Voluven For Treatment Of Hypovolemia In Anesthetic Practice, Irina Son Jun 2013

Voluven For Treatment Of Hypovolemia In Anesthetic Practice, Irina Son

Theses and Dissertations

Many patients undergoing surgical procedures require intravenous fluid replacement with a colloid volume expander. It is a well-known fact that the choice of intravenous fluid therapy may impact postoperative outcomes in both positive and 4 negative ways (Topcu et al., 2012). In 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of 6% Hetastarch 130/0.4, also known as Voluven, to treat hypovolemia. This product was introduced to the anesthesia practice as a promising volume expander, carrying minimal side effects such as renal failure or coagulopathy. However, over the past few years multiple studies have been performed to test Voluven's …

Law And Other-Spaces: Legal Geographies Of The Sinai Peninsula, Tracy Allison Young Jun 2013

Law And Other-Spaces: Legal Geographies Of The Sinai Peninsula, Tracy Allison Young

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula has joined an unfortunate category of what I call ‘Outlaw spaces’: spaces that are characterized and understood as being shaped by crisis, chaos and collapse. Outlaw spaces –which include the “black holes,” the “breeding grounds,” the “security vacuums” and the “no man’s lands” that have proliferated in the post-9/11 era—are constructed through the interplay of both legal and imaginative geographies. Mapping and labeling certain zones as lawless, chaotic and dangerous is deceptive. There is nothing natural about Outlaw spaces and it is not always clear where they begin and where they end. While Outlaw …

The Right To Leisure Through Play For Refugee Children In Egypt, Carrie Leanna Johnson Jun 2013

The Right To Leisure Through Play For Refugee Children In Egypt, Carrie Leanna Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Physical health programs specifically programmed for emotional rehabilitation are an important factor in post-trauma adjustment for refugee children in Egypt. This thesis explores definitions of the Right to Leisure, which can serve as a catalyst for such post-trauma rehabilitation for refugee children. Adequate access to the right to leisure is obstructed, however due to State-wide economic weaknesses, the failed implementation and reservations to various international treaties, xenophobia and discrimination, and the vast privatization of recreation spaces. Nonetheless, Egypt has consented to sharing international responsibility to safeguard the right to leisure for refugee children per several international treaties: the Convention on …

Television Human-Puppet Talk Show: Sensationalism, Conflict And Emotional Concerns "Case Study Of Abla Fahita Live", Mary Yousry Kamel Habib

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the effect of sensationalism in human-puppet talk shows and the rate of adoption or rejection of viewers to the new innovation for Egyptian Television “Abla Fahita.” Two theories are used as a framework: diffusion of innovation theory (DOI) and cultivation theory. The study’s main hypotheses were H1: Youngesters adopt innovativeness earlier than others in their social system. H2: Audience who watch more show episode’s segments, the more they tend to adopt sensational contents spontaneously. H3: Abla Fahita human-puppet talk show’s heavy viewers tend to watch the episodes on YouTube channel than television. The primary research linked sensationalism …

Factors Affecting Elementary Teachers’ Decision To Integrate Information And Communication Technologies (Ict) In An Egyptian International School, Shaimaa Mohamed Hafez

Theses and Dissertations

Integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a desired educational outcome. Schools invest substantially in technological hardware and software as well as teacher training to encourage ICT integration. However, the results often do not match the investment. The current case study examined the factors that affect elementary teachers’ decision, in an Egyptian international school, to integrate ICT in education with the aim of using the results to inform future ICT related decisions, policies and practices at this particular school. Using a modified form of participatory evaluation (Cousins & Whitmore, 1998; Zukoski & Luluquisen, 2002) and Wagner’s and Kegan’s 4 C’s …

Jesus According To Ibn Al-’Arabī And Christian Scholars, Jeong Jae Yoo Jun 2013

Jesus According To Ibn Al-’Arabī And Christian Scholars, Jeong Jae Yoo

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the differences between Islam and Christianity, Islam is the only non-Christian religion in the world, which requires its adherents to believe that Jesus is one of the prophets of God. Ibn al-’Arabī, one of the Sufi mystics of the 12th century, wrote an entire chapter devoted to Jesus in his book, Fuṣūṣ al-ḥikam, translated as the Bezels (or Seals) of Wisdom. In this chapter, Jesus is characterized by five names that most clearly explain his attributes. These names are ‘the Spirit of God’, ‘the Word of God’, ‘the Breath of God’, ‘the Mercy of God’, and ‘the Slave of …

Unveiling (Hi)Stories: Colonial Dispossession In Emile Habiby’S. The Pessoptimist And Caryl Phillips’ Crossing The River, Mushira Salah El-Deen Sabry Jun 2013

Unveiling (Hi)Stories: Colonial Dispossession In Emile Habiby’S. The Pessoptimist And Caryl Phillips’ Crossing The River, Mushira Salah El-Deen Sabry

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the dynamics of dispossession in two (post) colonial novels: Al-waqai‘ al-ghariba fi ikhtifa’ Sa‘id abu al-nahs al-mutasha’il (1974) by the Palestinian novelist Emile Habiby (translated as The Secret Life of Saeed: The Ill-Fated Pessoptimist [1985] by Salma Khadra Jayussi and Trevor Le Gassick) and Crossing the River (1995) by West Indian novelist Caryl Phillips. Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of the “chronotope,” “carnivalesque,” and “polyphony” are used to show how the two texts avoid using “a rhetoric of blame” (Edward Said’s expression) as their objective. Rather, both novels provide the Other’s version of an event to supplement the mainstream …

Ambiguity In Literature: Recovering The Life Of Reading, Eden Unger Bowditch Jun 2013

Ambiguity In Literature: Recovering The Life Of Reading, Eden Unger Bowditch

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis contends that ambiguity in meaning performs an essential role in the reader’s response to literature. Ambiguity is not simply an incidental or marginal feature of literary texts but relates in basic ways to the reader’s experience of literature. It is the still point around which a literary text revolves. In examining the function of ambiguity in literary texts, I will show how ambiguity both defines a text as literary and allows it to live and grow through time. The notion of a text is meaningless apart from the reading of it, and, ambiguity, in the unchanging presence of …

B Is For Burka, C Is For Counterinsurgency: Us Troops Experiences Of And With Afghan Society, Sarah Cosette Jun 2013

B Is For Burka, C Is For Counterinsurgency: Us Troops Experiences Of And With Afghan Society, Sarah Cosette

Theses and Dissertations

Since 2001, members of the U.S. military and Afghan communities have been living alongside each other as part of the international political intervention and military campaign Operation Enduring Freedom. A schism occurred between Afghan societies in relation to this involvement, which in turn produced relationships between foreign troops and Afghan civilians, the state apparatus and insurgents. An international discourse of propaganda using gender as a tool surrounded the conflict and attempted to justify the presence of foreign militaries in Afghanistan by framing the U.S. as rescuers, liberating Afghan victims from Afghan oppressors. A counterinsurgency doctrine was developed after Afghanistan resisted …

This study is based on feminist theory. It uses critical textual analysis and ethnography-inspired in-depth interviews to examine the influence of Hekayat Banat on women’s expectations and perceptions of ideal couples and gender roles. The textual analysis examines seven series episodes and the title song. Results from the textual analysis suggest that the serial offered several themes that serve as advice for women, including: friendship is important in supporting one’s daily life; women should be strong and self-confident in order to eliminate being the property or under the control of men; women must find and keep men; communication and forgiveness …

Water Consumption In The Middle East And North Africa (Mena) Region: A Virtual Water Approach, Matthew Timmerman Jun 2013

Water Consumption In The Middle East And North Africa (Mena) Region: A Virtual Water Approach, Matthew Timmerman

Theses and Dissertations

As the population of the MENA region rises, virtual water import is increasing, evident by striking food import figures in many of the region's countries. This is not a new development, it has long been the case that MENA countries have used the import of high water content agricultural commodities as a mechanism for covering domestic food consumption via external water. This said, as climate induced global water scarcity and population driven global water demand increase simultaneously, the MENA region's practice of importing water via agricultural commodities should gain increasing attention. The research herein quantitatively assesses MENA nations' virtual water …

Government Regulatory Policy Towards The Biopharmaceutical Sector: Regulatory Outlook On Biosimilars In Egypt., Mohamed Atef Abdelhakim Farag Jun 2013

Structural Basis Of Dna Binding Complexes, Ninad Walavalkar May 2013

Structural Basis Of Dna Binding Complexes, Ninad Walavalkar

Theses and Dissertations

The nucleosome remodeling and deacetylase (NuRD) complex is an abundant deacetylase complex, which couples histone deacetylation and chromatin remodeling ATPase activities, and has a broad cellular and tissue distribution. Although the working model of how this complex forms and functions is not well known, we have demonstrated that the coiled-coil interaction between two proteins (MBD2 and p66α) is critical for DNA methylation dependent gene silencing in vivo. Chapter one: ‘Unique features of the anti-parallel, heterodimeric coiled-coil interaction between methyl-cytosine binding domain 2 (MBD2) homologues and p66α dictate high affinity binding’ describes this unique coiled coil interaction. Coiled-coils were studied using …

Mommy Blogs And Rhetoric: Reading Experiences That Shape Maternal Identities, Brighton Joan Capua May 2013

Mommy Blogs And Rhetoric: Reading Experiences That Shape Maternal Identities, Brighton Joan Capua

Theses and Dissertations

The transition to motherhood is difficult and jarring for many women. Not only does this transition demand life-altering changes to a woman's life, but especially in more recent times, this transition offers nothing but uncertainty. As the role and understanding of women continues to change, what motherhood means becomes increasingly difficult to define; additionally, the traditional narratives of stay-at-home mothers who are always happy to do housework and nurture their children no longer apply for many 21st-century women, leaving new mothers feeling uncertain about who they are and who they want to become. Since the turn of the century, mothers …

Evaluating The Safety Effects Of Signal Improvements, Ashley Lynn Dowell May 2013

Evaluating The Safety Effects Of Signal Improvements, Ashley Lynn Dowell

Theses and Dissertations

As a result of high crash frequencies on roadways, transportation safety has become a high priority for the United States Department of Transportation and the Utah Department of Transportation. A large percentage of fatal and injury crashes on roadways occur at intersections and traffic signals have been implemented to reduce these severe crashes. There is a need to evaluate the effectiveness of the traffic signal improvements through the development of Crash Modification Factors (CMFs). Recent research has shown that traditional safety evaluation methods have been inadequate in developing CMFs. In recent years, Bayesian statistical methods have been utilized in traffic …

Intra-Mitochondrial Injury During Ischemia-Reperfusion, Hema Aluri May 2013

Intra-Mitochondrial Injury During Ischemia-Reperfusion, Hema Aluri

Theses and Dissertations

Cardiac injury is increased following ischemia-reperfusion. Mitochondria are the “effector organelles” that are damaged during ischemia (ISC) when there is no blood flow. Resumption of metabolism by damaged mitochondria during reperfusion (REP) results in increased cell injury. Current therapeutic interventions to pre-condition and post-condition the heart during ISC are ineffective during certain conditions like aging and diabetes due to defects in the signaling cascades. In contrast, mitochondrial-based strategies are effective in protecting the heart during ISC-REP. Hence direct therapeutic targeting of dysfunctional mitochondria will provide the potential to bypass the upstream signaling defects and intervene directly upon the effector organelle. …

Isolation, Characterization And Synthesis Of Asthma Inducing Fungal Glycolipid And Analytical Method Development For Novel Antimicrobial Peptide Mimics, Vinod Chaudhary May 2013

Isolation, Characterization And Synthesis Of Asthma Inducing Fungal Glycolipid And Analytical Method Development For Novel Antimicrobial Peptide Mimics, Vinod Chaudhary

Theses and Dissertations

NKT cells are an important part of human immune system and recognize a specific set of antigens called glycolipids. Only a handful of "natural" NKT cell antigens are known till date. Although NKT cells play a protective role against pathogenic organisms, imbalances in NKT cell functions are implicated in many diseases including asthma. Allergic asthma, a Th2 driven inflammation of airways, is primarily caused by inhalation of environmental allergens. In the last decade, inhaled allergen Aspergillus fumigatus has been under scrutiny for the presence of NKT cell antigens that might trigger asthma. We successfully isolated, characterized and synthesized a "natural" …

Synthesis And Immunological Evaluation Of Type I, Type Ii, And Gamma Delta Nkt Cell Antigens, Brian L. Anderson May 2013

Synthesis And Immunological Evaluation Of Type I, Type Ii, And Gamma Delta Nkt Cell Antigens, Brian L. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the immune system is to protect our bodies from infection. One way it accomplishes this task is through the presentation of foreign pathogens to NKT cells. After an antigen is presented to the T cell receptor, activated NKT cells quickly release soluble chemical signals, termed chemokines and cytokines, that modulate the response of the immune system. Due to the immunological relevance of NKT cell activation, we developed and synthesised non-natural analogs of immunostimulatory type I, II, and gamma delta NKT cell antigens. The immunological evaluations of these analogs resulted in identification of sulfatide as a gamma delta …

The State Of The Research: Meta-Analysis And Conceptual Critique Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Ryan Lance Nelson May 2013

The State Of The Research: Meta-Analysis And Conceptual Critique Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Ryan Lance Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers studying the long-term cognitive sequelae of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) have produced disparate results. Some studies have shown little to no long-term cognitive effects while others have shown that persistent cognitive sequelae continue to affect a subgroup of patients. Meta-analysis has been used to try to integrate these contrasting results to foster a coherent understanding of the cognitive outcomes following mTBI. However, previous meta-analyses of long-term cognitive sequelae have used studies from a period of mTBI research where methodological rigor has been called into question (Carroll, Cassidy, Holm, Kraus, & Coronado, 2004). Using studies from this period, meta-analysts …

Possible Causes Of Testicular Germ Cell Tumor And Its Association With Male Infertility, Wael Ahmed Badran May 2013

Possible Causes Of Testicular Germ Cell Tumor And Its Association With Male Infertility, Wael Ahmed Badran

Theses and Dissertations

Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) are thought to arise during early embryogenesis due to the arrest of germ cell differentiation at primordial germ cells (PGCs) or gonocytes. Oxidative stress (OS) is implicated in cancer development as a factor leading to DNA damage. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) -induced instability occurs as a series of progressive steps. The cell has several defense mechanisms against the deleterious effect of ROS (e.g. antioxidants and DNA repair). When the defense mechanisms are exhausted by increasing OS, DNA damage leads to genomic instability with subsequent mutations that can be transmitted during cell division. On the other …

More than ten Salmonella serotypes were isolated from catfish and catfish products, such as live, chilled fillets, frozen fillets, and conveyor belts in catfish processing facilities. The isolates that were recovered include Salmonella ser. Typhimurium, Barranquilla, Mbadaka, …

Sperm Proteins And Chromatin Dynamics Associated With Male Fertility, Sule Dogan May 2013

Sperm Proteins And Chromatin Dynamics Associated With Male Fertility, Sule Dogan

Theses and Dissertations

The impacts of the paternal genome and proteins transferred to the oocyte through spermatozoa cannot be neglected during mammalian embryonic development. Studies over the past 40 years suggest that sperm chromatin alterations (such as DNA fragmentation induced by either chromatin condensation errors, apoptosis and/or oxidative stress) might be negatively associated with fertilization and early embryonic development [1, 2], [3] [4].However, precise molecular mechanisms by which sperm chromatin integrity and sperm proteins impact early embryonic development still remain unclear. Therefore, the objectives of this study were 1) determine DNA fragmentation induced by apoptosis its relationship with male fertility in spermatozoa from …

This is an exploration of the effects of the press on British and German foreign policy between 1876 and 1906. The dissertation considers the growing influence of the press on Anglo-German relations. Historians have provided discussions of how domestic presses can affect their home governments. This dissertation adds to that by analyzing the consequences of the debates between the British and German presses on their governments’ foreign policy. The possibility for Anglo-German cooperation during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries receives significant interest due to debates regarding the origins of World War I. The reasons put forth by historians …

Expression Of Dna-Damage Response Genes In Cells Affected By Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Andrea Rodgers Jones May 2013

Expression Of Dna-Damage Response Genes In Cells Affected By Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Andrea Rodgers Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Proper regulation of apoptosis during pneumococcal pneumonia is essential for resolution of infection. We hypothesized that reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during infection causes sufficient DNA damage to alter expression of pro-apoptotic proteins. Despite inducing DNA damage, challenge with pneumococci did not cause alterations the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein Puma (p53 up-modulated regulator of apoptosis) at early (4 and 6 hour) and late (16 and 24 hour) time points tested in this study. Puma-dependent global expression patterns were assessed, and the data demonstrated significant changes in expression of various genes (Prdx2, Ripk1, Api5 and IL-10) involved in cell death …
