Electron Microscope Investigation Of Silver Halide Crystals, R. David Williams

This paper describes two methods utilizing the transmission electron microscope for studying the structural characteristics of photographic silver halide grains: (1) direct observation and subsequent determination of the grain size-frequency distribution for a given emulsion and (2) the carbon replica technique for studying the external structure of the grains. Other uses of the electron microscope in photographic research that could be applied at R.I.T. are briefly discussed.

Silicic acid is a water soluble colloidal resin which can be obtained commercially. The effect of silicic acid as a desensitizer in fountain solution was studied. The resin of this colloidal solution was compared to gum arabic solution. A static stress analysis of the glass-metal truss type bridge of a Van de Graaff Accelerator is presented. The solutions are first computed using conventional methods such as method of joints and the method of virtual work. Secondly, the solutions are found using a computer program, SAP IV, which is a structural analysis program for static and dynamic response of linear systems. The solutions are then compared to each other and appropriate conclusions are presented.

American daily newspapers present millions of punctuated sentences to the public, yet--after an extensive search of literature for similar studies--no comprehensive study of punctuation frequency seems to have been made before this study. It is hypothesized (1) that punctuation appears at predictable rates in the main news section of American daily newspapers, (2) that statistically significant differences exist in punctuation frequency between each of five selected newspapers and--by group--between those of large and small cities, and (3) that statistically significant differences exist in punctuation frequency between 1976, 1966, 1956 and 1946. Based on existing information concerning the effects of pressure on the biodegradability of sanitary sewage, a model activated sludge reactor was used in conjunction with pressurization to determine the viability of pressurization as a primary sewage treatment process.

Municipal sewage samples were pressurized at 40 psig for one hour with an excess of oxygen. An air compressor and a steel drum were used for sample pressurization. A non-pressurized control sample was maintained. After pressurization, the samples were fed into separate model activated sludge reactors. Biodegradability of both types of effluent was measured by determining their five day biochemical oxygen demands …

Modulation of kidney cyclic AMP pdase by diuretics and antihypertensives was studied. It was found that spironolactone activates pdase and that furosemide, ethacrynic acid, triameterine , quinethazone, metolazone, chlorothiazide, propranolol and hydralazine, inhibit pdase. The relative tissue specificity (medulla or cortex) for some of the compounds appears to be in agreement with the proposed sites of drug action via pharmocological mechanisms which do not involve Inter action with cAMP pdase . The specific activity of pdase in the medulla was found to be double that in the cortex. Pdase was found to be a complex enzyme with at least two …

In a complete imaging system, consisting of a camera and a camera lens, four black and white films, an enlarger, a print made from each film and a number of observers, the resultant images were judged subjectively. The system was also evaluated by four acutance models. When the acutance ratings were compared with the sharpness ratings there was not a significant correlation between the two ratings. The author believes that there would be a better correlation between the two ratings if the acutance models were used under the same conditiobs and the same constants as they were formulated under.

This paper examines the behavior of digital logic families, specifically identifying the properties and characteristics of digital fail-safe logic. Fail-safe digital design is examined utilizing classical logic and semiconductor theory.
