Foraminiferida Of The Madison Group (Mississippian) Of The Williston Basin, North Dakota, Kurt E. Eylands

More than 1500 thin-sections from 73 wells in the North Dakota part of the Williston Basin were searched for their foraminiferal content. This thin-section survey of the Bottineau, Tilston, Frobisher-Alida, and Ratcliffe intervals yielded more than 700 identifiable foraminifers assigned to 26 species.

Most of the Madison foraminifers of the Williston Basin can be placed in one of two superfamilies, the Tournayellacia and the Endothyracea. The Bottineau and Tilston intervals yielded more specimens from the superfamily Tournayellacea while the Frobisher-Alida and Ratcliffe intervals yielded more specimens from the superfamily Endothyracea.

Sedimentary Depositional Cyclicity, Mission Canyon And Charles Formations (Mississippian), Williston Basin, North Dakota, Jean L. Hoff

Workers within the Williston Basin have repeatedly reported the presence of sedimentary cyclicity within the carbonate and evaporite succession of the Mississippian Madison Group. Descriptions of cyclicity are diverse and commonly conflict. Previous work has been exclusively qualitative. This study used a group of statistical techniques in a method designed specifically for the objective identification and evaluation of cyclicity in the lithofacies sequence of the Mission Canyon and lower Charles Formations in North Dakota.

Twelve cores were sampled at every visually distinguishable lithologic unit. Forty-six lithologic components were counted in each sample on a presence-absence basis. The phi association coefficient …

Clathrin coated vesicles (CCVs) are complex organelles reported to bind specific glycolytic enzymes. The purpose of this study was to further biochemically characterize the interactions of selected enzymes with CCV's by conventional and new techniques.Purified brain CCVs were observed to retain, in varying degrees, endogenous glycolytic enzymes, with glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and pyruvate kinase (PK) having the highest specific activities. Furthermore, Scatchard and Hill plot analyses of saturation binding data suggested that the binding of pure aldolase (ALD) and GAPDH involved heterogenous binding sites or cooperativity. The molecule(s) involved at the axon plasma membrane (axolemma) which causes Schwann cells to proliferate has been investigated by three biochemical techniques: 1) Alkaline extraction of axolemma resulted in recovery of 95% of the mitogenic activity and 50% of the protein in the membrane-bound portion of the axolemma. 2) The axonal mitogen for Schwann cells may be associated with heparan sulfate proteoglycans at the axonal surface. Treatment of axolemma with heparitinase, which cleaves the glycosidic bonds of sulfated glycosaminoglycans, allowed mitogenic activity to be solubilized. 3) Treatment of axolemma with heparin, a highly sulfated glycosaminoglycan analogous to heparan sulfate, resulted …

Clostridium scindens is an obligate anaerobe isolated from the normal intestinal flora of man. It is the only bacterium known at present to synthesize both steroid-17,20-desmolase and 20α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (ZOα-HSDH). This study was undertaken to characterize these neutral steroid transforming reactions in extracts of C. scindens; to purify and characterize the enzymes responsible for side-chain cleavage and 20α- hydroxysteroid oxidoreduction and to clone the genes encoding these enzymes with a view towards studying the mechanism of induction by steroids in a prokaryotic system. Antagonists have been crucial in the characterization of nicotine's pharmacology. Initial evidence for the existence of central nicotinic receptors was based on the fact that nicotine produced a number of behavioral effects that were antagonized by ganglionic blockers that crossed the blood-brain barrier, such as mecamylamine and pempidine. Although the mechanism of action of these compounds has been studied extensively in the periphery, little is known about their mechanisms of action in the brain. The Grand Forks Municipal Landfill, located in the Red River Valley of eastern North Dakota, accepts household refuse from the city of Grand Forks and from surrounding rural communities including several towns in northwestern Minnesota. The landfill occupies 160 acres (64.8 hectars) and another 160 acres (64.8 hectars) is available for expansion. The trench method of disposal is used at the landfill.

A geologic and hydrogeologic investigation was undertaken at the landfill to determine the characteristics of the shallow, saturated, fine-grained lacustrine sediments for solid waste disposal. Test holes were drilled to collect core samples for textural analysis, clay mineralogy …

The purpose of this study is to utilize high resolution SEM to examine topographical features of acellular renal cortical basement membranes (BMs) in the rat. Ticks are both vectors and reservoirs for significant pathogens of man and livestock. They are currently controlled through use of acaracides, but have rapidly developed resistance to every new acaracide produced to date. Alternative methods of control are needed. One proposed alternative is immunologic control, achieved through vaccinations which induce resistance to tick infestation. This proposal stems from the knowledge that cattle and laboratory animals actively acquire resistance to infestation. Immunization with crude extracts of different ixodid life cycle stages or organs has induced limited levels of resistance compared to acquired resistance. The present study evaluated the impact of age and several individual difference measures on lexical access. Additionally, eight different levels of frequency were evaluated for the stimulus words. These frequency levels were derived from the frequency of usage of these words in common reading materials. The response measured was latency of reading words out loud as they appeared on a screen. The results indicated no difference between older and younger adults on measures of anxiety, depression, or overall health. The older adults scored higher on a measure of vocabulary skills, while the younger adults scored higher on tasks involving abstract …

A systems model has been proposed as useful theoretical framework for the study of incestuous families (Alexander, 1985) and is frequently used in the therapeutic treatment of the victim of sexual abuse and his or her perpetrator (Larson and Maddock, 1986). The purpose of this study was the construction and standardization of an instrument for assessing a multiaxial model of enmeshed and disengaged family systems which is based on the prior work of Minuchin et al. The capacity of the HL-60 cell line to differentiate to macrophage-like cells, which may be immunologically competent, has proven to be invaluable in the study of these cells as a model for macrophage function.
