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Unit conduct unannounced classroom observations to ameliorate the quality of teaching and learning inside public STEM schools. After conducting several classroom visits, supervisors posited that teachers integrate instructional methodologies that reinforce low-order thinking skills and rote memorization of facts (World Bank, 2017). Thus, the aim of this quantitative study is to describe teachers’ views about the effectiveness of short visits on their instructional performances. Sixty-four teachers were conveniently selected from three public Egyptian STEM schools, located in Giza, Cairo, and Qalyubia governorates and were requested to complete a 5-point Likert …
