Agentive Theory As Therapy: An Outcome Study, Daniel K. Judd

The present study evaluated the efficacy of a four-week seminar which emphasized the principles of Agentive Theory. This theory, which is compatible with theories of a phenomenological/ existential perspective, was first developed by C. T. Warner, an American philosopher. Agentive Theorists/Therapists emphasize that our negative emotions, ie., depression, anger, etc. , are assertions or judgments we make and not merely feelings we are responsible for controlling or expressing. Forty-eight outpatients who sought help with personal/emotional problems from a department of behavioral medicine were assigned to either a treatment or waiting-list control Group. Bench-scale treatability research conducted at the University of North Dakota Sanitary Engineering Laboratory demonstrated that the coupled, downflow, biological fluidized bed process was an effective system for the treatment of synthetic fuels processing wastewater. In the biological fluidized bed process the nitrification and denitrification columns were coupled to nitrify ammonia to nitrite and/or nitrate, and then to denitrify nitrite and/or nitrate to nitrogen gas, in addition to the breakdown of carbonaceous and organic nitrogen. The wastewater used in the research was generated by the Great Plains Coal Gasification Plant located at Beulah, North Dakota. The two fluidized bed reactors contained …

Antes (1974) described two stages of typical picture viewing behavior. First, subjects scanned, making long saccades to highly informative areas which were briefly fixated. Second, informative areas become "bases of operation" from which shorter saccades were made to less informative regions which were fixated for a longer time. The present study addressed anxiety's effects on this pattern. Research suggests that increased arousal, of which anxiety is one type, narrows attention to the most task salient or informative cues (Hockey, 1970). The purpose of the study was to explore elementary-aged children's conceptions of death through the use of stories and to examine the use of story as a medium in the expression of children's conceptions of death. The subjects were 31 elementary-aged children (12 kindergarteners. 9 second graders, and 10 fourth graders). Each group was randomly divided into Group I and Group II. Group I (contextual stories) listened to three stories that reflected real life experiences with death; stories were adapted from children's literature. Glucose-6-phosphatase, EC 3.1.3.9, and glucokinase, EC 2.7.1.2, catalyze opposing reactions in rat liver, reactions 1 and 2 below. Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive, catalase-positive, coagulase positive, non-motile, facultatively anaerobic coccus usually arranged in irregular clusters that commonly causes pustules, carbuncles, impetigo, cellulitis, and post-surgical wound infections. S. aureus also causes septicemia, endocarditis, pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, exfoliative skin disease, scalded skin syndrome, toxic shock syndrome, and food poisoning. The method currently used for distinguishing among strains of Staphylococcus aureus is bacteriophage typing.The goal of this research was to develop a biotyping system for differentiating among strains of S. aureus. The McVille, North Dakota, Municipal Waste Stabilization Lagoon is situated above the McVille Aquifer, an unconfined glaciofluvial aquifer capable of significant water yields. The site contains a 3-D network of 29 monitoring wells. Standing waste-water is maintained in the clay-lined, primary-operating cell. Operating practices at the site entail periodic discharges of waste-water from the lined cell to an unlined cell, a procedure which results in rapid infiltration.

The shape and extent of the groundwater contaminant plume caused by the waste-stabilization process is best delineated by the distribution of chloride. Background wells contain less than 10 mg/L chloride. The area up …

Several studies in the field of laterality have suggested that the left and right cerebral hemispheres of the brain may play different roles in emotional as well as cognitive processing. A study was conducted to test several specific hypotheses derived from theories proposing that the right hemisphere (RH) may have a generally greater involvement in emotional behavior, may be more expansive and less constrained by rational or conventional thinking, and may be particularly involved in such negative emotions as sadness.Twenty-five male and twenty-five female adult volunteers were each presented five Rorschach slides to the left visual hemifield (LVF) and five …

Metal vapor reactor syntheses of 23 $\pi$-areneML$\sb2$ complexes, where M = Fe, Co, or Ni, were attempted. These reactions were used as a synthetic survey to expand the number of complexes available for study. Although the survey has not yet resulted in the isolation of new $\pi$-areneML$\sb2$ complexes, it has resulted in 10 potentially useful synthetic reactions which may eventually lead to several new complexes of this type. In addition, an attempt to synthesize the $\pi$-areneML$\sb2$ complex ($\eta\sp5$-pyrrole)(2,2$\sp\prime$-bipyridine)ion(0) in the synthetic survey lead to the synthesis of the new octahedral complex bis(N-pyrrolyl)bis(2,2$\sp\prime$-bipyridine)ion(II) and the discovery of a new type of …

Stomach content analysis of 395 predatory fish caught near the point of smolt release suggested that rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax (Mitchill), may be an important buffer of predation on stocked chinook smolts, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum). Numbers of chinook smolts consumed per predator were higher, while number of rainbow smelt consumed per predator were lower, then water temperatures at 5 m were greater than 17$\sp\circ$C than when they were less than 17$\sp\circ$C. Rainbow smelt distributed lower in the water column and apparently became unavailable to shallow water predators later in the season. Salmon smolts surface-fed primarily on flying insects, and were …

The population biology and life history patterns of the Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus Ord), an endangered shorebird, were studied throughout the species' range from 1981-1987. Life history patterns were investigated in southern Manitoba at West Shoal Lake, Lake Manitoba, and Lake Winnipeg (1981-1985); and at Lake of the Woods, Minnesota (1985-1986). Distribution patterns were determined via censusing during the breeding season and winter (1983-1987). In 1985, feather pulp was collected for electrophoretic analyses from 122 fledglings in Saskatchewan, North Dakota, Manitoba, Minnesota, and New Brunswick. Blood was collected from 57 adults in Manitoba and Minnesota to electrophoretically examine brood parentage.Widespread …
