Problem: The primary purposes of this study was to measure locus of control, psychoticism, extraversion, and neuroticism among alcoholic subjects who were at three different stages of recovery from alcoholism. A second purpose of this study included determining the relationship of race, sex, age, marriage status, and other identification factors to locus of control, psychoticis®, extraversion, and neuroticism in each of the three groups of recovering alcoholics. Atriplex oanescens, a facultatively evergreen dioecious shrub inhabiting cold and warm winter deserts of western United States, was studied at four sites in the Great Basin. The species was commonly a co-dominant in communities throughout its distribution, and was frequently found with other members of the Chenopodiaceae and members of Compositae. It was found to resprout vigorously and experiments indicated that seeds from all sites germinated easily in wetted, well 3 aerated soil. Recent research has consistently shown that life change, as measured by the Social Readjustment Rating Scale, is significantly correlated with the onset of physical and/or psychological problems. Despite their statistical significance these correlations account for very little variance. More recently it has been suggested that personality variables may mediate one's ability to cope with life change. In the present study the relationships between life change and the personality measures of Repression-Sensitization, Sensation-Seeking, Health Locus of Control, State-Trait Anxiety and self reported psychological discomfort (Lanyon's PSI Discomfort subscale) were investigated in a multiple regression analysis.

Data on the disabled in textbooks revealed that more disabled males than disabled females were visible. More adults including senior citizens were depicted as disabled characters. Sixty-seven percent of the disabilities were physical in origin. Nearly 70 percent of the disabled characters were Caucasian. Characterization and language were generally positive.

Analysis of flock characteristics indicated paired and unpaired gadwall remained partially segregated and that pairs were dominant over unpaired gadwall. Pairs were involved in less agonistic activity and remained at greater distances from other birds than unpaired gadwall. The major purpose of this study was to determine if participation in a life career planning course would significantly increase participants' self-esteem and career maturity and change participants' sex-role stereotypes, as measured by Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, the Texas Social Behavior Inventory, the Career Maturity Inventory, and the Personal Attributes Questionnaire. Another purpose of the study was to determine if self-esteem, as measured by the RSE, was positively related to a second self-esteem measure, career maturity, and sex-role stereotypes, as measured by scores on the TSBI, the CMI, and the PAQ, respectively. Arecoline and nicotine are two psychoactive cholinergic alkaloids. Arecoline is primarily a muscarinic agonist while nicotine, at low doses, is a nicotinic agonist. The experiments in this dissertation investigated two major areas: (1) the role of different factors in the development of tolerance to the behavioral effects of arecoline and nicotine, and (2) the possible mechanism and site of action of the discriminative stimulus (DS) effects of arecoline and nicotine.

The increase in rate of random migration (chemokinesis) of C. parvum activated macrophages in media conditioned by Lewis Lung (LL) carcinoma cells was attributed to a trypsin sensitive, heat stable, high molecular weight factor released from the membrane of the tumor cells.

A capillary tube assay was developed to expediently monitor the chemokinetic activity of macrophages incubated in whole and fractionated media. The capillary tube assay was found to be capable of detecting both chemokinetic and chemotactic (directional movement) factors present in the test media. Statistical analysis revealed the capillary tube assay provided reproducible data both within and between experiments. …

This study was undertaken in order to investigate the effect of different feedback variables on isometric strength performance. The variables studied were auditory EMG biofeedback, knowledge of results, and verbal cues.

Nineteen normal adult women volunteered as subjects for the study. Each subject performed nine isometric contractions of the triceps brachii muscle against the resistance of a cable tensiometer. One of three different types of feedback was given during each contraction in order to motivate subjects to generate as much force as possible. Sediment cores were taken from Main Bay and Creel Bay of Devils Lake (in 1975 and 1976) and East Devils Lake (in 1978), within the Devils Lake basin, and from Red Willow Lake (in 1979), a control lake outside of the Devils Lake basin, northeastern North Dakota. The cores were sampled, for the recovery of the ostracods, at 10-cm intervals. Fifteen species of ostracods were present in the studied cores: 8 candonids, 1 cyclocyprid, 3 cyprids, and 3 limnocytherids. Two distinct faunas are recognized. The Devils Lake-East Devils Lake fauna consists of Candona lactea, C. rawsoni, Cyprinotus glaucus, Potamocypris smaragdina, …

National studies have found significant proportions of adolescents who use a variety of chemicals frequently and heavily (Alibrandi 1978; Johnston, Bachman & O'Malley 1979). Hibernation in Richardson's ground squirrels, Spermophilus richardsonii richardsonii, was studied for three winters. Animals were maintained at 5(DEGREES) (+OR-) 2(DEGREES)C and continuous light (LL) during the first winter and at 5(DEGREES) (+OR-) 2(DEGREES)C and continuous darkness (DD) during the second and third winters. The typical ground squirrel hibernation pattern was observed throughout the study although the duration of the total and individual hibernation bouts was shorter than that reported in the field.Histological analyses of the gonads during hibernation indicated a greater amount of gonadotropic activity in male ground squirrels than in female ground squirrels. The rational structure of Crites' model was compared with a statistical structure derived from a hierarchical clustering of items from the Career Maturity Inventory.
