Picture Viewing As A Test Of Attention To Food And Body Image Cues In Restrained Versus Nonrestrained Eaters, Sally Rose Brinza

Restrained eaters, those who chronically and severely restrict food intake in order to lose weight, are thought to exhibit thoughts and behaviors similar to those seen in semi-starved and eating disordered (bulimic and anorexic) individuals. A paradoxical tendency to overeat once food restraint is disinhibited has been noted in restrainers. Food and body weight preoccupation and hyperresponsiveness to external food cues have been hypothesized to occur in restrained individuals; however the literature reports conflicting results and these factors have not been thoroughly investigated. Cognitive factors which differentiate restrained eaters from nonrestrained eaters may affect information processing.

Characterization Of Multilayer Perceptrons And Their Application To Multisensor Automatic Target Detection, Dennis W. Ruck

The multilayer perceptron was extensively analyzed. A technique for analyzing the multilayer perceptron, the saliency measure, was developed which provides a measure of the importance of inputs. The method was compared to the conventional statistical technique of best features and shown to provide similar rankings of the input. Using the saliency measure, it is shown that the multilayer perceptron effectively ignores useless inputs and that whether it is trained using backpropagation or extended Kalman filtering, the weighting of the inputs is the same. The backpropagation training algorithm is shown to be a degenerate version of the extended Kalman filter. The …

Chautauqua, a totally American institution which impacted nearly forty million people in its approximately fifty-year existence from 1874 to 1930, was a place to enrich lives through education, inspiration, and recreation. Devils Lake, North Dakota, a small, isolated town on the Midwestern plains, located on the shores of a large, salt-water lake, became the site of the nation's third largest independent Chautauqua in the nation, operating from 1893 to 1929.

The purpose of this study was to determine the consequences to emotionally disturbed elementary school girls of being in the minority in self-contained classes for emotionally disturbed children. This study was conducted in MISII (Modified Instructional Service II) classes, primarily for the emotionally disturbed, in the New York City Public Schools. The ratio of boys to girls was 6.5 to 1. A survey was distributed to teachers of such classes with at least one girl attending. Current experimental evidence suggests that muscle spindles do play a significant role in the sensation of joint position and velocity. However, the dynamic characteristics of muscle spindles are complex and highly variable. Researchers have found, in the primary sensory cortex of primates, neurons whose activities are proportional to joint position and velocity. Some of these neurons were excited only by activating muscles spindles. The overall objective of this research was to find methods for incorporating CF$\sb2$ groups into nucleosides in order to obtain biologically active molecules. The nucleoside analogs were designed to be inhibitors of DNA synthesis and to block viral replication. Particular emphasis was directed toward analogs with the potential to inhibit HTLV-III encoded reverse transcriptase. The overall purpose of this study was to provide basic data regarding the influence of metals on a free-living terrestrial cyanobacterium, and to demonstrate the utility of laboratory studies for assigning biological significance to field observations on soil-algal ecology.Because Nostoc commune Vaucher is a subaerial inhabitant of soils, it did not respond favorably to traditional liquid culture techniques. Therefore, a filter-culture technique was developed whereby N. commune was grown as a surface film on membrane filters superimposed on an inorganic nutrient agar. Real glomerular basement membranes (GBMs) exhibit a charge-selective barrier, consisting of anionic sites, that restricts the passage of anionic molecules into the urine. These sites are located primarily in the laminae rarae interna (LRI) and externa (LRE) of the GBM and consist of heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG). Previous efforts to localize the HSPG core protein within various layers of the GBM have been contradictory. The development of specific antiviral therapy has increased the need for rapid viral diagnosis and necessitates a better understanding of viral epidemiology. The purposes of this study were to determine the efficiency of immunofluorescent assay employing monoclonal antibodies from commercial sources to detect respiratory virus antigens in clinical specimens and to define the epidemiology of respiratory viruses in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Throat swab, nasopharyngeal swabs and nasopharyngeal washes were excellent specimens for studying viral epidemiology; virus isolation rates were 7.7%, 33.2%, and 39.7%, respectively. A secondary question asked was: To what extent are teachers‘ behavior and attitudes affected by follow-up consultation? Gathering arid preserving wild fruits and vegetables for food and medicine, especially from the wooded bottomlands, was a traditional part of the Lakota culture. Plant use among the Lakota has been greatly reduced and in some cases, completely eliminated by the damming of the Missouri River by Oahe Dam. This dam, which forced the Lakota of Standing Rock Reservation to give up their homes in the bottomlands in violation of their treaty rights of 1868 had a considerable impact on the biogeography of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, in January I960, almost 200 Indian families were evacuated from their homes …

A telephone survey was used to measure North Dakota state employees' experience with sexual harassment on the job. Survey respondents who reported being sexually harassed were asked an additional set of questions aimed at quantifying the experience, its effects and use of formal remedies. Expectations about survey results were generated from a review of the literature and other survey findings. While many expectations were not supported by the data, several important findings emerged. Specifically, 17.1 percent of all respondents, including 22.9 percent of women respondents and 10.7 percent of all male respondents reported being sexually harassed in state government during …

The present study examined the degree to which reported sex differences in verbal and spatial memory performance are due to confounds between the sexes on the individual difference factors of verbal ability, spatial ability, and sex-role orientation. Specifically, college age males and females were administered psychometric tests of verbal ability, spatial ability, and sex-role orientation. The contribution of each of these factors to predicting subjects' scores on verbal and spatial memory tasks was analyzed using regression analysis procedures.

This study addressed the question of whether or not there is a relationship between allergy and coronary artery spasm. This thesis contends that the Book of Mormon can be profitably read from a rhetorical perspective. It employs Kenneth Burke's ideas concerning language, texts, and his method of dramatistic analysis, to reveal certain persuasive aspects of the Book of Mormon, and to urge action in response to the persuasion of the Book of Mormon.

I studied mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) ecology in summer and fall on the Kinley Plateau study area (KPSA) of Billings County, North Dakota, during May-December 1984-1986. The primary objective of this research was to examine habitat use by mule deer in North Dakota's badlands. Data also were collected on vegetation composition, and social structure, activity patterns, and movement of the deer.I captured and individually marked 19 fawns during the summers of 1984-86. I examined the endocrinological regulation of social behavior in two sympatric species of sandpipers exhibiting very different social systems. Semipalmated Sandpipers (Calidris pusilla) are monogamous and territorial, while Red-necked Phalaropes (Phalaropus lobatus) are facultatively polyandrous and non-territorial. Both parents incubate equally in the Semipalmated Sandpiper, while only male phalaropes care for eggs and young. By comparing circulating hormone levels (prolactin, testosterone, progesterone, and estradiol) between species and sexes throughout the breeding season, differences in hormonal profiles were related to behavior.Blood samples were collected in the summers of 1985 to 1987 from individuals of both species breeding in a 3 km$\sp2$ …
