Age, Gender, And Religious Differences In Moral Perspective, Samuel L. Clay

An investigation was conducted to see if age and gender are related to a preference for a caring versus a justice morality. The World View Questionnaire with 40 word pairs was used to measure a preference for a caring morality. It was found that there was a significant gender difference in the caring score, with the females scoring higher than the males. There also was a significant religious difference in the caring score with religious and especially Mormon subjects scoring higher than non-religious subjects. There was not, however, a significant age difference as was predicted.

Purification And Characterization Of Two Oxidoreductases Involved In Bile Acid Modification By The Intestinal Anaerobe Eubacterium Sp. Vpi 12708, Clifton Franklund

Two enzymes, a 7α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (7α-HSDH) and an NADH-dependent flavin oxidoreductase (NADH:FOR), have been purified to apparent electrophoretic homogeneity from the intestinal anaerobe Eubacterium sp. VPI 12708. Using a protocol consisting of four chromatographic separations, the 7α-HSDH was purified by a factor of over 1200-fold with more than a 30% final recovery. Subunit molecular mass was estimated to be 32 Kdal by SDS-PAGE, while native molecular mass estimates from gel filtration were 124 Kdal. The purified 7α-HSDH was able to utilize a variety of bile acids containing an unhindered 7α-hydroxy moiety as substrates, existing either as free acids or glycine …

The use of phosphine gas requires that respiratory protection be used if exposures exceed the OSHA permissible exposure limit. As with other chemical exposures limits many of the references used to establish occupational health guidelines date back to the 1930’s and 1940’s. This is quite common and is the case with phosphine gas. Initial planning for fumigations involving magnesium phosphide requires that a hazard assessment be performed. Expected worker exposures based on previous monitoring or test data was not readily available. This thesis deals with four major design movements, beginning with Constructivism, and ending with Deconstructivism, including two other movements, as intermediate links, that developed in the period between International - Swiss Design and Postmodernism. One major function of prolactin in the female is the stimulation of mammary gland development for lactation. It is well established in the rat that during periods of lactation, when serum prolactin levels are high, there is a suppression of the serum luteinizing hormone level. Prolactin has also been shown to inhibit the postcastration rise in serum luteinizing hormone in rats. Penetration of blood vessel basement membranes (BMs) by metastatic cells apparently proceeds by a three step process involving attachment, degradation, and migration. In the current study, isolated glomerular BMs (GBMs) were used as model substrates for studying cell attachment to BMs.Murine and bovine gomeruli were isolated by differential sieving of homogenized renal tissues. GBMs were prepared by treating glomeruli with detergents and enzymes. This was facilitated by using "sieving chambers" which prevented tissue loss during the detergent extraction procedure. Phosphate-modified oligodeoxyribonucleotide analogs have been extensively investigated for the sequence hybridization arrest of mRNA translation and as biochemical probes of nucleic acid-protein interaction. The goal of our research was to synthesize a new class of nonionic oligodeoxyribonucleotides which structurally closely resembled natural DNA.Our initial research concentrated on the synthesis of bis(deoxythymidine) difluoromethylphosphonate, a dinucleotide analog of 5$\sp\prime$-deoxythymidyl-3$\sp\prime$-deoxythymidine in which a CF$\sb2$H group replaces a phosphate OH. These properties of glucose-6-phosphatase make it a likely candidate for regulation of glucose metabolism.The effect of selected intermediate metabolites on the phosphotransferase and phosphohydrolase activities of glucose-6-phosphatase was investigated with intact and detergent-disrupted microsomal preparations. The impact of mammalian predation on upland nesting waterfowl was studied in central- North Dakota during the summers of 1987 and 1988. Survival of artificial nests was examined in relation to nest density, vegetation cover, distance from roads, active predator dens, and other artificial nests in a plot. Survival of artificial nests was also compared between an area with predator control and one without predator control.

Artificial waterfowl nests located in high density plots had a significantly lower probability of survival than nests located in low density plots. Although there were significant differences in vegetation height and density between years, …

A videotaped counseling session of a therapist and a client, a client description, and a therapist description served as the stimuli. I studied gray partridge (Perdix perdix) ecology in north-central North Dakota during 1985-87. The primary goals of this study were to identify habitats important to gray partridge survival and nesting, and to provide baseline data on partridge ecology in North Dakota. I captured and radio-tagged 100 gray partridge, mainly during winter. Individuals were tracked by a vehicle-mounted telemetry system until August of each year. Home ranges, movements, habitat use, and survival were calculated by using the telemetry locations. Winter home ranges averaged 117 ha, and were larger than previously reported in North America. The societal preference for a slender body image has caused an increasing number of adolescents to diet or use unusual methods of weight control. Some adolescents progress along the continuum of restrained eating toward the development of pathological eating disorders. In order to identify risk factors in the development of eating disorders, eating attitudes and behaviors of 454 normal adolescents were studied by using the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) and a personal background questionnaire. The higher the subscale scores on the EDI the more similar the individual's perceptions to those of victims with a pathological eating disorder.

Forty eight elderly subjects who were residents of nursing homes and retirement centers participated in the study which was designed to evaluate verbal memory functioning in presumed Senile Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type (SDAT). Half of the subjects exhibited significant decline in memory as evidenced by raw scores of 50 or below on the Wechsler Memory Scale. Declines in memory were not attributable to depression, cerebrovascular accident, alcohol abuse or severe mental disorders. The current research was designed to compare effectiveness of two widely used stress reduction methods, Progressive Relaxation Training (PRT) and Stress Inoculation Training (SIT). The entire Fall 1987, freshman class of Creighton University School of Dentistry participated (N =.68). Fifty-eight Subjects completed the project. Students were randomly assigned to a treatment, PRT (N = 12) or SIT (N = 17), or to one of two control groups, placebo (N = 13), or no treatment (N = 16).
