Although the literature on alcoholism is extensive, virtually all of the existing psychological theories of alcoholism are based on research primarily conducted on White males. The question of generalizability of these research findings to females and to other ethnic groups, such as Native Americans, is one of paramount importance. The present study was designed to investigate differences between the sexes and between the White and Native American groups, by analysis of the MMPI profiles of each group.

This thesis discusses the questions of what happens to the value systems of those who leave their culture for extended periods of time, do the perceptions of value systems become more accurate after exposure, and how does religiosity affect value systems.

Attitudes Toward Rape And Recovery From Sexual Assault, Lynn White Eggers

In order to understand more fully the process of recovery from sexual assault, this study investigated the variables considered to be influential in that process, including the age of the victim, her marital status, the time elapsed since the assault, who the perpetrator was, and where the assault took place. In addition, the victim's beliefs about sexual assault were also assessed, using the Feminist Attitude Toward Rape Scale, as were her perceptions of society's beliefs. Recovery was evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory, the Modified Fear Survey, and the Derogatis Symptom Check List.

The literature on Weiner's (1979) model of attribution, attribution tendencies of therapists and clients, and the Barnum effect was discussed and integrated. An experiment was conducted in which the Barnum effect was investigated as a function of attribution. Subjects took a battery of personality tests that was composed of measures which previous research has related to the Barnum effect or to attributional styles. Later, subjects received handwritten personality interpretations, purportedly based on their test results and supposedly derived by a clinical psychologist. The genetics and development of 5 embryo-lethal maize mutants defective in early embryogenesis were studied by genetic, histological, ultrastructural, and tissue culture techniques. The mutants examined were cp*-E1113A (dek22) on 1L, dcr*-E1428 (dek23) on 2L, rgh*-E1210, fl*-E1253B, and cp*-E1399A. They were found to be non-allelic. Long term studies of chromosome arm location by the Twaxy translocation stocks and mapping of cp*-E1113A and dcr*-E1428 with multiple linkage marker stocks were initiated. Three mutants lacked leaf primordia at kernel maturity, while two made leaf primordia but were unable to germinate. Embryos of cp*-E1113A became blocked at the transition stage but remained morphologically …

Environmental perceptions and psychological characteristics of American Indian students were studied to assess the impact of the higher education environment on their psychological development. The sample consisted of high school seniors and university students from freshmen to graduate levels. Each participant responded to a biographical questionnaire, the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and the College University Environment Scales II (CUES II).The responses were analyzed in terms of research questions designed to address (1) the relationship between the psychological and environmental domains, (2) student progress in higher education, (3) the prediction of academic achievement, and (4) differences between males and females and …

There is contradictory evidence as to whether the middle years are problematic for women. The research indicates that the middle years, particularly the empty nest period, are traumatic for some women, but for others a time of relief. More recent research suggests that for women who do find the middle years problematic, certain types of group experiences may be helpful. This study attempted to measure mental health status of Vietnamese refugees in Utah County, Utah. The test instrument used was the Cornell Medical Index (CMI). Two subproblems were considered: First, to see if refugee complaints on the CMI were predominantly physiological or psychological. Second, to see if there was a relationship between CMI scores and a related list of demographic variables.

Results showed the mean CMI score for the sample under study was well above the suggested score indicative of possible psychological dysfunction. For 80% of participants, psychological complaints were predominant over physical complaints. The only variables showing a relationship …

The major purpose of this study was to determine if participation in a life career planning course would significantly increase participants' self-esteem and career maturity and change participants' sex-role stereotypes, as measured by Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, the Texas Social Behavior Inventory, the Career Maturity Inventory, and the Personal Attributes Questionnaire. Another purpose of the study was to determine if self-esteem, as measured by the RSE, was positively related to a second self-esteem measure, career maturity, and sex-role stereotypes, as measured by scores on the TSBI, the CMI, and the PAQ, respectively. The present study identified specific observable and measurable behaviors in Deer group interactions that contributed to cooperation among the group members. A determination as to whether groups of children who scored high on a moral judgment measure interacted more cooperatively than groups of children who scored low on the same measure was desired. It was expected that groups of children scoring high on a test of moral judgment would exhibit more behaviors contributing to group cooperation than groups scoring low.

The purpose of this study was to determine what sociocultural, sociodemographic, and sociopsychological factors the Sisters in four Wards in the Taipei Taiwan Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints perceived as keeping them from using the health services during the period from June 1975 to May 1976.

Forty-five Sisters, age twenty-one and older, were surveyed by a written questionnaire during Relief Society meetings during the last week in June and the first week in July 1966.

One rather consistent finding from studies involving field dependence-independence is that males are more field independent, more articulated in their approach to certain perceptual tasks, than females. It appears that socialization factors and sex-role identification relate to the development of field dependence or field independence. If society plays a part in the development of individual differences in field dependency, a change in society such as the present movement toward greater equality in sex roles could possibly influence sex differences in field dependency. Biochemical Parameters Of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia In Mice, Trent D. Stephens

Cartilage from newborn mice homozygous for chondrodysplasia contains normal quantities of protein and chondroitin sulfate. Mutant fetal cartilage incorporates normal amounts of sulfate, glucose, and glucosamine. Overnight rinsing with water removes about 25% of the incorporated sulfur and existing uronic acid from mutant ribs and about 55% from mutant limbs. Control ribs and limbs are affected very little by such a rinse. The diffusability of chondroitin sulfate (represented by incorporated sulfur and uronic acid) may be due to a lack of covalent bond formation between chondroitin sulfate and collagen.

Caryopses of wheat were studied during infection by Tilletia caries and T. controversa. Initially the pathogens penetrated embryos of the host. After the embryo tissue was consumed by the fungi, endosperm tissue was penetrated and consumed. Initial penetration of endosperm tissue was in localized areas. During infection the fungus mycelium spread intercellularly, but occasionally was seen intracellularly. As the host tissue was consumed teliospores were formed. At maturity a host cell layer 4-6 cells thick remained which retained the mature teliospores. Histochemical studies indicated that carbohydrates and lipids of the host disappeared soon after invasion by the pathogens. Nuclei and …

The study attempted to clarify the relationships between expressed attitude and observed teacher behavior. The purpose was to find positive ways of causing educators to incorporate cognitive and affective processes into their educational activities. At the same time, ways of meeting student needs in a confluent setting were sought.

The review of the literature provided relevant information already available through the efforts of other researchers. A multidiscipline approach in this review resulted in several conclusions:

1. Certain bio-self needs result in feelings that cause behavior.

Genetic control of decapitation-induced fission in planaria is mediated by stimulator and inhibitor molecules. Resolution of the two factors was accomplished by filtration chromatography of whole planaria extract. The stimulator (M.W. 2500 to 3500) was purified with ion exchange chromatography and increases the multiple fission rate. The inhibitor (M.W. 20,000 to 50,000) is non-dialyzable, heat labile and is inactivated unless kept frozen. Storage at 4°C results in a loss of inhibitory capacity with a concomitant stimulator increase, suggesting a protein-stimulator complex as the inhibitor. In light of a demonstrated animal intercommunication system, the inhibitor-stimulator complex is hypothesized as part of …
