Theses and Dissertations

A morphological and histochemical study of the epithelium of the small intestine of the developing rat was performed using the following techniques: (1) hematoxylin and eosin; (2) periodic acid-Schiff; (3) Alcian blue; (4) alkaline phosphates; (5) acid phosphates; (6) non-specif esterace; and (7) leucine aminopeptidase. In addition to those listed above, other reactions were performed including: (1) dihydroxy-dinaphthyl-disulphide; (2) alloxan-Schiff; (3) nile blue sulfate; (4) Ziehl-Neelsen method for acid fastness; (5) Feulgen; and (6) succinic dehydrogenace. Meadow, Millard County, Utah: The Geography Of A Small Mormon Agricultural Community, Richard H. Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

The agricultural village was the basis of the original economy of Utah established by the Mormon settlers, but it has since been supplanted in importance by the industrial and commercial activities of the large centers of the Wasatch Front counties of Salt Lake, Weber, and Utah. This study was conducted in an attempt to determine the future of those communities removed from industrialized northern Utah. The village of Meadow, Millard County, was chosen as an example and it was subjected to a detailed geographic analysis. From this analysis conclusions have been drawn regarding its future.

The Nature Of The Spirit World, As Taught In The Holy Scriptures And By The Prophets, Seers, And Revelators Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Roger T. Ralphs

Theses and Dissertations

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that there are several estates through which man must pass on his way to exaltation in the celestial kingdom. These estates consist of man as: (1) a pre-mortal spirit being, a literal offspring of God; (2) a mortal being having physical as well as spiritual parents; (3) a post-mortal spirit being, his spirit having withdrawn from his physical body at death; and (4) an immortal resurected personage over which physical death has no more power. The teachings concerning these estates form a goodly portion of the gospel plan as taught by …

Theses and Dissertations

Harvey W. Holm, Master of Science

The thesis here abstracted was written under the direction of Dr. Richard M. Marwln and approved by Dr. Robert G. Fischer and Dr. Jerald L. Connelly as members of the examlng committee of which Or. Marwln was Chairman.

White Swiss mice are generally resistant to Candida albicans injected 1ntraper1tonea11y. An effort was made to determine 1f surfactants when combined with Candida albicans would decrease the LD50 of this organism. The surfactants tested were Plurafac B26, Polyethylene Glycol 1*00 Mono Laurate, Mulsor 22k, and Pluronlc L62. Peritoneal leukocyte and differential counts, tissue sections, and blood …

A Phytosociological Study Of Coprophilous Ascomycete And Basidiomycete Communities From Santaquin Canyon, Utah, A. Clyde Blauer

Theses and Dissertations

Numerous reports have been published on the taxonomy and distribution of the coprophilous Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes. No known quantitative work has been done, however, on the succession and structure of the communities formed by these higher fungi. This research was undertaken to study those two phases of the ascomycete and basidiomycete communities which grow and fruit on cow dung collected from Santaquin Canyon, Utah.

The Role Of Thiamine Pyrophosphate In Regulating The Level Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In The Central Nervous System, Bryant L. Adams Aug 1965

The Role Of Thiamine Pyrophosphate In Regulating The Level Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In The Central Nervous System, Bryant L. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

The level of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brains of white rats suffering from thiamine deficiency symptoms resulting from pyrithiamine or oxythiamine antagonism of thiamine or from thiamine deprivation was measured. The level of this amino acid was 17.5% lower in the brains of pyrithiamine-treated rats and 20.0% lower in the brains of thiamine-deprived rats than in the control rats. Daily injections of ten times the required amounts of vitamin B6 in rats treated with pyrithiamine or oxythiamine or by thiamine deprivation had no effect on the level of brain gamma-aminobutyric acid or on the psiological behavior of these rats. The …

Studies Of Rat Brain Thiamine Pyrophosphokinase, Lavell Rolfson Johnson Aug 1965

Studies Of Rat Brain Thiamine Pyrophosphokinase, Lavell Rolfson Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The enzyme ATP:thiamine pyrophosphotransferase (thiamine pyrophosphokinaseJ was purified from acetone powders which were prepared from rat brains up to the chromatography on alumina C_γ step by a modified procedure that Mano (Y. Mano, J. Biochem., 42, 283 (1960)] developed for the purification of the rat liver thiamine pyrophosphokinase. The enzyme was purified 12 fold over that in the original extract of the acetone powder. A spectrophotometric assay for the brain thiamine pyrophosphokinase was developed utilizing brewer's yeast apotransketolase. The transketolase assay was able to detect less than 10^-11 moles of thiamine diphosphate, which was synthesized by the kinase, in the …

Tularemia And Deer Flies In The Environs Of Utah Lake, Utah, Kaye B. Cox May 1965

Tularemia And Deer Flies In The Environs Of Utah Lake, Utah, Kaye B. Cox

Theses and Dissertations

Deer flies have been implicated as mechanical veotors of tularemia in Utah. Although infected flies heretofore have not been tound in nature, there is little doubt of their importance in transmitting tularemia to man. Two species present in this area, Chrysops discalis Williston and Chrysops noctifer Osten Sacken, have been shown experimentally to transmit the disease. The presence of deer flies in the environs of Utah Lake where tularemia is endemic oftera a potential health threat to man, and the expanding human population and development ot recreational facilities adjacent to the lake inorease this potential. Despite the taot that deer …

A Comparison Of A Selected Group Of Lds Seminary Teachers In Relation To Nine Criteria For Measuring Religious Maturity, Gilbert W. Hull Jan 1965

A Comparison Of A Selected Group Of Lds Seminary Teachers In Relation To Nine Criteria For Measuring Religious Maturity, Gilbert W. Hull

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis was designed as a follow up of a study completed in 1959 which developed nine criteria for measuring religious maturity. The objective of this study was to develop a scale based on the nine criteria and administer it to seminary teachers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to explore the possibility of measuring differences in religious maturity. It was assumed that younger teachers who obtained a degree in a human behaviorally-oriented field of study would show the greatest level of religious maturity.
