Brood Parasitism And Reproduction Of Canvasbacks And Redheads On The Delta Marsh, Rodney D. Sayler

I studied brood parasitism and breeding ecology of canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria) and redheads (A. americana) nesting on the Delta Marsh near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, from 1977 to 1980. The dissertation focuses on 3 aspects of this investigation: 1) the role of prairie drought in influencing pochard reproductive performance, including a comprehensive review of hypotheses explaining evolution of brood parasitism in waterfowl (Anatidae), 2) behavioral ecology and evolution of host/parasite interactions, and 3) development of improved redhead aging techniques by using cluster analysis.

Conceptual level, hypothesis formation training, college grade point average, counselor preparation level, and age were studied to assess their relationship to clinical judgment. The sample consisted of female volunteer social work students, who were divided into training (26 subjects) and control (14 subjects) groups. The training group received hypothesis formation training, and the control group simply observed a counseling session. The subjects responded to the Paragraph Completion Method (Hunt, Butler, Noy & Rosser, 1978) and the Modified Clinical Assessment Questionnaire.

The purpose of this research was twofold. First, determine (1) the existence of multiple antibiotic resistant coliforms (MAR) in the sewage system of Grand Forks, (2) relative numbers of origin, (3) seasonal variation, (4) elimination by the sewage treatment system and, (5) rates of MAR transfer to a receiver organism. The second phase was to determine if MAR could be transferred into a methyl parathion degrading Flavobacterium aquatile (F. aquatile) and test its suitability as a genetic marker, and determine if this organism could survive in primary lagoon sewage (PLS) in competition with indigenous microorganisms.Grab samples of sewage were collected …

The primary objective of the research was to investigate the pharmacodynamics of digoxin in dogs. Initially an assay specific for digoxin in the presence of its major metabolites, viz., digoxigenin, digoxigenin mono-digitoxoside, digoxigenin bis-digitoxoside and dihydrodigoxin was developed using HPLC-RIA. Methodology for non-invasive measurement of left ventricular ejection time (LVET) and other systolic time intervals (STI) in beagle dogs were developed. This involved surgery for exteriorization of the carotid artery in the dogs and subsequent measurements of LVET and STI after recovery. The genetics and development of 5 embryo-lethal maize mutants defective in early embryogenesis were studied by genetic, histological, ultrastructural, and tissue culture techniques. The mutants examined were cp*-E1113A (dek22) on 1L, dcr*-E1428 (dek23) on 2L, rgh*-E1210, fl*-E1253B, and cp*-E1399A. They were found to be non-allelic. Long term studies of chromosome arm location by the Twaxy translocation stocks and mapping of cp*-E1113A and dcr*-E1428 with multiple linkage marker stocks were initiated. Three mutants lacked leaf primordia at kernel maturity, while two made leaf primordia but were unable to germinate. Embryos of cp*-E1113A became blocked at the transition stage but remained morphologically …

A history was written about all federal legislation funding school science laboratory equipment and about the administration of funds from that legislation allocated to the North Dakota state education agency, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Copper and manganese complexes of bridged ethylene derivatives of twenty physiological amino acids were synthesized, and tested for their ability to quench superoxide and antiinflammatory activity for use as drugs for rheumatoid arthritis. The synthesis was accomplished by nucleophilic substitution of ethylene dibromide by the amino group of the amino acids. The derivatized amino acid complexes of copper that showed the greatest activity were leucine, alanine, serine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, tyrosine, arginine and glutamine. Valine, isoleucine and threonine ethylene copper complexes showed low reactivity. The glycine complex is unreactive. The manganese complexes showed reactivity at a concentration of a factor of …

The primary purpose of this study was to construct four relatively independent subscales measuring psychological correlates of brain laterality, namely, control-spontaneity, anxiety, analytic-impressionistic cognition, and verbal-nonverbal cognition. The selected trait dimensions, and the items to tap them, were derived largely from Tucker's (1981) and Tucker and Williamson's (1984) discussions of asymmetric cognitive-attentional and affective processes and from Shapiro's (1965) clinical formulation of obsessive and hysteric personality styles.A Deductive-Inductive (Burisch, 1978, 1984) test construction strategy was used, involving both rational and statistical procedures. Cattle and laboratory animals develop resistance to infestation with ixodid ticks following a sensitizing exposure. Antigenic substances introduced during feeding stimulate immune effector mechanisms that include antibody, cell-mediated immunity, complement, and other soluble mediators. Resistance is expressed by immunopathological modulation of normal tick feeding and development processes.Acquired resistance and immune responsiveness of ixodid infested Bos taurus and Bos indicus cattle has been investigated. Ixodid salivary gland antigen (SGA) specific, and cross-reactive, IgG response curves were determined by dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Dot-ELISA). Immunoglobulin titer did not necessarily correlate directly with levels of resistance, indicating the importance of other immune defense …

A diverse Coleoptera fauna of 462 species in 48 families was collected from 41 locations in the Parque Nacional de Puyehue and adjacent parts of the Lake Region of southern Chile. The sample locations ranged from rain forest habitats at sea-level to Andean tundra habitats at 1500 m msl. Cluster analysis of a Dice similarity coefficient matrix revealed a broad pattern of bioassociations within the large data base, Boundaries between the bioassociations correspond largely with those of the major vegetation zones implying that the distribution of the fauna is strongly influenced by the distribution of plants. The Beulah-Zap lignite bed is one of several economically important lignites in the Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene). This lignite occurs as a subsurface unit in the Knife River Basin of Mercer and I Oliver counties of North Dakota. The Beulah-Zap lignite is a heterogeneous carbonaceous rock unit composed of megascopic and microscopic I components, which are lithotypes and macerals, respectively. Relationships between the maceral contents of the lithotypes follow patterns similar to those of bituminous coals. The synthesis, characterization, and chemical properties of Mo(VI)o₂(5-X-SSP) and Mo(VI)o₂(5-X-SSE), (5-X- SSP²- = 2-((5-X-salicylidene)amino)benzenethiolate; 5-X- SSE^2- = 2-((5-X-salicylidene)amino)ethanethiolate; X = Br, Cl, H, CH₃O), which contain tridentate (ONS) Schiff base ligands is described. The chemical properties of these molybdenum complexes are compared with those which possess tridentate (ONO) Schiff base ligands. Cyclic voltammetry was used to obtain cathodic reduction potentials (E_PC) for the quasi-reversible reduction of the cis-dioxomolybdenum (VI) complexes. In order to characterize the environmental and ionic nature of the active site of chymotrypsin (Chy), a number of derivatives were prepared and investigated using direct titration, FTIR and fluorescence spectroscopy. Chymotrypsin anthranilate (CA) fluorescence and it quenching was studied as a function of pH, ionic strength and urea concentration. The emission maximum of CA exhibits a blue shift with increasing pH and titrates with a pK(,a) of 7.7. This pK(,a) decreases for CA derivatives with surface carboxyls blocked. The titration of His 57 is likely responsible for this pH shift. Acrylamide was a better quencher at pH 8 than …

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) upon thermoregulation and respiration. Eight adult males whose ages ranged from 19 to 33 years were asked to engage in this study. The respiratory parameters included oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, respiratory quotient, minute ventilation, and breathing frequency. The thermoregulatory parameters included rectal temperatures and total skin temperatures. Before experimentation commenced, each subject underwent a maximum oxygen consumption test (VO₂ max) to determine 60% of their VO₂ max. Purified Schwann cells were cultured from neonatal rat sciatic nerve using a modification of the method of Brockes (Brockes, J.P. et al, Brain Res. 165(1979) 105-118). Schwann cells and contaminating fibroblasts were unambiguously identified using fluorescent antibodies to 2'3' cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase and the thy 1.1 antigen respectively. The Schwann cells were quiescent unless challenged with mitogens, They proliferated rapidly in response to the soluable mitogen, cholera toxin, or to membrane fractions from rat CNS or PNS, prepared by the method of DeVries (DeVries, G.H., J Neurochem, 40 (1983) 1709-1717).
