The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between specific oral contraceptive use and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and to determine if duration of use and content of oral contraceptives were related to CIN. The hypotheses tested in this study were: (1) norgestrel-containing oral contraceptives are associated with more severe levels of CIN, and (2) longer duration of oral contraceptive use is associated with more severe CIN.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of selected physical socio-environmental variables on total percent body fat. The sample population consisted of single, LDS, white women attending Brigham Young University (BYU) and California State University at Fullerton (CSUF). Significant data as well as trends that appeared were included in this paper.

From the data collected, it was concluded that the sample populations at BYU and CSUF were the same. The incidence of obesity was determined only among individuals attending both universities. The entire sample population mean was 22.19 percent. This percentage did not meet the obesity criteria. …

The influences of sex and personality on attentional style were examined in two neuropsychological studies in which perfor mance and event-related potentials (ERP's) were employed. Pribram and McGuinness1 (1975) conceptions of Activation and Arousal were recast in a lateralized framework in which the former was seen as characteristic of left hemisphere function while the latter was identified more closely with the right hemisphere. Four equal groups of nine subjects were selected on the basis of sex and ex treme extraversion scores (I-E), while controlling for neuroticism, to participate in two lateralized attentional tasks. Five currently used flagella stains and staining procedures have been studied and evaluated. A staining method that is simplest, most reliable, and highly reproducible, especially for beginning students and technicians has been assembled and recommended.

Four important variables necessary for successful flagella staining were stressed. These variables are: growth of organisms, smear pre paration, staining procedure, and reagent stability.

Two important procedures which are part of some, but not all of the flagella staining methods studied are strongly recommended. One is the practice of enclosing a smear with wax pencil and adding a known, constant volume of dye. An effective …

This research investigated the ability to comprehend and express affect by non-verbal means. Darwin (1872) suggested that the non-verbal communication of emotion had a biological basis. Hughlings-Jackson (1879) emphasized the relationship between cerebral functioning and the ability to communicate affect. Neuropsychological research suggests that a major neuronal network located in the right hemisphere supports non-verbal communication. The evidence indicates the localization of expressive skills in the anterior cortex and comprehensive skills in the posterior cortex.

The breeding biology and productivity of the Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena) were studied in Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, Manitoba, during 1980 and 1981. Arrival dates ranged from mid-April to early June. Pre-nesting intervals ranged from 11 o 42 days and averaged about 20 days. Egg-laying commenced in early May and extended until mid-July. The average clutch size (4.95 eggs) was much larger than those found in other studies of the Red-necked Grebe in North America.

Although the nest success rate was low (26.2%), most failed pairs (83.5%) initiated at least 1 replacement clutch, and more than one-half of the observed …

Various aspects of the ecology and biology of the walleye were examined from three discrete areas of Lake Sakakawea during the summer of 1982. Spatial distribution, predator-prey relationships and species association data were procured by simultaneously placing experimental and 0.5 in mesh gill nets at three depth ranges: 0-10 ft, 11-20 ft and 21-40 ft. Temporal distribution data were collected by lifting and resetting the gill nets approximately every six hours. Four time periods were used: 0600-1200 h, 1200-1800 h, 1800-2400 h and 2400-0600 h. Walleye age, growth and food habit data were also collected from the fish caught.

The left and right hemispheres have unique modes of processing data: the former verbal-analytic, the latter spatial-holistic. Dominant direction of lateral eye movement on answering reflective questions has been interpreted as indicating differential contralateral hemispheric activation and, by inference, predominant reliance on one or the other mode.

This study tested the hypothesis that neurological organization of the brain underlies and unifies individual perceptual, cognitive, and personality style differences. The present investigation addresses the hypothesis of phonetic symbolism in human speech. As a psycholinguistic and epistemological concept, the phonetic symbol is understood to be a structural a priori in sound which correlates with the semantic properties of physiognomic, muscular tension. An extension of this hypothesis is the assumption that phonemes without conventional meaning in a language can approximate semantic equivalence of ordinary words under appropriate experimental conditions.

In the present study, we have examined the differences among Corynebacterium parvum-activated, thioglycollate-elicited, and resident macrophages from (C57BL/6 X C3H)F1 mice utilizing two microcytotoxicity assays. Macrophage and Naegleria fowleri were interchangeably employed as effector and target cells. To assess the ability of the macrophage to lyse N. fowleri, the amoebae were labeled with 5 μCi of 3H-uridine per 5 x 10^5 cells for 18 h prior to co-culturing with adherent macrophage monolayers. Although the macrophage-induced lysis was density and time dependent, C. parvum macrophages consistently demonstrated an increased cytotoxic response to N. fowleri after 24 h co-incubation at a 10:1 …

During the past few decades, analogs of purine nucleosides have been described that are modified either in the heterocyclic base, sugar moiety or both, and many of these modified nucleosides display antiviral and/or antineoplastic activity. The Class II mesoionic purinones are isosteric with their non~mesoionic purinone counterparts. It is conceivable that the mesoionic purinone nucleosides might constitute an entirely novel class of modified nucleosides with potential chemotherapeutic activity. This study investigated the relationship between the sex role self concept of female nursing administrators and the role conflict they experienced. The correlation of age. education and experience with sex role self concept and role conflict was examined. This was a descriptive survey with a purposive probability sample of 126 subjects from three mid-Atlantic states. A mail survey resulted in a useful return of 88 questionnaires, including 81 females.

The use of stabilization ponds to dispose of municipal wastes has become popular with many North Dakota cities. When managed properly they are an efficient and economical method of waste disposal and may not adversely affect groundwater quality. In order to achieve efficient treatment, the ponds must be built in sediment that has permeability low enough to inhibit excessive percolation of wastewater into the subsurface. Some North Dakota cities have not met this basic requirement in the construction of their ponds. A total of 21 various 5-aryl-2H-tetrazoles, 5-aryl-2H-tetrazole-2-acetic acids, and (4-phenyl-5-aryl-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-yl)thioacetic acids were synthesized and tested as possible antiinflammatory agents. The aryl substituent consisted of a substituted phenyl group with the following substitution: H, 4-OMe, 3,4-diOMe, 3,4,5-tri-OMe, 4-OH, 3,4,-di-OH, or 3,4,5-tri-OH. All compounds and intermediates were characterized on the basis of their infrared and proton magnetic resonance spectral data. Low Molecular Weight Ligands And Trace Element Transport: A Study Employing Modified Gel Chromatography (Milk, Infant Formulas, Zinc)., Mark Thomas Martin

The purpose of this study was to detect and identify low molecular weight (<10,000 Da) copper and zinc binding ligands in biological materials believed to function in trace element transport using modified gel chromatography (MGC) as the major detective method. MCG involves the gel filtration of a biological specimen on a column equilibrated with a chosen metal ion. In this way, the ligands can be separated from each other without being separated from the investigative metal ion. The ligands were separated by molecular weight on the gel matrix and the column eluent was monitored for metal binding peaks by the use of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Several ligands could be detected in a single sample and the detection limit was 0.1 (mu)mol for some common ligands.Milks and infant formulas were examined for the human species-specific zinc binding ligand thought to be essential to the acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) infant. Citrate was detected in all milks but picolinate was not detectable in any. Formula, human, and goat milk also contained detectable free amino acids. Human and bovine milk proteins also bound metal. No human species-specific ligands were detected. Alternative causes of the diet-dependent AE zinc deficiency and a mechanism for the molecular origin of AE are suggested.Viokase, a porcine pancreatic extract, has been found to be effective in the treatment of variant AE, an effect reportedly due to the presence of citrate or picolinate. Neither ligand was detectable by MGC although amino acid ligands were highly concentrated. Given the competitive nature of trace metal-ligand binding, some other aspect of Viokase probably ameliorates the variant AE symptoms.Ligands were detected in porcine intestinal mucosa. However, their potential as transport ligands depends on future studies to determine if the ligands were artefacts of sample preparation.Conjugated bilirubin, peptides, and amino acids were identified as ligands in human bile and are probably also present in porcine bile. The peptides were not individually identified but possibly play specific roles in normal copper excretion.

The present study was undertaken to determine whether an over-emphasis on whole vs. large detail locations on the Rorschach Inkblot Test, as assessed by the W/D ratio, would be manifested in individual differences in information processing style. It was hypothesized that subjects with W/D ratios weighted in the whole direction would perform better on visual information processing tasks which require global analysis of the stimulus configuration and which ostensibly are mediated to a greater degree by the right hemisphere.
