Theses and Dissertations
We studied the effects of curcumin on the proliferation and viability of MDA-MB-468 breast cancer cells and its effects on the expression ofBcl-2 and p53 proteins in these cells. Based on previous studies, we predicted a dose-dependent increase in p53 (tumor suppressor) expression, and a decrease in Bcl-2 (anti-apoptotic oncoprotein) expression. Briefly, MDA-MB468 cells were seeded into 12-well plates at 2.0 * 104 cells/well and allowed to grow for 72 hrs. Cells were treated with curcumin at 0, 25, 50 and 100 pM in triplicate at time zero and cultured for another 24 hours. All data were obtained using a …
Factors Contributing To Attitudes Towards Disciplinary Parenting Styles, Amanda Marshall
Factors Contributing To Attitudes Towards Disciplinary Parenting Styles, Amanda Marshall
Theses and Dissertations
The debate on whether or not corporal punishment is an acceptable method of discipline for children has been continuously researched and has consistently shown that the use of corporal punishment has a multitude of negative consequences on children (Gershoff, 2013). The present study aims to understand the factors which may contribute to the persistence of these supportive attitudes towards corporal punishment and abuse. The results of this study reveal that the age an individual becomes a parent/guardian is negatively correlated with their support for corporal punishment and acceptance of physical abuse. Strong correlations were also found between acceptance of abuse …
Latitudinal Gradient Facilitates Adaptive Population Differentiation Of Campanulastrum Americanum (American Bellflower), Marisa L. Naciuk
Latitudinal Gradient Facilitates Adaptive Population Differentiation Of Campanulastrum Americanum (American Bellflower), Marisa L. Naciuk
Theses and Dissertations
Local adaptation is characterized by higher reproductive fitness by individuals present in their native habitats relative to nonlocals. This study utilized Campanulastrum americanum as a model for assessing whether an environmental gradient can facilitate local adaptation. In particular, I determined if a latitudinal gradient across eastern United States has influenced the phenology and reproductive fitness of five northern and four southern C, americanum populations. These populations were reciprocally transplanted into two common garden sites positioned in the most northern and southern extent of the species distribution: Hastings, MI and Columbus, GA. I observed adaptive population differentiation of northern and southern …
Understanding The Structure-Function Relationships Between Monoamine Neurotransmitter Transporters And Their Cognate Ions And Ligands, Bruce Felts
Theses and Dissertations
The SLC6 family of secondary active transporters is made up of integral membrane solute carrier proteins characterized by the Na+-dependent translocation of small amino acid or amino acid-like substrates. SLC6 transporters, particularly the monoamine transporters (MATs) of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, are some of the most heavily studied proteins today due to their association with a number of human diseases and disorders, making MATs a critical target for therapeutic development. In addition, MATs are directly involved in the action of drugs of abuse such as cocaine, amphetamines, and ecstasy.
Following the first cloning of a MAT gene in the early …

Using Music-Based Interventions With Adolescents Coping With Family Conflict Or Parental Divorce: A Resource Manual, Lori Meono
Theses and Dissertations
Listening to music is an activity that provides a range of physical and psychological benefits (e.g., tension relief, decreased depression) for people across cultures and age groups. Adolescents, specifically, are among the most active consumers of music, and music appears to be a natural coping strategy for this age group. Research suggests that both music and the family context play important roles during the developmental phase of adolescence. Family transitions such as divorce have become increasingly common experiences for adolescents and may have long-lasting negative effects on an adolescent's emotional well-being. However, research regarding music-based interventions for use with adolescents …

The Power Of Play In Developing Emotional Intelligence Impacting Leadership Success: A Study Of The Leadership Team In A Midwest Private, Liberal Arts University, Patricia J. Hohlbein
Theses and Dissertations
Higher education leaders have a unique position of power and influence that can span generations (Clawson, 2009). Previous research discovered emotional intelligence to be the single biggest predictor of performance in the workplace and strongest driver of leadership and personal excellence (Bar-On, 1997; Brown, 2009; Goleman & Boyatzis, 2008; Zeidner, Matthews, & Roberts, 2012). Play develops sensing capabilities for teamwork, self-awareness, empathy, trust, and compassion, which inform development of emotional intelligence. Exploring the influence of play in developing emotional intelligence fills a void in existing research. This explanatory sequential mixed methods study sought to discover the power of play in …

Women In Hypermasculine Environments: An Analysis Of Gender Dynamics In The Heavy Metal Subculture, Anna Sheree Rogers
Women In Hypermasculine Environments: An Analysis Of Gender Dynamics In The Heavy Metal Subculture, Anna Sheree Rogers
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes gender dynamics in the heavy metal subculture by means of interviews with fans of this musical genre. Based on research that shows that (male) homosocial environments, denoting non-romantic social bonds among people of the same (male) sex, lead to hegemonic masculinity and the possibility of violence against women, this study focused on the heavy metal subculture from the point of view of its members’ experiences related to gender. The theoretical framework of this thesis is based on feminist theories of gender difference and its relevance for the sociology of gender. Specifically, I rely on theories of othering, …

Testing An Ecological Model Of Parent Involvement In Head Start: A Replication Study, Rebecca C. Horwitz
Theses and Dissertations
Parent involvement has been understood to elicit positive outcomes for school-age children, especially minority children and children from low socioeconomic families. Understanding the process by which parents engage in their child’s education may provide school staff with tools to develop interventions to increase parent involvement.
This investigation replicates a study that tested an ecological model of parent involvement in two Head Start programs (Waanders, 2002). Participants in the current study were 213 parents and/or caregivers of children who attended three Head Start programs in South Carolina. Two of the programs were located in a medium-sized city, while the third was …
Developing A Heterotypic Cell Culture Model To Determine Vegf Action Of Neural Stem Cell Fate Choice, Stephanie Snyder
Developing A Heterotypic Cell Culture Model To Determine Vegf Action Of Neural Stem Cell Fate Choice, Stephanie Snyder
Theses and Dissertations
Brain development requires tight cell and molecular regulation for proper neural stem cell (NSC) proliferation and differentiation. Increasing interest in NSCs has arisen due to the flexibility inherent within their proliferative capacity and their ability to generate multiple neuronal cell types. Our main focus is on the cortex, the primary integrator for higher order brain function. Cortical NSC proliferation and differentiation occur in concert with blood vessel ingression into the primitive cortex to vascularize the neuroepithelium. One potential influence derived from vascular cells is Vascular endothelial growth factor A (Vegf). Vegf has the ability to regulate both neurogenesis and angiogenesis …

Syntheses And Characterization Of Bis(Amino)Cyclodiphosphazane Complexes Of Group 4- And -15 Elements, Mathew Etang Otang
Theses and Dissertations
In the first part of this work, the interaction of sodium tert-butoxide and sulfur with Group 4 metal bis(tert-butylamido)cyclodiphosph(III)azanes dichlorides, {[tBuNP)2tBuN)2]MCl2}, where M is Zr or Hf, is reported. The reaction of two equivalents of NaOtBu with {[tBuNP)2tBuN)2]MCl2}, M = Zr, Hf, resulted in the isolation of the first metal alkoxide complexes {[tBuNP)2tBuN)2]M(OtBu)2}, 35 (M =Zr) and 36 (M = Hf) of cyclodiphosphazanes. The oxidation of compounds 35 and 36 with elemental sulfur yielded {[tBuNP=S)2tBuN)2]M(OtBu)2}, 37 (M = Zr) and 38 (M = Hf), respectively. Similarly, the oxidation of {[tBuNP)2tBuN)2]MCl2}, M = Zr, Hf, with elemental sulfur led to the …

High-Content Screening In Zebrafish Embryos Identifies Abamectin As A Potent Neurotoxicant, Tara Diane Raftery
Theses and Dissertations
During development, the nervous system is a sensitive target for chemical exposure in both humans and animal models, and early life-stage exposures can lead to long-term effects on motor activity, sensory function, and cognition. Currently, there are minimal to no developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) data available for thousands of chemicals used in commerce, and it is impractical to screen these chemicals in rodent models using the existing DNT test guideline, as this test is costly, time- and animalintensive, and low-throughput. Therefore, there is a recognized need to use alternative non-mammalian models to support screening and prioritization of chemicals for DNT testing, …
The Social Determinants Of Success: The Effect Of Status, Framing, And Group Membership On Test Scores, Jennifer L. Mcleer
The Social Determinants Of Success: The Effect Of Status, Framing, And Group Membership On Test Scores, Jennifer L. Mcleer
Theses and Dissertations
Previous findings have shown that intelligence test scores of members of disadvantaged groups are negatively affected by their relative status in test situations. We explain this by assuming that lower-status actors forego benefits that normally follow from successful performance of a task if they anticipate that there are also costs associated with success. We use an integration of Status Characteristics Theory, Rational Choice Theory, Prospect Theory, and Self-Categorization Theory to argue that compared to high status individuals, those of lower status should be particularly affected by costs associated with high performance. We ran an experiment that manipulated factors such as …
A Hydrographic Climatology Of The Gulf Of St. Lawrence, Alejandro Frank
A Hydrographic Climatology Of The Gulf Of St. Lawrence, Alejandro Frank
Theses and Dissertations
The Gulf of St. Lawrence (GSL) is characterized by a general circulation of an estuarine type, where fresher/lighter water flows seaward above saltier/heavier water flowing landward. In an estuarine regime, the inflowing deep layer water compensate for a loss of mass due to the surface layer outflow. A major element of the GSL estuarine circulation is the coastal buoyancy-driven current fed by the St. Lawrence River discharge. In addition, some surface water is advected into the GSL as a branch of the Labrador Current (LC). Recent climatological changes in the North Atlantic have increased the melting rate of the Greenland …
Graphene Based Heterojunctions For Nano-Electronic And Sensing Applications, Md A. Uddin
Graphene Based Heterojunctions For Nano-Electronic And Sensing Applications, Md A. Uddin
Theses and Dissertations
Graphene, an atomically thin and semi-metallic two dimensional material, has been extensively researched over the past decade due to its superior intrinsic carrier velocity, electrical and chemically tunable work function, ability to form layered heterostructure with other materials, and relevant potential applications in electronics, sensing, optoelectronics, energy storage, etc. However, the confinement of charge carriers within one atomic layer results in an electrical transport that is extremely sensitive to the surrounding environment, which is beneficial for sensing applications, but at times unfavorable for electronic applications due to scattering from extrinsic impurities. In addition, due to its rather delicate structure, engineering …
Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Pseudomorphic And Quasi-Pseudomorphic Algan Based Deep Ultraviolet Light Emitting Diodes Over Sapphire, Fatima Asif
Theses and Dissertations
III-Nitride based deep ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LEDs) emitting below 280nm has the potential to replace mercury lamps currently used in the systems for water/air purification, germicidal and medical instruments sterilization applications. However, this potential has not yet been fully realized as the output power, quantum efficiency and lifetime of deep UV-LEDs have been limited by the large number of dislocations in the active region of the devices, arising from the lattice mismatched sapphire substrate, which has been the substrate of choice due to its high transparency to deep UV radiation. To reduce dislocations in the active region of …

Effects Of Tgf-Β1 And Il-33 On Mast Cell Function, Victor S. Ndaw
Theses and Dissertations
TGFβ is involved in many pathological conditions, including autoimmune disorders, cancer, and cardiovascular and allergic diseases. We have previously found that TGFβ can suppress IgE-mediated mast cell activation in human and mouse mast cells in vitro. IL-33 is a recently discovered member of the IL-1 family capable of inducing mast cell responses and enhancing IgE-mediated activation. In this study, we investigated the effects of TGFβ on IL-33-mediated mast cell activation. Bone marrow-derived mast cells cultured in TGFβ -1, -2, or -3 showed reduced IL-33-mediated production of TNF, IL-6, IL-13 and MCP-1, in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, TGFβ also reduced …
Race & Non-Racial Characteristics In Sentencing Length And Sentencing Type Disparity, Davis A. Estes
Race & Non-Racial Characteristics In Sentencing Length And Sentencing Type Disparity, Davis A. Estes
Theses and Dissertations
Utilizing data from the United States Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities (SISCF) 2004, this research investigates the possibility that African American drug offenders receive lengthier prison sentences and are imposed more range of time or indeterminate sentences as opposed to flat sentences based on race and/or non-racial characteristics; specifically parole status prior to sentencing, plea agreement status, prior criminal history, education status prior to arrest, employment status prior to arrest, and parental incarceration. While regression analysis revealed racial sentencing disparity for length of sentence and type of sentence (p< .05 and p< .001 respectively), among non-racial characteristics, only education status prior to arrest proved a significant predictor for length of sentence (p≤ .001). African American drug offenders were more likely sentenced to indeterminate sentences as opposed to flat sentences and were less likely to receive short sentences of 0 to 4 years or medium sentences of 4 to 10 years as compared to long sentences of 10 or more years. Potential research implications include the necessity for additional research regarding racial sentencing disparity as length or type of sentences as opposed to disparity as a numerical or a percentage difference between racial groups as well as the utilizing of inmate data that encompasses recent changes in drug sentencing laws, e.g. crack cocaine versus powder cocaine. Future research might also consider the evolution of marijuana laws in the United States and the potential impact on racial sentencing disparity.

Music Preference And Its Effects On Emotion Processes And Identity Development In Young Adult Females: An Examination Of The "Emo" Subculture, Marta Orozco
Theses and Dissertations
Average daily listening hours and annual sales figures give testament to the important position that music holds in the personal and social lives of individuals in contemporary cultures (Arnett, 1991; North, Hargreaves, & O’Neill, 2000; Schwartz & Fouts, 2003; Ter Bogt, Raaijmakers, Vollebergh, van Well, & Sikkema, 2003). Youth, especially, dedicate considerable amounts of time and money to music listening (Roberts, Henriksen, & Foehr, 2009). However, it has been suggested that certain music preferences and music subcultures are associated with problem behaviors and/or internalizing distress in youth, particularly females (Miranda & Claes, 2008, 2009; Selfhout, Delsing, Ter Bogt, & Meeus, …
