This study describes the ultrastructure of the amphibian atrium and corroborates light microscopic evidence that atrial myocytes are stimulated to proliferate after ventricular wounding. In addition, the atrial response to a direct injury is described at light and electron microscopic levels.Normal atrial tissue from adult newts was processed for TEM. Fifteen days after ventricular wounding animals were injected with ('3)H-thymidine and atrial tissue was processed for TEM autoradiography. Direct atrial injury (DAI) was achieved by removal of a piece of the atrial wall. DAI animals received a ('3)H-thymidine injection at intervals of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 days after …

6 Cubicles is a three act drama that is best labeled a "tragicomedy." The plot revolves around the life of Hilda Stag, an elderly English professor whose obsessive behavior is best typified by her kleptomania and her mania for watching soap operas. Eventually Hilda's bad habits are chosen by her colleagues as the "sins" of the faculty office for which "atonement" must be made. Hilda thus becomes a scapegoat who is "sacrificed" by her officemates by means of a seemingly harmless prank. The Bakken Formation of North Dakota consists of upper and lower, black, organic-rich shales separated by a calcareous siltstone middle member. The formation is a relatively thin unit (maximum thickness of 145 feet) with the lower shale .attaining a maximum thickness of 50 feet and the upper shale a maximum thickness of 23 feet. The shales are hard, siliceous, pyritic, fissile, and noncalcareous. They contain abundant conodonts and tasmanites and have planar laminations accented by pyrite. The upper and lower shales were apparently deposited in an offshore, marine, anoxic environment where anoxic conditions may have been caused by silling of …

Studies of the effects of micromolar concentrations of a variety of di- and trivalent cations on glucokinase and hexokinase activities of rat liver found potent inhibition of both enzymes by Cu('+2) or Cr('+3). As determined by the Dixon and the Cornish-Bowden graphical methods of analysis for enzyme inhibition, Cr('+3) was a mixed inhibitor of glucokinase when either D-glucose or ATP and MgCl(,2) are the substrates varied and Cu('+2) was a competitive inhibitor of gluokinase when D-glucose is the substrate varied.The preference of glucose-6-phosphatase to catalyze glucose-6-P hydrolysis via the glucose-6-P phosphohydrolase reaction was compared to its synthesis via the phosphotransferase …

The interfacial electrochemistry of horse heart cytochrome c was studied at metal and metal oxide electrodes. Sperm whale myoglobin reactions at metal oxide and surface modified electrodes were also investigated. Emphasis was on the measurement and mechanistic interpretation of the heterogeneous electron transfer kinetic parameters for these electrode reactions.

The motivation for this study stems from the fact that some electron transfer proteins, e.g., cytochrome c, transfer electrons heterogeneously in physiological systems. Specific electrodes may, therefore, serve as suitable models for physiological surfaces. Electrode and membrane interfaces are both electrically charged and both have oriented hydration water layers.

There has been a growing interest in recent years in the study of person-environment interaction in the elderly. Several theoretical models have been proposed in the gerontological literature. Each of these models suffers from one or more limitations, including the restriction of requiring that the person and the environment be measured in the same terms, and the difficulty posed by attempting to empirically test the model.

Although the adaptive significance of daily and seasonal fattening of birds has been studied by many investigators (see Odum, 1965; King, 1972; Blem, 1976a), surprisingly little is known about the interactions of proximate and ultimate environmental factors regulating avian lipid levels. An exception is the study by Evans (1969). He found that lipid levels in Yellow Buntings (Emberiza citrinella) were more closely correlated with long-term temperature averages than with temperatures of the day of capture, or the days preceding or following capture. From 6 September 1976 to 3 July 1977 a total of 596 fish were collected from the Souris River and Devils Lake, North Dakota. These fish, representing six families and seven species, were examined for evidence of parasitism. Invertebrates and abiotic samples also were collected. Water analyses were completed following standard methods. Parasitic infections were confirmed in 87.3% of the total number examined. The Devils Lake collection included 96 fish from the summer season only, whereas those fish collected from the Souris River contained 20 of each dominant species for all seasons. Large numbers of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) winter in or migrate through middle and northern latitudes of the midcontinent region in North America. Although an intensively studied species, the wintering and staging ecology of mallards north of traditional areas has received limited attention, leaving waterfowl administrators with limited information for developing management guidelines for mallard populations during these periods of the year.

The treatability of aqueous gasifier effluent to reduce the content of soluble organics using solvent extraction as the principal treatment step was investigated. The aqueous gasifier effluent was collected from the spray washer of the Grand Forks Energy Technology Center's slagging fixed-bed gasifier during run RA176.

Raw gasifier effluent is treatable using solvent extraction with n-butyl acetate and isopropyl ether as solvents. A total capital investment of approximately $5,494,800 can be expected for a treatment facility using n-butyl acetate as the extracting solvent, capable of purifying wastewater from a slagging gasifier plant with a large enough capacity to produce 250 …

Four reclaimed mined areas in western North Dakota ranging in age from one to four years since mining, along with a site from a native mixed grass prairie for comparison, were studied to quantify the early successional changes in floristic composition, soil chemistry and plant chemical composition. The mined sites had been contoured, topsoiled, fertilized, and seeded. However, analysis of the seed bank in topsoil showed that the most dominant colonizers immigrate after topsoiling. Of the 95 species encountered, Kochia scoparia was the most dominant in the first two years following mining. Kochia had relatively low densities 2 in the …

Similarities between personality defects resulting from disruptive, inadequate affective development and problems of extreme extraversion and introversion suggested that developmental ego psychology and object relations theories might be useful in understanding interpersonal functioning in general and how people affiliate in particular. Research on affiliation indicated that extraverts are more affiliative and introverts less affillative, under a condition of high anxiety. A greater predisposition to become anxious (trait anxiety) was also associated with reduced affiliative tendencies under a high anxiety condition. The formation and stability of the azasulfonium functionality within the isothiazolidinium structure was investigated. A variety of S- and N-substituted aminothioethers, isothiazolidinium salts and sulfoxides were synthesized, isolated and characterized. Studies of the reaction of a variety of methionine derivatives and analogues with iodine indicated that cyclization occurred when a trimethylene bridge separated the amine and thioether functional groups. The amine could be primary or secondary but could not be in amide linkage and the sulfur could not exist as a sulfoxide or sulfonium salt, but only as a thioether. Significant yields of isothiazolidinium salts were obtained when N-halo compounds …
