Regulation Of The Solubility Of Zinc In Milk (Calcium-Phosphate, Co-Precipitation, Iron)., Lowell S. Nelson Jr.

Humans absorb zinc, iron and copper more readily from human milk than from bovine milk or infant formulae. Given that solubility is requisite to absorption, the solubilities of select components, including zinc, were examined in preparations of bovine and human milk and in model solutions based on the low-molecular-weight components of the two milks. Solubility was examined over a pH range similar to that found in the human digestive system. Factors which could alter zinc solubility were examined by changing the composition of the model solutions and by fortifying milks with various compounds.Each aliquot of the models or milks was …

Part I. The bioavailability of calcium, magnesium, and zinc is greater from human milk than bovine milk, even though individual concentration magnitudes are reversed. Reasons for this are investigated by studying the complexation and precipitation reactions of these minerals and the low molecular weight ligands present in both milks at pHs ranging from two to eight. These reactions control the solubility of these minerals and we assume that for a mineral to be bioavailable it must be in solution and arrive at the appropriate intestinal segment for absorption. This study was designed to study the effects of status configuration and style of counseling on Korean perspectives of counseling. Status configuration and counseling style, each with two levels, were the two independent variables manipulated in this study. Two written scripts, determined by judges to represent directive and reflective counseling styles, and two counselor-client status configurations (congruent versus incongruent) served as the stimuli. Congruent status existed where the therapist was older than the client, incongruency existed when the client was the elder.Subjects (n = 60) were randomly assigned to four treatment groups. The goal of this study was the determination of a similar depositional sequence for sediments from a number of shallow basins in southwestern North Dakota and the comparison of this sequence with other work either in the area or in similar geographic environments.

Samples were obtained by augering, coring, and trenching selected basins. They were analyzed by means of: core description; detailed texture analyses on selected cores by sieve, pipette, and SediGraph techniques; and mineralogy by x-ray diffraction. Computer analyses were used to characterize grain-size distributions and to correlate texture and mineralogy by cross-association.

The purpose of this study was to purify rabbit hepatic mitochondrial phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) and characterize certain physical properties of the purified cytoplasmic and mitochondrial forms of PEPCK in rabbit liver.Purification to >95 percent homogeneity of rabbit hepatic mitochondrial PEPCK was accomplished with the use of QAE Sephadex chromatography followed by Bio-Gel HTP (hydroxyapatite) chromatography and Reactive Blue 2-Agarose chromatography as the final step. A 134-fold purification of the enzyme was achieved with an overall yield of 14 percent and a final specific activity of 13.6 (mu)moles/min/mg protein. Spectroelectrochemical and electrochemical methods have been used to investigate the characteristics of heterogeneous electron transfer between cytochrome c and indium oxide electrodes. Direct electron transfer between cytochrome c and solid electrodes is of interest due to the interfacial character of electron transfer between the protein and its membrane-bound physiological redox partners. The conformation of ferricytochrome c is affected more by changes in temperature or pH than is its reduced form, ferrocytochrome c. This difference in conformational stability is attributed to the +1 charge of the heme in ferricytochrome c that is largely embedded in the hydrophobic interior of the enzyme. …

PN200-110 is an analogue of the 1,4-dihydropyridine class of calcium antagonists, which have previously been shown to be efficacious in lowering blood pressure in essential hypertension. In our study, PN200-110 was found to be effective in lowering systolic blood pressures both acutely, in normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats, and chronically in the hypertensive group. Heart rates were increased above pretreatment values following PN200-110 therapy, but these changes were statistically insignificant.The in vitro binding of (+)- methyl-('3)H PN200-110 to synaptosomal P(,2) membranes was found to be saturable, specific, reversible, temperature-dependent, and of high affinity to a single set of dihydropyridine receptor …

In order to prepare more effective inhibitors of ribonucleotide reductase a series of 4-substituted and 4,5-disubstituted catechols were synthesized and tested. The derivatives synthesized were also examined for their antitumor activity against L1210 leukemia in mice. A free radical scavenging assay was performed to establish what electronic parameters may govern in vitro and/or in vivo activity. The molecular features of the most potent compounds were compared to the features of the natural substrate of reduction, CDP, UDP, GDP and ADP.

The study was undertaken to determine the incidence of auscultatory gaps in hospitalized adults and to determine whether a relationship existed between the presence of a gap and the patient's age, sex, race, or medical diagnosis. Blood pressures were taken bilaterally on 120 randomly selected hospitalized adults using the technique recommended by the American Heart Association. None of the subjects in the sample had an auscultatory gap present.

Purified human C3a was iodinated (¹²⁵I-C3a) and used to study the interaction of labeled peptide with rat peritoneal mast cells (RMC). Cellular binding of ¹²⁵I-C3a occurred within 30 sec, followed by a rapid dissociation from the cell. Both the binding of ¹²⁵I-C3a and the rate of dissociation from the cell were temperature dependent. At 0°C, the binding of ¹²⁵I-C3a was increased and the rate of dissociation reduced, as compared to 37°C. Once ¹²⁵I-C3a was exposed to RMC, it lost the ability to rebind to a second batch of RMC. The Sherwood "bed" and the overlying Bluell "bed" are two log-defined zones at the top of the Frobisher-Alida interval. The Frobisher-Alida interval, within either the Mission Canyon carbonates or the overlying Charles evaporites, is composed of a number (up to six) of log-defined zones. On the northeast flank of the Williston Basin the zones are separated by even, lithologically homogeneous argillaceous marker beds. Basinward, these marker beds terminate into less argillaceous carbonates.

The Upper Cretaceous Niobrara Formation in eastern North Dakota consists of calcareous shales, chalks, and shaly chalks. The formation was studied from surface exposures, cores, and well logs. The Niobrara is 62 feet (19m) to 272 feet (83 m) and is thickest to the northeast, in a central linear area, and to the southwest. In a northern area, it was divided into a lower, calcareous shale member, and an upper, chalky member. In a.southern area, five stratigraphic units were recognized, in ascending order: a lower shaly chalk, a shale, a middle shaly chalk, a chalk, and an upper shaly chalk. …

This thesis applies Kenneth Burke's method of logology as exemplified in The Rhetoric of Religion to analyze the Mormon text Doctrine and Covenants Section 88. This method of logology is based on the assumption that what is said about God in theology reveals a religion's use of language to influence human motives. The logological method uses six analogies to discover the motives implicit in religious terminologies. These six analogies are as follows: words-Word, Matter-Spirit, the Negative, the Titular, Time-Eternity, and the Formal.

Based upon an exegesis of relevant Christian scripture, a theory of Christian development was produced. This theory posits eight stages of development moving broadly from faith, through self-discipline, to Christian love. Descriptive characterizations are provided for each of the stages, along with a psychodynamic structure to explain the process of movement from one stage to the next. This theory was compared and contrasted with the theories of Erikson, Kohl- berg, Gleason, and Fowler. Strong parallels were noted between the proposed theory of Christian development and Erikson' s theory of psycho-social development. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the development of the otic placode/vesicle and the concurrent synthesis of an associated cell surface coat material (SCM) in the chick embryo. This was accomplished by means of precipitation of the glycoconjugate constituents of the SCM with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and subsequent observation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cryofixation and freeze-substitution were utilized to validate the results of CPC precipitation. In addition, specific sugar moieties present within the SCM were characterized, in part, using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-conjugated lectins.
