Light Microscopy Of Peripheral Nerve Adequately Fixed For Electron Microscopy, Leonard L. Gunderson Aug 1966

Light Microscopy Of Peripheral Nerve Adequately Fixed For Electron Microscopy, Leonard L. Gunderson

Theses and Dissertations

Electron microscopy has settled prior controversies regarding the relationship of axon, myelin and Schwann cell bat doubt remains about the correct interpretation of the classic binding sheaths. Perineurium is customarily interpreted to be flattened fibroblasts but recent evidence suggests attenuated Schwann cells. This study attempts to reinterpret the morphology of peripheral nerve known to be fixed adequately for fine structure. Special emphasis is placed on the binding sheaths, especially perineurium.

Forty white rats were perfused with buffered aldehydes. Sural and sciatic nerves were removed. Smaller nerves were obtained with orbital contents and the loose connective tissue of spleen and pancreas. …

Small Mammal Invasion Of A Trapped-Out Habitat, Lester Dennis Flake Aug 1966

Small Mammal Invasion Of A Trapped-Out Habitat, Lester Dennis Flake

Theses and Dissertations

Small mammals, with their numerous adaptations, have successfully inhabited most biotic communities. Interactions arising from competition among small mammals in these communities may lead to a rather complex social organization with poorly defined boundaries which limit the movement of individuals. Important among these are territorial boundaries sometimes established by small mammals to protect all or part of their home range.

An Ecological Life History Of Budsage In Western Utah, Benjamin W. Wood

Theses and Dissertations

The ecological life history of budsage (Artemisia spinescens D.C. Eaton) was investigated during 1963 and 1964. The field studies were conducted at the Desert Experimental Range in Millard County, Utah. Laboratory studies were done at Brigham Young University. The different community types in which budsage grows were described and the physical site factors, viz. climate, soil texture, total soluble salts, hydrogen ion concentration of the soil, carbonate content and soil moisture were investigated. Phenology of seedlings, root systems, shoot and flower development, and plant longevity were investigated. Studies were also made on the effects of different seasons and intensities of …

High Temperature Tolerances Of Anuran Amphibians, Russell A. Dean Jun 1966

High Temperature Tolerances Of Anuran Amphibians, Russell A. Dean

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to obtain accurate quantitative estimates of the high temperature tolerance of five species of anuran amphibians, Bufo hemiophrvs. Rana plpiens, R. sylvatlca, R. septentrionalis, and Pseudacris nigrita. B. hemiophrvs and P. nlqrlta were collected in the vicinity of Grand Forks, North Dakota; the remaining species were collected at Itasca State Park, Minnesota. Tolerance was measured using the water submersion method described by Schmid (Ecology, 1965). The data were analysed by several statistical methods and the results were compared. The order of tolerance (highest to lowest) was B.. hemiophrvs, R. plpiens, R septentrionalis, P . …

The Weberian Osteology Of Three Utah Suckers (Catostomidae), William James Stubbs May 1966

The Weberian Osteology Of Three Utah Suckers (Catostomidae), William James Stubbs

Theses and Dissertations

The Weberian mechanisms of three Utah Lake suckers (Catostomidae: Catostominae; Catostomini), Catostomus fecundus Cope and Yarrow, Chasmistes liorus Jordan, and Catostomus ardens Jordan and Gilbert, were examined, described, and compared, and a statistical analysis was made of some of their more important differences. The mechanisms were found to be basically similar to one another and to those of other Catostomini as previously described and/or illustrated. They are individually distinct, but each varies within its own limits, the intraspecific variation being greatest in the wider-ranging Catostomus ardens and least in the seemingly most restricted Catostomus fecundus. From the evidence at hand …

A Historical Study Of Silver Reef: Southern Utah Mining Town, Alfred Bleak Stucki

Theses and Dissertations

While a number of short articles and histories of Silver Reef have been written, they tend either to be anecdotal in character or to emphasize the merely sensational aspects of the mining camp. These writings have failed to investigate some of the most basic sources of information concerning this highly interesting mining epic in Southern Utah. Therefore, there remains a real need for a thoroughly researched and documented history of silver Reef - a need that this thesis tries to meet.
