A study of the binding of copper(II)-amine complexes to polyacrylic acid was undertaken. Experimental binding curves were generated for polyacrylic acid having molecular weights of 11,050 and 1600 at an ionic strength of.5M and also at an ionic strength of.1M for the 11,050 molecular weight sample. An analysis of the experimental data indicates that the coordinating species is copper(II)-triamine. The formation curves were fit to analytical binding models and it was found that the higher molecular weight polyions exhibit cooperative behavior. Intrasexual competition among males is a dominant feature of the mating system of most animals. Far fewer species exhibit female-female competition for mates. However, species showing reversal of the typical sex roles afford special opportunities to evaluate evolutionary generalities concerning sexual selection and mating systems.I studied Wilson's phalarope (Phalaropus tricolor), a sex-role reversed, nonterritorial shorebird, from 1982-1986 at Last Mountain Lake Wildlife Management Unit in southcentral Saskatchewan, Canada. The intention of the researcher was to discover the level of critical thinking skills of undergraduate teacher education students attending the University of North Dakota (UND) during the spring semester of 1987. The Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (CTA) was used to identify the level of critical thinking of the participants. A demographic data sheet was prepared by the researcher from which general data were gathered for the study.Data were analyzed by analyses of variance, multiple comparisons of means, and a simple t-test. In the Williston Basin, the Winnipegosis Formation is the major carbonate unit of the initial transgressive-regressive pulse of the Kaskaskia sequence. Twenty-two lithofacies were identified by well-log, core, and thin-section studies of Winnipegosis rocks; these belong to seven environments of deposition which include deep basin, deep shelf, shallow shelf, reef, lagoon, tidal flat, and evaporite basin. The deposition of the Winnipegosis and Prairie Formations were inter-related and occurred during six episodes. Following a brief hiatus separating the underlying Ashern Formation from the Winnipegosis, a clear, quiet, shallow-marine environment became established in the North Dakota portion of the Elk Point Basin. …

Histamine is known to cause an H$\sb 1$-receptor mediated vasoconstriction and an H$\sb2$-receptor mediated vasodilation in the coronary vasculature of the rabbit heart. In this study we looked at the role that the adenyl cyclase-cyclic AMP system plays in mediation of the histamine response in the vascular smooth muscle. Change in perfusion pressure in the isolated rabbit heart was used as the index of change in vascular tone when histamine was added to the perfusate. In order to facilitate the transport of a nucleotide across an artificial lipid bilayer, different amines were conjugated to the phosphate group of adenosine 5$\sp\prime$-phosphate. The effect of the amine conjugation was to enhance the lipophilicity of the consequent adenosine 5$\sp\prime$-phosphoramidate derivative.The synthesis of various nucleoside 5$\sp\prime$-phosphoramidate analogs have been investigated, using different methodologies. Adenosine 5$\sp\prime$-phosphoromorpholidate, 5$\sp\prime$-phosphor(adamantyl)amidate, (n-decyl)amidate, (n-stearyl)amidate, and (1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxo-16-azacyclooctadecyl)amidate were synthesized by adopting Moffatt and Khorana's procedures. Among these phosphoramidate analogs, the adamantyl, aza-18-crown-6, and stearyl derivates have never been reported before. An original HPLC assay was developed for pyrimethamine (PYR) in plasma, RBCs, and buffer for the purpose of studying its plasma protein binding and RBC partitioning.

Equilibrium dialysis (ED) was used to study protein binding. Isotonic phosphate buffer used in ED did not prevent small volume shifts. The pH of the plasma affected the protein binding of PYR although it was not significant for the comparison of binding at pH 7.4 vs. 8.0. PYR at 1000 ng/ml averaged 93.1% bound to plasma proteins. Binding to pure human albumin was 86.5% at lower levels of albumin and PYR (350 ng/ml). There …

Past research has suggested that temporary perturbations characterize parent-adolescent relations after the onset of pubertal change. The purpose of this study was to further delineate the characteristics of these disruptions in families with seventh-grade girls. Current operational definitions of family conflict in an observational context are inadequate and a potentially more useful definition was offered: conflict is believed to exist when there is the simultaneous occurrence of opposing interpersonal forces.

This study was designed to examine the effects of hypnotherapy on both short-term and long-term weight loss when combined with a group behavioral weight loss program. At the beginning of the study, 38 obese female subjects (20% over normal body weight), ranging in age from 21 to 64, were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups, one utilizing behavior therapy only and the other utilizing behavior therapy plus hypnotherapy.

The groups mot weekly for 1-1/2 hours for 8 consecutive weeks, with follow-up sessions, at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Twenty-eight women completed the study. The first hour in …

Once considered a simple solution for weight loss, dieting has more recently been seen as playing a causal role in the development of eating disorders. Early behaviors of juvenile offenders and nonoffenders were studied to assess differences between the two groups. Experimental subjects were 50 youth residing in three northeastern counties of North Dakota who had committed two or more offenses. Control subjects were 50 non-offenders matched for birthdate, sex, and school. Data were collected retrospectively from both groups on Form 1 of the Louisville Behavior Checklist (LBC)» an inventory designed to detect psychopathological behaviors among preschool children. The purpose of this study was to assess daily hassles and uplifts in women employed full time, part time, and not employed. From three pools of 100 names in each employment category, 90 subjects were randomly selected. Questionnaires related to daily hassles and uplifts and perceived stress and health were mailed to subjects and 83% of the questionnaires were returned. The resultant sample of 74 subjects was comprised of 24 full-time, 25 part-time, and 25 nonemployed women.

The means for hassles frequency, 21.52 (SD = 13.20), and intensity, 1.44 ( SD = 0.32), indicated that subjects' hassles were low and …

The Problem: This study was designed to develop profiles of Minnesota teachers who did and did not engage in supplementary income activities, profiles of teachers engaged in one, two, or three or more supplementary income activities, and to compare the differences. The study also investigated the perceived need to engage in supplementary income activities, the perceived reasons for being engaged in supplementary income activities, and the perceived impact of being engaged in supplementary income activities.

Two of the major effects of histamine in the rabbit heart are the enhancement of contractility and microvascular permeability. In cardiac muscle it has been documented that calcium (Ca ) bound to the sarcolem- mal-glycocalyx complex is essential for the regulation of the contractile response. In addition, it has been postulated that histamine's regulation of microvascular permeability may occur via an endothelial contractile response causing the formation of submicroscopic gaps between endothelial cells. The role of the central nervous system neurotransmitter serotonin was evaluated on the anticonvulsant activity of various compounds. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) is known to have an inhibitory role in central nervous system activity. A facilitation of the anticonvulsant activity of benzodiazepines has previously been attributed to increased serotonin activity.Male white mice of the ICR strain were administered varying doses of phenytoin, 5-ethyl, 5-methylhydantoin (EMH) and JAW-669, then challenged with maximal electroshock. Effects Of Zinc Deficiency On Sertoli Cell Number And Ultrastructure: An In Vivo And In Vitro Study., Gro Thorne-Tjomsland

Hypogonadism in the male is a well known clinical symptom of zinc deficiency. The testicular lesions have been primarily attributed to the effects of decreased zinc on germ cells. This study assessed possible effects of zinc deficiency on Sertoli cell number and ultrastructure.Long-Evans dams and their newborn litters were placed on zinc deficient (ZD), pair-fed or ad libitum fed (AL) diets. All dams received a 20% egg white based diet containing less than one ppm zinc. ZD dams received distilled, deionized water (<1 ppm ZN), while PF and AL dams received the above water fortified with 25 ppm zinc. Male pups were sacrificed day 10 and their testes were processed for light (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).LM cell counts were performed on one (mu)m sections. Average number of germ cells on the basement membrane (BM) (=GC2) per tubular cross-section was reducted by two-thirds in ZD and PF compared to AL animals (p < 0.0001). Average number of germ cells not on the BM (=GC1) and average number of Sertoli cells per tubular cross-section were not statistically different in the three diet groups.Volume fractions of TEM subcompartments/total cytoplasm were determined by morphometric methods. The lysosome-like fraction was doubled in ZD and PF compared to AL animals (p < 0.05). Endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi and mitochondrial fractions were not statistically different in the three diet groups.Five day old Sertoli cell cultures derived from ZD, PF and AL pups were volumetrically analyzed as in vivo. The endoplasmic reticulum fraction was approximately 100% lower in ZD- than in AL-derived cultures (p < 0.01). Golgi, mitochondrial, dense body and inclusion body fractions were similar in ZD-, PF- and AL-derived cultures.These data suggest that Sertoli cells, although not significantly reduced in number in ZD and PF animals, were affected ultrastructurally by dietary treatment. The volumetric increase in lysosome-like bodies in vivo suggested that Sertoli cells participate in phagocytosis of germ cells degenerating as a result of dietary treatment. The decreased ER volume fraction of ZD-derived tissue cultured Sertoli cells suggested that Sertoli cell secretory potential may be altered as a result of zinc deficiency.

Ceratophyllus idius is an ectoparasite of purple martins (Progne subis) and commonly inhabits the nest material of these birds. In the Upper Midwest, purple martins migrate in late August and return in mid- or late April. Despite the host's absence and harsh northern winters, a portion of the adult flea population survives to reinfest returning birds. The cytoplasmic and mitochondrial isozymes of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) catalyze the reversible decarboxylation and phosphorylation of OAA to PEP with GTP or ITP serving as the phosphoryl donor. The forward reaction is an essential component of the gluconeogenic pathway. The purpose of this research was to compare the effects of metal activation on the forward (decarboxylating) and reverse (carboxylating) reactions of the PEPCK isozmes purified from rabbit liver.A purification procedure for rabbit cytoplasmic PEPCK was developed. The final enzyme preparation was homogeneous as established by SDS-PAGE. Pure cytoplasmic PEPCK and pure mitochondrial PEPCK from rabbit liver exhibit identical electrophoretic behavior …
