Children's knowledge of the physical realities of death was explored through the use of an objective answer death concepts questionnaire. A demographic questionnaire was used to identify religious influences and exposure to death-relevant experiences which could influence the acquisition of factual information about death.Knowledge of death was expected to be related to grade level, cognitive level, IQ level, religious influences and death-relevant experiences. Children's exposure to death-relevant experiences was expected to begin at an early age and increase with grade level and with cognitive level.One hundred and thirty-seven children in kindergarten, second, fourth, and sixth grades were individually administered the …

I studied the reproductive behavior and performance of a marked population of lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) near Erickson, Manitoba from 1977 to 1980. The dissertation is comprised of 3 parts: (1) influence of age and time on female reproductive performance, (2) forced copulation as a male reproductive strategy, and (3) parental time investment by brood hens.Arrival date and length of prelaying period varied among years, but were not related to female age. Rate of nonbreeding and nest initiation date varied among years and by female age. Age variation in nonbreeding was due to failure of yearlings and a few 2-year-olds …

Severe iron depletion has been associated with an increased susceptibility to infectious diseases. The purpose of this study was to assess phagocyte function and resistance to infection with Staphylococcus aureus during not only severe, but also moderate and marginal states of iron depletion.An experimental animal model of iron deficiency was developed in BALB/c mice. The amount of dietary iron supplementation was varied to attain different levels of iron deficiency. Tissue iron stores (liver, spleen, granulocyte), hemoglobins, and hematocrits correlated directly to the level of dietary iron supplementation. Most evidence to date clearly indicates that CB4 virus can affect the pancreas of both man and mice during acute infection. Yet, conflicting evidence exists relative to the consequence of the infection in both man and mice. The study described here attempted to provide definitive evidence on the relative role of the virus isolate (i.e. heterogenous virion populations vs. purified clones) in induction of prolonged diabetes-like disease in mice.

This descriptive study explored the congruency between the Prepared Childbirth couple's planned antenatal coaching support style and the observed coaching support style and the couple's postpartal perceptions of the coaching support style. Also explored were the relationship of coach's support style and the degree of the couple's postpartal satisfaction with the childbirth experience. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the predictive power of items regarding career appraisal in correctly classifying the status of burnout among Church Education System educators with six to ten years of service. Also, the factors considered most effective as deterrents to burnout were determined.

It was found that those who (1) did not feel they were progressing in their careers and (2) would change careers if possible were most likely to report burnout. This historical/descriptive study analyzes the speaking career of Belle S. Spafford and attempts to document the relationship between her speaking and her influence with her peers. For over fifty years, the dedicated woman served as a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the National Council of Women, briding the gap between the secular and religious world of women. This study was undertaken to relate individual differences along a Mahler-derived dimension of maternal distance-symbiosis to Ainsworth's patterns of infant-mother attachment and to assess cross-sectionally the normative appearance of Mahler's subphase of rapprochement (a restoring of close relations with the mother) in the middle of the second year of life. Sixty mother-toddler pairs, 20 each at the toddler ages of 12, 18, and 24 months evenly divided by sex, were observed in the Ainsworth and Wittig laboratory Strange Situation. The feasibility of treating slagging gasifier wastewater with bromine chloride was studied. The aqueous effluent was collected from the spray washer of the Grand Forks Energy Technology Center's slagging fixed-bed gasifier during run RA-94.

It was found that slagging gasifier wastewater is only partially treatable using bromine chloride as the principal treatment step. After a pretreatment scheme consisting of lime addition and ammonia stripping, bromine chloride was unable to reduce the total carbon concentration of the wastewater to acceptable discharge or reuse levels.

Radio biotelemetry was used to study the movements and behavior of walleyes in Jamestown Reservoir during the summer of 1980. Four walleyes weighing from 1.7 to 4.4 kg were surgically implanted with radio transmitters. Only one fish could be successfully tracked. It was found that conductivity prevented the reception of radio signals from water deeper than 4.5 m. In 1981, eight walleyes were surgically implanted with ultrasonic transmitters. The ultrasonic transmitters performed as expected. Seven walleyes were successfully tracked throughout the summer. Two of the walleyes appeared to be nomadic and did not form activity areas. Five walleyes formed activity …

The clinically relevant interaction between quinidine and digoxin was investigated using unanesthetized and unrestrained guinea pigs for in vivo pharmacokinetic and tissue disposition as well as in vitro [’H]-digoxin binding studies using brain region preparations from dog, guinea pig and rat. Quinidine (3 mg/kg) caused significant elevation of plasma levels of digoxin as early as 5 minutes post-injection and the increase persisted for at least 8 hours. Significant decrease (20%) in the volume of distribution of digoxin was observed in quinidine treated animals. The decreased volume of distribution appeared to be due to displacement of digoxin from tissue stores by …

Potter (1975, 1976) has shown that visual masks can exert effects both at the level of the icon and at higher levels of processing. Her methodology involved presenting pictures in a sequence at very fast rates, in order to mimic naturalistic saccadic viewing. The present study used similar methodology in order to investigate whether a picture which violates an expectation about pictures in that series exerts more of a masking effect than a picture which coincides with the expectation.

Sixty male albino rats received DDAVP, a placebo, or control treatment and were tested on a brightness discrimination task. Three groups (DDAVP, placebo, and control) were tested in the morning and three groups were tested in the evening for possible diurnal influences of DDAVP. The acquisition and reversal of the brightness discrimination, along with the retention of the reversal problem after a five- day retention interval were analyzed. Inspection of forward and backward learning curves plotted for each task revealed facilitated acquisition along with an initial impairment of reversal learning in those animals treated with DDAVP. The first section of this dissertation deals with the development of a procedure for the determination of total arsenic in biological samples. Arsine generated from arsenic in dry combusted biological samples was measured by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with a graphite furnace. Innovations of the method included the introduction of arsine into the interior of the graphite tube via one internal purge gas port only, the use of three traps to remove water from generated arsine, and the use of Erlenmeyer flasks in the generation of arsine. The lamins are a group of proteins in a residual nuclear envelope fraction derived from the nuclear lamina. The absence of specific functional assays for the two predominant species, lamin A and lamin B, has complicated their biochemical characterization. Initial studies reported in this work involved the enzymic cleavage of isolated lamins A and B and another lamina protein with a molecular weight of 61,000-daltons. The results obtained with each of three enzymes indicated strong similarities between the three nuclear envelope proteins.

This study focuses on the role of soluble spinach ferredoxin (Fd) in photosynthesis where it functions as an electron carrier to membrane bound species in the plant chloroplast. The effect of pulsed electric fields on cell membranes were studied to investigate the effects of an electric field, per se, on biological systems, without the densometric and other technical problems associated with other forms of nonionizing radiation. Exposure of mouse splenocytes to a high voltage pulse resulted in an increase in membrane permeability to K⁺ that was dependent on both the electric field strength and the pulse duration. Exposure to a 2 μsec, 3.0 kV/cm pulse elicited a 50% loss of intracellular K⁺ indicating that the critical transmembrane potential (V_m) at breakdown was 1.26 volts …

In this study, the relationships between certain developmental factors and the degree of certainty expressed by college students about their decision to major in a field of study were explored.
