Taking Flight: An Independent Living Facility For Emancipated Foster Youth, Kristy Mcdaniel Leitzel
Taking Flight: An Independent Living Facility For Emancipated Foster Youth, Kristy Mcdaniel Leitzel
Theses and Dissertations
Motivation
Many of us think about foster care in the context of younger children removed from home. However, little thought is given to youth that age out of the foster care system and the associated challenges and risks they face, namely in the area of housing.
Youth in foster care often receive minimal support in making the transition to independence and are frequently forced into instant adulthood. They are faced with an abrupt end of support at a time when they have not yet mastered the educational, social, or economic survival skills necessary to be independent in the community (Haas, …

A Face Recognition Method Using Deep Learning To Identify Mask And Unmask Objects, Saroj Mishra
Theses and Dissertations
At the present, the use of face masks is growing day by day and it is mandated in most places across the world. People are encouraged to cover their faces when in public areas to avoid the spread of infection which can minimize the transmission of Covid-19 by 65 percent (according to the public health officials). So, it is important to detect people not wearing face masks. Additionally, face recognition has been applied to a wide area for security verification purposes since its performance, accuracy, and reliability [15] are better than any other traditional techniques like fingerprints, passwords, PINs, and …
Role Of Aurora Kinase A, Rab4a, And Endolysosomes In The Development Of Alzheimer’S Disease-Like Pathology, Zahra Afghah
Role Of Aurora Kinase A, Rab4a, And Endolysosomes In The Development Of Alzheimer’S Disease-Like Pathology, Zahra Afghah
Theses and Dissertations
Endosomes and lysosomes (endolysosomes) are organelles that play key roles in cell survival and cell death. These acidic intracellular organelles are the principal sites for intracellular hydrolytic activity required for the maintenance of cellular homeostasis. Endolysosomes are involved in the degradation of plasma membrane components, extracellular macromolecules, as well as intracellular macromolecules and cellular fragments. Understanding the physiological significance and pathological relevance of endolysosomes is now complicated by relatively recent findings of physical and functional interactions between endolysosomes and other intracellular organelles including endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, plasma membranes, and peroxisomes. Indeed, evidence clearly indicates that endolysosome dysfunction and inter-organellar signaling …

The Impact Of Injury On Depression In Athletes: A Systematic Review, Nergis Akkaya
Theses and Dissertations
There are nearly 500,00 collegiate and professional athletes in the United States, and studies have shown how physical and mental demands of practice and competition (e.g., overtraining, exhaustion, injury) in addition to other external elements (e.g., trauma, retirement) adversely impact mental health. Injuries create a variety of emotional responses some of which can negatively affect athlete well-being. The focus of this systematic review was to build connections between mental health and sport and address two primary research questions:1. In what ways do injuries impact athlete depression? 2. How is depression experienced among athletes as a result of an injury? A …
Translocation Of Yops By Yersinia Pestis Into Canine Cell Lines, Betsy Louise Young
Translocation Of Yops By Yersinia Pestis Into Canine Cell Lines, Betsy Louise Young
Theses and Dissertations
Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, secretes a set of virulence proteins called Yops when in contact with eukaryotic cells. A subset of these Yops is translocated directly into the cytosol of the host eukaryotic cells by the type III secretion system. Using a protein tag-based reporter system, this study is focused on the translocation of these Yops into the cytosol of canine derived cell lines: MDCK and DH82. The MDCK cell line is a canine derived epithelial cell line, and the DH82 cell line is a canine derived monocyte cell line. The reporter system uses a phosphorylatable peptide …
Trajectories Of Medication Non-Adherence With Time-Varying Predictors And Association With Health Outcomes: A Comparison Of Classical Statistical Methods With Machine Learning Algorithms, Vasco Pontinha
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Medication adherence is a major obstacle to improving health care outcomes in long-term therapies for chronic diseases. According to the World Health Organization, interventions for improving medication adherence can have a higher impact on the health of the population than any other advance in medical treatments. Approximately 125,000 individuals die every year in the U.S. because of non-adherence to medication, representing societal costs of $100-289 billion. Previous research has successfully used group-based trajectories methods to identify similar longitudinal medication adherence trajectories. However, medication adherence is not an isolated behavior and is influenced by many factors that current interventions fail …

Landscape Ecology Influence On Population Dynamics And Gene Flow: A Muskrat’S Tale, Ayla A. Morehouse
Landscape Ecology Influence On Population Dynamics And Gene Flow: A Muskrat’S Tale, Ayla A. Morehouse
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding movement patterns across a landscape is an essential tool for wildlife managers to understand and predict population dynamics, interactions, and susceptibility to disease and environmental changes. Part of this is due to population spatial synchrony being driven by three primary factors: dispersal, the “Moran Effect”, and trophic interactions. We seek to understand if dispersal may play a larger role in population synchrony and, if so, what landscape features may hinder the movement of muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus), a small semiaquatic mammal that relies on ditches and shallow wetlands for habitat and local movement. In this study we genotyped eleven microsatellite …

The Role Of Slu7 In Spliceosome Function In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Sovira A. Chaudhry
Theses and Dissertations
The removal of introns from pre-messenger RNA via splicing in the nucleus is an essential step in gene expression. In recent decades, significant effort has been made to understand the chemical mechanisms of splicing reactions and the composition of the spliceosome that catalyzes them. Yet very little is known about the exact function of many splicing factors and small proteins within the spliceosome. Slu7, a pre-mRNA splicing factor, is essential during the second catalytic step of splicing because it interacts with several proteins and stabilizes the active site conformation. It has been found that Slu7 is involved in 3' splice …

Beyond The Binary Male: A Systematic Review Of Gender-Responsive Modifications To Risk Assessment Tools, Devin Randle
Beyond The Binary Male: A Systematic Review Of Gender-Responsive Modifications To Risk Assessment Tools, Devin Randle
Theses and Dissertations
The American Psychological Association’s (APA) ethical guidelines identify that psychological tests should only be utilized on populations for which reliability and validity have been established. Likewise, the APA specifies gender to be nonbinary, encouraging clinicians to utilize inclusive and accurate measures. Following such guidelines when conducting violence risk assessments with women and individuals who identify as non-binary is currently challenging because a majority of violence risk assessment tools utilize a male normative sample. Applying such tools to populations beyond a cisgender male can result in misclassifications of individual risk. When risk is misclassified, improper interventions are utilized, which leads to …
