Modification Of The Inprocess Infrared Densitometer, Ernest Balch, Jeffrey Chan Jan 1974

Modification Of The Inprocess Infrared Densitometer, Ernest Balch, Jeffrey Chan

Theses

A model of an infrared scanning densitometer was constructed using the basic designs developed by Hisler and Casinelli in their 1970 research work, and by Beaupre and Jasper in their 1971 research work, plus several new ideas which greatly improved the reliability and usefulness of the machine. Among the changes were: use of an infrared sensitive photomultiplier tube on recommendation of Hisler and Caslnelli; Z axis modulation for oscilloscope display, a new idea; and addition of a diffuser to illuminate the sample to provide better correlation between wet and dry densities, on recommendation of Dr. Schumann.

Relationship Between Image Size And Tone Reproduction Curve, Kenneth Hansen, Robert Pisa Jan 1974

Relationship Between Image Size And Tone Reproduction Curve, Kenneth Hansen, Robert Pisa

Theses

This project attempts to find a relationship between preferred tone reproduction and image size. Photographic prints with different tone reproduction characteristics were made. The differences were very small but just noticeable. Prints were made in three different sizes and compared to a standard size print by a paired comparison method. Analysis showed that there was no tone reproduction difference in the preferred prints of both smaller and larger sizes.

Multispectral Techniques Applied To Photomicrography, William Richard Mueller Jan 1974

Multispectral Techniques Applied To Photomicrography, William Richard Mueller

Theses

Based upon an objects absorbtion and reflection characteristics to varying amounts of radiation, a series of selective wavelength band exposures were made for color separation of a microscopic specimen. The exposures axe made to record the specimens characteristic transmission or reflection patterns as a visible density value. The exposeures were made in a overlapping band width manner. The exposures were in the blue, green, and red regions of the spectrum. The resultant negetives were printed on Polycontrast paper using filter No. 2. The main purpose of the experiment was the design of a photographic system to remove the biological step …

Effects Of Exposure Changes On Perception Of Detail In Radiography, Warren Meyers Shepard Jan 1974

Effects Of Exposure Changes On Perception Of Detail In Radiography, Warren Meyers Shepard

Theses

Voltage and magnification are the variables of exposure used to investigate the effects upon the detection of lesions on lung tissue of a phantom. Analysis by percent correctness and ANOVA indicate that the voltage and magnification for the levels investigated had no significant effect upon detection accuracy. ROC analysis of the data also show no significant increase in detectability attributed to the variables investigated, The ROC evaluation does indicate a slight increase in detectability of the simulated lesions, while the percent correctness analysis does not. This difference may be due to the bias of the observers and removed by the …

Development And Testing Of A Non-Recording Microdensitometer, Charles Biss, Randy Defrank Jan 1974

Development And Testing Of A Non-Recording Microdensitometer, Charles Biss, Randy Defrank

Theses

A need exists in American industry for a small-area reading densitometer. The object of this effort was to examine optical designs proposed by Photographic Sciences Corporation, to formulate a reasonable system design, and to work this design into a prototype instrument. After testing several optical designs, one was chosen that proved its feasibility on the micro-optical bench. A case was designed for the unit and the optical system made of microscope components was set into place. A photomultiplier tube and amplifier were incorporated as the photometric measuring device. The system was tested and proved to exhibit the qualities of a …

The Recovery Of Images From X-Ray Fogged Film Using Controlled Diffusion Development, William Jameson Jan 1974

The Recovery Of Images From X-Ray Fogged Film Using Controlled Diffusion Development, William Jameson

Theses

An, investigation of improving the quality of light formed images uniformly fogged by X-rays was done using Kodak Super-XX film. A viscous developer containing glycerine as a thickening agent was used as the means of obtaining recovery. The results indicate no evidence of image improvement in terms of overall contrast; however, small area contrast was extended to more density levels using the image recovery technique.

Measurement Of Volume Scattering Functions In Turbid Water And Its Correlation With Mtf Degradation, Richard Hart, Michael Mcdonald Jan 1974

Measurement Of Volume Scattering Functions In Turbid Water And Its Correlation With Mtf Degradation, Richard Hart, Michael Mcdonald

Theses

Scattering of light in turbid water is a major source of image degradation. The intention of this experiment was to construct a small angle scattering meter and measure the volume scattering functions for specific turbid conditions. These experimentally derived volume scattering functions were used to correlate a mathematical modulation transfer function derivation with previously measured modulation transfer functions for a specific turbid medium. Due to design shortcomings, errors were produced in the production of the volume scattering functions. This produced a lack of correlation between our mathematically derived MTF's and those measured in the past. The validity of the mathematical …

The Hydrogen Ion - Bromide Ion Interaction In Photographic Developers, Steven Brainerd Jan 1974

The Hydrogen Ion - Bromide Ion Interaction In Photographic Developers, Steven Brainerd

Theses

An investigation has been made on the interaction effect of the hydrogen ion (pH level) and the bromide* ion on the development response variables. A pH range of 8.8 to 11.2 and bromide ion concentration levels of 0.125 to 8.0 grams per liter were used. The hydrogen ion-bromide ion interaction as tested on Kodak film type Fine Grain Release Positive 5302 had a significant effect on the rate of development, gamma, and photographic film speed in buffered metol-hvdroquinone, phenidone-hydroquinone, and hydroquinone sulfite developers. The trend for all developers was a decrease in the effect caused by the bromide ion with …

A Unified Matrix Formulation For The Unbalance Response Of A Flexible Rotor In Fluid-Film Bearings, Charles Thomas Jr Jan 1974

A Unified Matrix Formulation For The Unbalance Response Of A Flexible Rotor In Fluid-Film Bearings, Charles Thomas Jr

Theses

An analysis and a computer program for determining the steady-state response of a general rotor-bearing system, based on the concept of a dynamic stiffness matrix, are presented in this thesis. The rotor is idealized as an axial assemblage of beam elements that have continuous mass and isotropic, elastic properties. These properties are developed by using the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory equations to form the dynamic stiffness matrix. Transverse shear effects are neglected. Gyroscopic coupling effects, asymmetric linearized bearing properties, and unbalanced loading are represented as optional end effects on the beam elements. The development necessitated the use of complex variables to …

A Near Time Optimal Adaptive Control Algorithm For Second Order Systems, Carlton Warren Jan 1974

A Near Time Optimal Adaptive Control Algorithm For Second Order Systems, Carlton Warren

Theses

During the past few years, many non-linear and/or adaptive control algorithms have been developed for industrial processes. Many have been rather complex schemes either requiring or specifically developed for an on line digital computer. As an alternative to such systems, at least on low order plants, the development of a near time optimal, adaptive control algorithm is proposed. This rule must encompass a significantly large group of the systems to be encountered and yet be simple enough for hardware implementation as a single loop controller. The author's attention is confined primarily to systems whose transfer functions may be approximated by …

Development And Applications Of A Quadratic Isoparametric Finite Element For Axisymmetric Stress And Deflection Analysis, F. X. Janucik Jan 1974

Development And Applications Of A Quadratic Isoparametric Finite Element For Axisymmetric Stress And Deflection Analysis, F. X. Janucik

Theses

The theory and computer program for an axisymmetric finite element for static stress and deflection analysis is presented. The element is an eight noded isoparametric quadrilateral based on the displacement method which is capable of representing quadratic variation of element boundaries and displacements. Element stiffness properties are developed for linear elastic small displacement theory using homogeneous isotropic material. Test cases are compared with theoretical solutions from the theory of elasticity to identify program capabilities and limitations. Ability to analyse axisymmetric problems and to represent curved element boundaries has been demonstrated. Example problems including a cylindrical pressure vessel, a disk of …

Separation Of Gas Mixtures Via Batch Parametric Pumping : A Theoretical Study, Jose G. Lopez Dec 1973

Separation Of Gas Mixtures Via Batch Parametric Pumping : A Theoretical Study, Jose G. Lopez

Theses

An equilibrium plug?flow model, for the batch isothermal separation of a binary gas mixture in a pressure changing parametric pump, was investigated for the system propane?argon on carbon, with the aid of a G. E. Pack 4020 computer. Separation factors comparable to a temperature changing parametric pump are predicted by the model. A change in pressure of the gas mixture may be carried out very rapidly, compared with a temperature change of similar magnitude. The effects of temperature, pressure, concentration, and penetration are discussed.

Size Distribution Analysis Of Polydisperse, Monodisperse, And Chemically Mixed Polymer Latex Systems Via A Combination Of Light Scattering And Ultracentrifugation Techniques, Robert Cembrola Dec 1973

Size Distribution Analysis Of Polydisperse, Monodisperse, And Chemically Mixed Polymer Latex Systems Via A Combination Of Light Scattering And Ultracentrifugation Techniques, Robert Cembrola

Theses

The use of angular light scattering techniques has proved to be of the highest precision for the size distribution analysis of colloidal size spheres, but is inherently limited to quite narrow, monomodal size distributions of particles of a single chemical component. These limitations can be overcome to a limited degree by a technique that utilizes light scattering and a preparative ultracentrifuge. The latter fractionates the colloidal particles according to density (i.e., chemical com position) and/or size. Applying the zonal ultracentrifugation technique, both types of separation take place in the presence of a density gradient and ultimately fractionated samples are obtained …

The Effect Of Variation In The Ratio Of Specific Heats With Temperature And Pressure On Horsepower Requirements Of Reciprocating Compressors, Selim Piskin Oct 1973

The Effect Of Variation In The Ratio Of Specific Heats With Temperature And Pressure On Horsepower Requirements Of Reciprocating Compressors, Selim Piskin

Theses

The expansion and compression of fluids is discussed in relation to the design of reciprocating compressors. As part of this thesis, the design equations for reciprocating compressors are developed for both ideal and reel gases.

The resulting design equations contain, as one of the parameters, the ratio of the specific heats. Using published componential specific heat data, a correlation was developed relating the dependence of the ratio of specific heat on temperature and pressure for the nore common gases. These correlations were developed so as to be compatible with the compressor design equation and to provide rapid evaluation of the …

Correlation Of Drain Breakdown With Excess Noise And Other Surface-Related Phenomena In Enhancement Mosfets, Jerry J. Rij Sep 1973

Correlation Of Drain Breakdown With Excess Noise And Other Surface-Related Phenomena In Enhancement Mosfets, Jerry J. Rij

Theses

An investigation of semiconductor surface-related phenomena has been undertaken to correlate 1/F noise with drain breakdown in P-channel enhancement MOSFET's. Increases in the intensity of drain current fluctuations at 10Hz and at 1KHz, particularly at the higher frequency, was observed following accelerated life-testing for threshold voltage drift. It was also concluded that mobile ions near the oxide-semiconductor interface produce a sharp increase in fast trapping centers. It was also found that 1/F noise intensity consistently peaked at the threshold of drain breakdown and that it steadily decreased with further increases in drain current. Of all the transistors tested, those with …

Rubbery Acrylic Polymer Adhesives, Steven Walter Sep 1973

Rubbery Acrylic Polymer Adhesives, Steven Walter

Theses

This study shows how rubbery acrylic polymer adhesives can be used to adhere rubber substrates to each other. Two substrate rubber compounds were used. A styrene-butadiene copolymer and a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer. The adhesives were homopolymers based on polybutyl acrylate and poly2-ethyl hexyl acrylate.

Two reference standards were used. The first was commercial rubber based, solvent cements. The second was commercial acrylic solution polymers. All experimental work was compared to these standards. An attempt was made to optimize the adhesive components, as well as the adhesive application procedures and curing conditions.

A primer coating consisting of polymer, monomer, and catalyst was …
