The Effect Of Biculturalism On Self-Esteem In Northern Plains Native American College Students, Mary J. Wilkie

The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of biculturalism on self esteem in a sample of 51 Northern Plains Native American college students (29 females, 22 males). Subjects completed the Northern Plains Biculturalism Inventory (NPB1; Allen & French, 1994) and the Index of Self-Esteem (ISE; Hudson, 1982). Pearson Product- Moment correlations, independent t-tests, a multiple regression analysis, and an one-way analysis-of-variance was performed using the SPSS statistical package to examine, if any, the relationships between the NPBI subscales and the ISE total scores. The purpose of this study was to examine the educational values convergence and disparity of parents and educators in an American Indian community. It assumes that any effective educational reform is based on community values. The effects of exposure to a post-secondary educational environment on attitudes and values was assessed utilizing a cross-sectional research design. Four hundred sixty-two participants completed the Schwartz Value Survey and a social distance scale. Of these, 56 were first and second year undergraduates, 57 were third and fourth year undergraduates, 85 were masters level graduate students, 77 were doctoral level graduate students, 96 were non-tenured faculty and 91 were tenured faculty. It was hypothesized that students and entry level faculty would undergo a socialization processes which would include changes in attitudes and values consistent with established tenured faculty. The effects of three conditions of vocabulary presentation were examined to determine which method is optimal for vocabulary acquisition of the meanings of unfamiliar words in elementary school students. The design of this study was similar to that used by A. Brett, L. Rothlein, and M. Hurley (1996). The purpose of this research was to determine how much of the variance in birthweight can be explained by socio-economic status and utilization of prenatal care in Blacks and Whites. Rather than defining race in genetic terms, race was understood here as a social construction. The methodological approach was an analysis of the National Survey of Family Growth Cycle IV, 1988. The first, singleton, live birth for each interviewed woman was included, resulting in a sample of 911 women, of whom 313 were Black women and 598 White women.

The purpose of this study was to better understand the kindergarten experiences of four Hispanic children, with and without previously diagnosed disabilities, in a predominantly Mainstream American public school in the Upper Midwest. The children's initial school experiences as well as their later adjustments to the Euro-American school were studied from the first day of the school year to the end of the first quarter of school (nine weeks later).

The purpose of this study was to examine trends in moral orientation among law students at a small midwestern law school. A second purpose was to examine self-silencing of moral perspective in these law students. Moral orientation was assessed at the onset of the participants' legal study (Time 1) and at the end of their second academic year (Time 2) using the Relationship Self Inventory. Self-silencing was assessed at Time 2 only, using the Silencing the Self Scale.Results provide some support for gender difference in moral orientation. Subjects completed a series of questionnaires as a means to obtain symptoms experienced across three phases of the cycle (menstrual, premenstrual, and intermenstrual). The questionnaires completed included the Demographic Data Questionnaire, the Moos' Menstrual Distress Questionnaire, the Depression Adjective Check List (Forms A and D), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Forms Y-1 and Y-2), and Index Cards for two consecutive months. There were nintey-nine (99) subjects: forty-seven (47) Caucasian American adolescents and fifty-two (52) Chippewa Native American adolescents. RAhq is an experiment in script creation. The intent of the work was to craft a script from research and rehearsals which would reflect the personalities of all involved. After initial research and preliminary scripting, the cast and writer/director worked together to develop scenes and characters collaboratively. The initial script was then altered to incorporate the work from rehearsals. The final script was given full production. The process was evaluated by cast, selected respondents and the writer. Recent studies have shown that a number of researchers have turned to the concept of the interpretive community to explain how audiences interpret the media within the context of their everyday experiences (Biocca, 1989; Gunter, 1989; Lindlof, 1989, 1992; Radway, 1984; Schrøder, 1994). D. A. Stout (1993) conducted a study that discovered three interpretive communities among LDS women who watch television, establishing that interpretive communities do exist among religious media audiences.

In 1994, K. Schrøder showed that the interpretive community can be further understood by taking a "social semiotic" approach to analyzing interpretive community members' social interaction with other communities. …

Pratt is comparable to other works now included in the canon of American autobiography such as Jonathan Edward's "Personal Narrative," Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography and Henry David Thoreau's Walden. Sense of Coherence (SOC) is a personality characteristic which has been linked to mental and physical health. However, the factors that contribute to this link are, as yet, unclear. Our understanding of the link between personality and health may be improved by examining how personality characteristics manifest in specific circumstances (i.e., how they affect perceptions and judgments). The knowledge gained through the depressive realism research (which has looked at personality differences by examining their effect on perceptions and judgments in specific, controlled circumstances) was applied to SOC theory in an attempt to further clarify how SOC may influence our judgments. …

One variable which appears to positively influence psychotherapy outcome is the "therapeutic alliance," or the establishment of a positive working relationship between client and counselor. To better understand the mechanisms governing the proliferation of cardiac myocytes it is important to identify the factors controlling this phenomenon, and to characterize their actions. The ventricular myocyte from the adult newt, Notophthalmus viridescens, is well suited to this type of study, due to its large chromosomes, ease of culture maintenance, and ability to undergo mitosis with cytokinesis. DNA synthesis was quantified in vitro in myocytes treated with platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-$\beta$), fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), heparin, or conditioned medium from ventricular myocytes or nonmyocytes (primarily endothelial cells). The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the recently introduced (DSM-III-R) Self-defeating Personality Disorder (SDPD) at the construct level. The trait structure of the construct and possible gender biases were analyzed. For purposes of construct investigation, a model addressing certain processes of human judgment was used. This model consisted of a trait inferencing method and three parameters: (1) consensual accuracy, (2) threshold, and (3) salience. The purpose of this study was to determine the consequences to emotionally disturbed elementary school girls of being in the minority in self-contained classes for emotionally disturbed children. This study was conducted in MISII (Modified Instructional Service II) classes, primarily for the emotionally disturbed, in the New York City Public Schools. The ratio of boys to girls was 6.5 to 1. The intent of this study was to examine the effects of viewing domestic discord on cognitive mapping in a home-like environment. Subjects' level of arousal was manipulated by having them watch a videotape containing scenes of domestic violence before they completed a cognitive mapping task in a furnished, two-bedroom apartment. In an attempt to prolong the effect of videotape content, subjects were exposed to white noise while they completed the cognitive mapping task. The inclusion of control conditions, along with the two arousal factors (videotape content and noise), resulted in four experimental groups.Forty female subjects watched one of the videotapes …

The molecule(s) involved at the axon plasma membrane (axolemma) which causes Schwann cells to proliferate has been investigated by three biochemical techniques: 1) Alkaline extraction of axolemma resulted in recovery of 95% of the mitogenic activity and 50% of the protein in the membrane-bound portion of the axolemma. 2) The axonal mitogen for Schwann cells may be associated with heparan sulfate proteoglycans at the axonal surface. Treatment of axolemma with heparitinase, which cleaves the glycosidic bonds of sulfated glycosaminoglycans, allowed mitogenic activity to be solubilized. 3) Treatment of axolemma with heparin, a highly sulfated glycosaminoglycan analogous to heparan sulfate, resulted …
