An Investigation Of What Relationships Exist Between A Child's Performance Of Selected Tasks Of Conservation And Selected Factors In Reading Readiness, Beverly W. Brekke May 1971

An Investigation Of What Relationships Exist Between A Child's Performance Of Selected Tasks Of Conservation And Selected Factors In Reading Readiness, Beverly W. Brekke

Theses and Dissertations

Problem: The purpose of this study was to determine what relationships exist between a child's performance of selected tasks of conservation and selected factors in reading readiness. Comparisons were also made between conservation and reading readiness to selected variables such as mental age, sex, chronological age, and teacher prediction.

Procedure: The research population for this study was comprised of 81 first grade subjects enrolled in four classrooms of the Grand Forks Public Schools during the 1970-1971 school year. The students were selected to be representative of the total Grand Forks, North Dakota school population. Due to changes in school populations …

Characterization Of Deoxyribonucleic Acid From Actinomycetes, Lynn William Enquist Jan 1971

Characterization Of Deoxyribonucleic Acid From Actinomycetes, Lynn William Enquist

Theses and Dissertations

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analyses were used to assess on a molecular level, the relationships among representatives of the genera Streptomyces, Nocardia and Mycobacterium. The methods developed in this study have been used for routine analysis of DNA from a large number of actinomycetes and have given reliable and reproducible data.

DNA isolated from various actinomycetes was characterized by buoyant density determinations in CsCl from which the mole fraction guanine plus cytosine (GC) content was calculated. All the streptomycete DNA preparations studied had buoyant densities in the range of 1.7287 to 1.7312 g cm-3 which corresponded to GC compositions of …

An Exploratory Study Of Holland's Theory Of Vocational Choice And Rotter's Social Learning Theory, James A. Foster Jun 1970

An Exploratory Study Of Holland's Theory Of Vocational Choice And Rotter's Social Learning Theory, James A. Foster

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between Holland's theory of vocational choice and Rotter's social learning theory. More specifically, it was aimed at examining the interplay between internal-external locus of control and consistent and inconsistent vocational patterns to determine whether the apparent differences between personality theory and vocational choice theory could be reduced.

Subjects: The subjects were 493 freshmen males who entered the University of North Dakota during the Summer or Fall of 1967, participated in the Orientation Program, and completed one semester of course work. In accordance with the experimental design 474 subjects of …

Ultrastructural Investigations Of Tilletia Caries Teliospores, James Vincent Allen Aug 1969

Ultrastructural Investigations Of Tilletia Caries Teliospores, James Vincent Allen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ultrastructure of Tilletia caries teliospores. Specimens were prepared for viewing in the electron microscope by freeze-etching and thin-sectioning techniques. Thin-sectioning techniques gave excellent results with the teliospore walls and the lipid bodies within the teliospore but failed to adequately fix the membranes and internal organelle systems. Micrographs of Tilletia caries teliospores prepared using thin-sectioning show three major wall layers and two partition wall layers and abundant lipid bodies. The freeze-etch method of spore preparation proved superior to the thin-sectioning used in this study to reveal the internal organelle systems of the …

The Relation Of Selected Academic, Biographical And Personality Factors To The Achievement Of Canadian College Freshmen, Calvin W. Vraa

Theses and Dissertations

Problem: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of several selected variables to the first year undergraduate grade point average of Canadian inale freshmen enrolled at the University of North Dakota during the 1967-1968 academic year.

Procedure: The subjects used in this study were 59 Canadian male freshmen who were enrolled in the University of North Dakota in the Fall of 1967. The subjects were randomly selected from the total Canadian male freshmen population.

The instruments used in this study were the American College Test, The Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior, the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Feelings, and a …

An Ecologic Study Of An Overloaded Oxidation Lagoon Containing High Populations Of Purple Sulfur Bacteria, Harvey W. Holm Jan 1969

An Ecologic Study Of An Overloaded Oxidation Lagoon Containing High Populations Of Purple Sulfur Bacteria, Harvey W. Holm

Theses and Dissertations

Concomitant with the addition of large amounts of potato starch wastes to the Grafton, North Dakota, municipal sewage lagoon was the development of a new major microbial population, the purple sulfur bacteria. This study attempts to define ecologic relationships of the lagoon, with special emphasis placed on the action of purple sulfur bacteria in the lagoon.

Chemical changes in the lagoon were investigated by monitoring Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), sulfide, sulfate, phosphate, pyruvate, total carbohydrates, volatile acids, alkalinity, and pH. Lagoon water temperatures were observed daily. Microbial ecologic relationships were deduced by enumerating coliforms, fecal conforms, enterococci, total bacteria (TGE …

A Study Of Moral Development In Mormon Culture, Steve Foster Gilliland Jan 1966

A Study Of Moral Development In Mormon Culture, Steve Foster Gilliland

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have indicated that the moral development of the child may follow a "developmental" process. That is, the child progresses through an invariant series of stages, each characterized by certain modes of thought. As the child passes from one stage to another, he integrates the old stage into the new one. Kohlberg proposed a hierarchy of six stages through which the child would progress on his way to moral maturity. His hypothesis has been supported by empirical evidence.

Research findings have indicated that the Mormon culture appeared to be different in values and moral behavior than other United States …

Cytological Evidence For Reciprocal Introgression In Agropyron Trachycaulum And Agropyron Spicatum, Laval M. Pitts

Theses and Dissertations

Agropyron trachycaulum (Link) Malte and Agropyron spicatum Pursh, both native range grasses of the Great Basin, often hybridize in nature. A. trachycaulum, is a tetraploid with 28 chromosomes. It has awnless or awntipped lemmas and small anthers. A. spicatum is a diplois with 14 chromosomes. It is characterized by having long awn that bend at maturity, and anthers which are about four times longer than A. trachycaulum. Artificial hybrids are intermediate between parents in awn and anther lengths and have 21 chromosomes. A natural population in Utah was found consisting of A. trachycaulum, A. spicatum, plants resembling the artificial hybrids, …

A Study Of The Effects Of Different Substrates On Growth And Reproduction In Certain Coprophilic Agaricaceae, Raymond C. Brown Dec 1960

A Study Of The Effects Of Different Substrates On Growth And Reproduction In Certain Coprophilic Agaricaceae, Raymond C. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Psilocybe mutans sp. nov. had ceased fruiting consistently in artificial culture several years prior to the initiation of this study. In the couse of this study fruiting bodies were produced on a number of different substrates. All cultures were inoculated by mycelial transfer or by spraying with a suspension of pre-germinated spores. All cultrues were incubated for one to two weeks in a constant-temperature room at 70°F. on a shelf fourteen inches below a fluorescent lighting fixture. Lighting was continuous with an intensity at shelf level of approximately 3,000 foot-candles. Fruiting on any particular substrate was improved if the substrate …
