Long Term Effects Of Foster Care On Social Relationships, Angela Hackworth-Wilson
Long Term Effects Of Foster Care On Social Relationships, Angela Hackworth-Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
Ainsworth and Bowlby's Attachment Theory suggest that young children experience lasting effects of disconnection if separated from their primary caretaker. Foster children are legally removed from their primary caretakers, yet the effects of foster care on later social relationships of foster children is unknown. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate the perceptions of adult foster children, ages 18 years and over, who were placed into foster care under 5 years of age. The major challenge was to obtain qualifying participants, first, because this is an invisible population in the American culture and, secondly, these individuals are hesitant …

Music Preference And Its Effects On Emotion Processes And Identity Development In Young Adult Females: An Examination Of The "Emo" Subculture, Marta Orozco
Theses and Dissertations
Average daily listening hours and annual sales figures give testament to the important position that music holds in the personal and social lives of individuals in contemporary cultures (Arnett, 1991; North, Hargreaves, & O’Neill, 2000; Schwartz & Fouts, 2003; Ter Bogt, Raaijmakers, Vollebergh, van Well, & Sikkema, 2003). Youth, especially, dedicate considerable amounts of time and money to music listening (Roberts, Henriksen, & Foehr, 2009). However, it has been suggested that certain music preferences and music subcultures are associated with problem behaviors and/or internalizing distress in youth, particularly females (Miranda & Claes, 2008, 2009; Selfhout, Delsing, Ter Bogt, & Meeus, …
Produce & Achieve: A Case Study Of Inner-City Education, Daryl A. Tate
Produce & Achieve: A Case Study Of Inner-City Education, Daryl A. Tate
Theses and Dissertations
Despite efforts at narrowing the achievement gap, ethnicity-based disparities in achievement are an enduring and pervasive issue in American education. Holy Angels, a high achieving, African American, urban, elementary school in Chicago, Illinois offers a model for successful education of ethnic minority children. Despite coming from predominantly welfare supported, single-mother homes, located in crime ridden inner-city Chicago, during the period bounded by this study, Holy Angels’ students produced test scores among the highest in the nation. Previous research indicates that characteristics of schools that support academic achievement particularly among ethnic minority students are high teacher expectations, academic emphasis, and culturally …

Assessment And Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In Latino Children, Gesenia S. Sloan-Peña
Theses and Dissertations
There is an increase in the number of children who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. However, significant racial and ethnic disparities exist in the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder. Based on the literature, Latino children appear to be under diagnosed or misdiagnosed with other psychological disorders rather than autism spectrum disorder. In addition, Latino children are typically diagnosed at a later age than their White peers. There is almost no research devoted to the assessment of autism spectrum disorder with young Latino children and there is insufficient research related to cultural perceptions of symptoms which can influence parental …
The Effects Of Parent-Child Agreement On Academic Achievement, Alea A. Baron
The Effects Of Parent-Child Agreement On Academic Achievement, Alea A. Baron
Theses and Dissertations
Achievement in youth across America has been defined by youth report card grades and standardized test scores, with higher scores typically being the gateway to college, scholarships, and future financial success. There is abundant evidence that shows parenting factors and the parent-child relationship are correlated with high academic achievement in youth. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate if the effects of high parent-child agreement on youth self-esteem and self-efficacy significantly correlated with high youth academic achievement on classroom achievement scores. Data from Dr. Judy Ho's The STAGES Project in student's entering the 6th grade was utilized in …
Femininity And Sexual Well-Being: Pleasure, Authenticity, And Safety Across The Female Lifespan, Via Strong
Femininity And Sexual Well-Being: Pleasure, Authenticity, And Safety Across The Female Lifespan, Via Strong
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional femininity is a construct that impacts women throughout their development and manifests through inauthenticity in relationships, self-objectification and inauthentic sexuality. Traditional femininity has been associated with greater depression, body shame, dissociation, and negative sexual outcomes. Traits of traditionally defined femininity can impede women’s ability to assert their sexual wants and needs and can increase the likelihood of negative health outcomes and negative psychological consequences, all of which impact relationship satisfaction and sexual well-being. To date, the majority of research in this area has focused on adolescent and college aged women. The current study addressed the gap in existing research …

Qualitative Analysis Of Expressions Of Gratitude In Clients Who Have Experienced Trauma, Roxana Zarrabi
Qualitative Analysis Of Expressions Of Gratitude In Clients Who Have Experienced Trauma, Roxana Zarrabi
Theses and Dissertations
Although gratitude may seem straightforward, it is a complex construct comprised of cognitive, emotional and behavioral elements. Gratitude has been presented as a positive psychological character trait, coping response, attitude, moral virtue, emotion, and habit (Emmons, McCullough, & Tsang, 2003), and significant overlap exists among these definitional presentations (Lambert, Graham, & Fincham, 2009). Despite definitional limitations, promising evidence indicates that gratitude can help survivors positively process and cope with trauma and contribute to the post-trauma recovery experience (Kashdan, Uswatte, & Julian, 2006; Vernon, Dillon, & Steiner, 2009). Yet, there is a lack of research examining how gratitude is expressed in …

Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Specific To Anorexia Nervosa: A Critical Review Of The Literature On Executive Functioning Symptomatology And Cognitive Remediation Treatment Applications Tailored To This Patient Population, Kayleigh Elizabeth Hale
Theses and Dissertations
Engaging, maintaining, and treating patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) remains a significant challenge for clinicians, hypothesized explanations for which are thought to involve specific executive functioning impairments. The neuropsychological treatment paradigm Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) represents the translation of neurocognitive research into practice, and is thought to remediate neuropsychological symptoms and associated maladaptive cognitive processes. Additionally, the etiological model of AN related to executive functioning provides a conceptual framework for this novel approach to treatment. This study identifies and examines such a model, in addition to CRT protocols. Methodology involved a comprehensive synthesis and critical analysis of the literature pertaining …

A Structure/Function Analysis Of Nhsl1b In Facial Branchiomotor Neurons, John Ojumu
A Structure/Function Analysis Of Nhsl1b In Facial Branchiomotor Neurons, John Ojumu
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study was to identify critical regions of a novel gene, Nance-Horan syndrome-like 1b (nhsl1b). It was previously discovered that C-terminal truncation of the Nhsl1b protein in nhsl1b mutants resulted in a loss of migration in the facial motor neurons of the hindbrain (Walsh et al. 2011). As nhsl1b expresses many isoforms, multiple targets were investigated in order to determine which transcript bears the largest impact on the motor neurons. Using confocal microscopy to observe immunostained embryos, we examined a mutation in an nhsl1b transcript that encodes a WHD, a domain that is known to …
The Effect Of Statins On Il-33 Mediated Mast Cell Function, Marcela Taruselli
The Effect Of Statins On Il-33 Mediated Mast Cell Function, Marcela Taruselli
Theses and Dissertations
This study demonstrates original findings of statin effects on IL-33 stimulated mast cells. Statins are a class of drugs used to lower cholesterol production by targeting HMG CoA reductase. These commonly prescribed drugs have been shown to be immunomodulatory. In this study, we have found that pretreatment with statins has a variety of effects on IL-33 stimulated mast cells. Atorvastatin suppresses TNF and IL-6 production, while fluvastatin significantly enhances release of these proinflammatory cytokines in BMMCs. Although they have differing effects on cytokine production, both statins lowered ST2 expression on the cell surface, decreased cell viability, and enhanced expression of …
The Export Of An Algal Toxin Into Terrestrial Predators Via Emerging Aquatic Insects, Nicholas J. Moy
The Export Of An Algal Toxin Into Terrestrial Predators Via Emerging Aquatic Insects, Nicholas J. Moy
Theses and Dissertations
Algal blooms are directly related to human-caused nutrient enrichment of water bodies. The cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa produces microcystin (MC), a toxin that has been linked with mortalities and illness of many organisms. We show that MC is not constrained by the aquatic-terrestrial ecotone. MC was detected in a primary consumer and emerging aquatic invertebrate (Hexagenia Mayfly), a terrestrial insect and predator of emerging aquatic invertebrates (Tetragnathidae Spider), and a vertebrate consumer (Prothonotary Warbler). Mayfly and spider MC levels varied across the blooming period. MC levels in prothonotary warbler livers varied by age class; nestlings having the highest levels. MC levels …

Ex Vivo Dna Cloning, Adam B. Fisher
Ex Vivo Dna Cloning, Adam B. Fisher
Theses and Dissertations
Genetic engineering of microbes has developed rapidly along with our ability to synthesize DNA de novo. Yet, even with decreasing DNA synthesis costs there remains a need for inexpensive, rapid and reliable methods for assembling synthetic DNA into larger constructs or combinatorial libraries. While technological advances have resulted in powerful techniques for in vitro and in vivo assembly of DNA, each suffers inherent disadvantages. Here, an ex vivo DNA cloning suite using crude cellular lysates derived from E. coli is demonstrated to amplify and assemble DNA containing small sequence homologies. Further, the advantages of an ex vivo approach are …
Comparing Welch's Anova, A Kruskal-Wallis Test And Traditional Anova In Case Of Heterogeneity Of Variance, Hangcheng Liu
Comparing Welch's Anova, A Kruskal-Wallis Test And Traditional Anova In Case Of Heterogeneity Of Variance, Hangcheng Liu
Theses and Dissertations
Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is a robust test against the normality assumption, but it may be inappropriate when the assumption of homogeneity of variance has been violated. Welch ANOVA and the Kruskal-Wallis test (a non-parametric method) can be applicable for this case. In this study we compare the three methods in empirical type I error rate and power, when heterogeneity of variance occurs and find out which method is the most suitable with which cases including balanced/unbalanced, small/large sample size, and/or with normal/non-normal distributions.

Functional Characterization Of Rai1 In Zebrafish, Joshua S. Beach
Theses and Dissertations
Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS; OMIM #182290) is a multiple congenital abnormality and intellectual disability (ID) disorder caused by either an interstitial deletion of the 17p11.2 region containing the retinoic acid induced-1 (RAI1) gene or a mutation of the RAI1 gene. Individuals diagnosed with SMS typically present characteristics such as ID, self-injurious behavior, sleep disturbance, ocular and otolaryngological abnormalities, craniofacial and skeletal abnormalities, neurological and behavioral abnormalities, as well as other systemic defects and manifestations. Previous work by Vyas in 2009 showed temporal expression of rai1 in zebrafish embryos as early as 9 hpf. We hypothesize that there is maternal …
Effects Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Agonists In Assays Of Pain-Stimulated And Pain-Depressed Behavior In Rats, Kelen Freitas
Effects Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Agonists In Assays Of Pain-Stimulated And Pain-Depressed Behavior In Rats, Kelen Freitas
Theses and Dissertations
Though a host of analgesics have been developed to alleviate pain, especially acute pain, significant side effects and a lack of long-term efficacy have encouraged research attempts to pursue novel targets that may be associated with fewer side effects or a more sustained efficacy. Among these new targets are members of the nicotinic family of acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). The non-selective nAChR agonists nicotine and epibatidine have been shown to function as potent antinociceptive drugs in many acute and chronic preclinical pain models, while nicotine has produced analgesic effects in humans. However, these non-selective nAChRs agonists also produce various side effects, …
Rheb Dynamics On Lysosomal Membranes Determines Mtorc1 Activity After Loss Of P53 Or Activation Of Ampk, Catherine M. Bell
Rheb Dynamics On Lysosomal Membranes Determines Mtorc1 Activity After Loss Of P53 Or Activation Of Ampk, Catherine M. Bell
Theses and Dissertations
The tumor suppressor TP53 is the most frequently altered gene in human cancers. The growth-promoting complex, mTORC1 plays a part of the oncogenic profile caused by dysfunctional p53. mTORC1 sits downstream of AMPK and other crucial tumor suppressors/oncogenes, PTEN, LKB1, and Akt. The antifolate pemetrexed was found by this laboratory to activate AMPK via the inhibition of the enzyme AICART in de novo purine synthesis. This work presents a mechanism of mTORC1 activation with p53 loss, as well as of mTORC1 inhibition by pemetrexed-induced AMPK. We have found that mTORC1 activity was substantially upregulated by the loss …
Synthetic Cannabinoids Versus Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol: Abuse-Related Consequences Of Enhanced Efficacy At The Cannabinoid 1 Receptor, Travis Grim
Theses and Dissertations
In the past ten years, synthetic cannabinoids (SC) have emerged as drugs of abuse. Unlike D9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), many SCs are associated with serious health complications and death. One way in which THC and SCs differ lies with their enhanced potency and efficacy at the CB1 receptor. No current methods exist to measure efficacy at the CB1 receptor in vivo, and the abuse-related properties of SC cannabinoids are not well explored. Here, we utilized CB1 wild type (WT), heterozygous (HET), and knockout (KO) mice. By employing CB1 ligands which differ in efficacy we have …

In-Silico Models For Capturing The Static And Dynamic Characteristics Of Robustness Within Complex Networks, Bhanu K. Kamapantula
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the role of structural patterns within complex networks is essential to establish the governing principles of such networks. Social networks, biological networks, technological networks etc. can be considered as complex networks where information processing and transport plays a central role. Complexity in these net works can be due to abstraction, scale, functionality and structure. Depending on the abstraction each of these can be categorized further. Gene regulatory networks are one such category of biological networks. Gene regulatory networks (GRNs) are assumed to be robust under internal and external perturbations. Network motifs such as feed-forward loop motif and bifan motif …
