Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin

Theses and Dissertations

Recently the need for a more clearly defined structural basis for American local history has become acute. Concepts used in national history often fall short of the needs of local history. As a result, both professionals and amateurs are producing a rash of community histories without the benefit of adequate guidelines.

This thesis draws together a number of concepts useful in the development of American local history as a viable academic field of study. It tests these concepts in presenting the history of community in Winder, a small, rural population set in southeastern Idaho.

1. What is the length of time required for glass thermometers to register the temperature in neonates at the rectal and axillary sites?

2. Do significant differences exist between simultaneous axillary and rectal temperature recordings in neonates?

3. What is the relationship between axillary and rectal temperature recordings at specified time intervals in neonates?

This study examined the relationship between Type A coronary-prone behavior pattern, academic achievement and life satisfaction. The subjects were 87 undergraduates selected for their extreme scores on the Jenkins Activity Survey, Form T. There were 41 Type As and 46 Type Bs. In 1962, Owen, Dietz, and Camiener reported the isolation of a new antitumor antibiotic from the culture filtrate of Streptomyces sparsogenes. The structure of the crystalline antibiotic, named sparsomycin, remained elusive until 1970, when Wiley and MacKellar reported results of spectroscopic and degradation studies which elucidated the structure. In addition to the molecular structure, investigators have examined the mechanism of action, toxicity, and related analogues, striving to establish sparsomycin or a synthetic analogue's usefulness as an effective chemotherapeutic agent.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between locus of control and psychological well-being for different environmental situations. Two different environments were selected, the military environment as an example of a situation where events are frequently beyond individual control, and the university environment as an example of a situation where individuals have more control over the events in their lives. Internal and external subjects from both environments were compared on psychological well-being, a linear composite of self-concept and anxiety. Electron donor acceptor complexes of the donors biphenylene (BP) and some ferrocenes have been studied by NMR spectroscopy to examine the effects of donor ring currents on acceptor chemical shifts.Equilibrium constants and the differences in chemical shifts between free and complexed acceptor ((DELTA)(,o) values) for the complexes of BP with the acceptors 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB), 1,4-dinitrobenzene (DNB), N-methylsuccinimide (NMS), tetrafluoro-1,4-benzoquinone (FAN), and 1,4-dicyano-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene (TFTN) have been obtained by ('1)H and ('19)F NMR spectroscopy. Problem. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between sex-role and self-concept for males and females, and to translate the findings into statements about male and female self-concept patterns. The null hypotheses tested were: (1)No relationship exists between sex-role and self-concept for males. (2)No relationship exists between sex-role and self-concept for females. (3)When males and females are compared across sex, sex-role, and sex by sex-role, no differences in self-concept exist.Procedure. Rat pups suckled to severely zinc deficient mothers from birth were killed at 21 days of age. The cerebella were then examined by light and electron microscopy. Dendritic development was analyzed on Golgi-stained sections both qualitatively and quantitatively. Impaired pup growth, alopecia, hunched back posture and decreased femur zinc were seen in zinc deficient pups. Zinc deficiency impaired cerebellar development. The cerebellum was smaller and had fewer granule cells. The molecular layer was thinner and there was a persistence of the external granule cell layer. The normal cytoarchitecture of the cerebellar cortex was maintained in zinc deficient pups; however, basket, …

To date, most environmental reconstructions of lignite bearing formations in western North Dakota have been done on a formational scale. The objective of this study was to investigate one of the non-lignite intervals, the Kinneman Creek Interval, directly above the strati graphically lowest lignite in the Paleocene Sentinel Butte Formation. The Kinneman Creek Interval has been recognized in the Sentinel Butte Formation throughout most of western North Dakota.

The field area is located in west-central North Dakota in Mercer, Oliver, and McLean Counties and is bisected by the Missouri River. Excellent exposures are provided in the highwalls of Baukol-Noonan, North …

Transalveolar fiber development was studied in mandibles of albino mice, aged 12 days postnatal to adult. Light microscopic (LM), scanning electron microscopic (SEM), transmission electron microscopic (TEM), and high-voltage electron microscopic (HVEM) techniques were used. In LM, Wilder's reticular stain revealed transalveolar fibers in the crestal alveolar bone at day 14 and throughout the interdental septum at day 17. Van Gieson's method revealed transalveolar fibers in the crestal alveolar bone at day 19 and throughout the interdental septum at day 25. Differences in staining characteristics of developing transalveolar fibers were interpreted to be caused by persistence of surrounding glycosaminoglycans (GAG).In …

The administration of glucocorticoids has been shown to induce atrophy and weakness in whole skeletal muscle. These effects frequently appear to be more pronounced in pale muscle than in red muscle. The present study was undertaken to examine the effects of steroid treatment on the contractile, electrical, and fatigue properties of single meter units in pale and red cat hindlimb muscles. Single motor units in the medial gastrocnemius (MG) and soleus muscles were isolated using techniques developed by McPhedran, et al., (1965). Twenty-six undergraduate medical technology students at Virginia Commonwealth University were provided with a Hemestasis Study Guide to use during this unit and in preparing for an exam in this area. The study guide contained fifty objective-related questions in multiple-choice format. Answers were printed in latent image and included positive reinforcement for correct selections and remediation for incorrect ones. Thus the student received immediate feedback concerning his response to each question.

A self-administered thirteen page Hearing Loss Questionnaire (HLQ) was designed in order to systematically collect medical and family history data on deaf children and their families. Data were collected from over 400 families with one or more children enrolled in September 1979 at the Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD). Almost 70% of the parents provided pedigree and family history information by completing the detailed HLQ. Computer analyses of the collected data allowed a thorough examination of almost 200 medical and family history variables, providing useful reference data on the MSD probands. Complement is one of the major innate nonspecific mechanisms for host defense in serum. More than a dozen proteins have been isolated from serum which have a function in either the activation or regulation of complement action. Complement is similar to the coagulation sequence in that it comprises a number of precursor proenzymes in plasma that are sequentially cleaved to generate biologically and enzymatically active proteins.

The purpose of this study was to supplement the Dale word list with a list of terms that are familiar to most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and thus increase the precision of the Dale-Chall readability formula when it is applied to LDS materials. The Dale word list consists of 3,000 words that are familiar to 80 percent of fourth graders. The procedure involved identifying non-Dale words that occur frequently in LDS church publications and testing them on LDS fourth graders in a three-alternative multiple-choice format.
