The work described in this thesis was undertaken with the view of exploring a reaction sequence suggested by early French investigators to synthesize 2-amino-4-chlorophenol-6-sulfonic acid especially in reference to the German claim that a low yield of product would result following this preparation, In particular, a successful application of this procedure would afford a relatively direct and inexpensive route to the sulfonic acid which is used as an azo dyestuff intermediate and could possibly find application in medicinal chemistry.

It was found that sulfonation and nitration of p-dichlorobenzene gave a high yield of the sodium-2-nitro-1,4-3 dichloro-benzene-6-sulfonate (91%) when using the …

The following chapters are devoted to the various phases of that branch of construction which is followed from the offshore side of the waterfront. This branch, in the parlance of the building trades, is known as dockbuilding. Years ago all waterfront structures in New York Harbor were constructed almost entirely of timber and experience taught that the most economical approach for building docks and wharves was made by utilizing floating piledrivers and derricks. The Mexican War was not waged for the purpose of acquiring Texas by force since Texas had become a part of the United States after having won her independence. The Mexican war was fought for this reason and not for that so often given that the United States instigated it because of a lust for additional territory. Mexico, thought refusing to recognize this independence, accepted the inevitable, but did not consider the strip of land between the Nueces and the Rio Grande rivers as Texas territory.

In 1864, three years after the death of his wife, Robert Browning engaged in a correspondence with Frances Julia Wedgwood, an intellectual spinster of thirty. Miss Wedgwood was a woman of distinguished ancestry, being a descendant also of Sir James Mackintosh, and a relation by marriage of Charles Darwin. Miss Redwood had long been an admirer of Browning's poetry. She herself had written several novels, so it was natural that sooner or later an occasion should arise when she and Robert Browning would meet.

The scope of this study is limited to a survey of the high schools of Texas. Efforts have been made to obtain such data as would give a cross-sectional view of the types of plans now in use among all sizes of high schools in every section of the state. With this purpose in view questionaires were sent to fifty high school treasurers of schools whose enrollment ranged in size from 250 to 2500. This list of schools was taken from a state bulletin containing the names and enrollment of all the affiliated high schools of the state.

It has been shown that cuprous oxide, when formed from a copper surface by suitable heat treatment, has remarkable rectifying properties towards alternating voltages applied through the oxide and copper. The purpose of our work was to investigate, the effect fully from all angles possible, and especially from those considerations affecting the constancy and permanence in the electric circuit.

The work ranged from furnace operation to tests of completed units, and further to the development of a theory explaining as completely as possible this rectifying property.
