Agatha Rollins’ 1977 master’s project, Electronic Cell Pattern Recognition Manual, explores the feasibility of using the Technicon Hemalog "D" Differential Analyzer as a diagnostic tool for hematologic diseases. The analyzer identifies white blood cell types through electronic signals based on their scatter and absorbance patterns in the peroxidase channel. Rollins hypothesized that similar diseases would yield consistent, recognizable electronic patterns, enabling identification without manual microscopy.

The theory and computer program for finite element analysis of Stokes (creeping) fluid flow is presented. The element is an eight node, two dimensional isoparametric quadrillateral. The element is formulated directly from the Stokes equations of motion, a special case of the Navier-Stokes equations where inertia terms are dropped, using the method of weighted residuals with Galerkin's criterion applied. Velocities in two directions are solved for at all eight nodes while pressure is solved simultaneously at the four corner nodes only. Several test cases have been run with the program. As for photographic systems , the human visual system can also be described by an MTF. However, due to the complexity and non-linearity of the visual system, the MTF alone is a poor predictor of response. We have formulated and tested two mathematical models which modify the MTF of the eye. Effectively, an imperfect integrating function (low pass filter) has been proposed to be operating on stimuli which are sent to the brain. The models were tested and found to be better predictors of visual response than the present MTF alone.

The radiobiologic level from an average direct-exposure, fine-grain mammograph approaches 4000 millirads. Copying reduced-exposure mammographs onto high gradient films yields a method of reducing radiation to the patient by a factor of 2. A mathematically based tone-reproduction system was developed in an attempt to produce acceptable facsimile images from a series of reduced-exposure mammographs. Acceptability was tested by radiologists using a sensitometric phantum. The radiologists were asked to quality rank a full exposure mammograph, facsimile mammographs, and a film-screen mammograph in terms of detectability of size and number of calcifications. Spectrophotometric analysis and visual titration methods have been applied to the determination of Phenidone, its 4-methyl and 4, 4-dimsthyl derivatives, in photographic developers. The visual titration method is modified to allow for variation due to operator technique. Spectrophotometric methods are utilized for the identification of the Phenidone derivative in the Kodak process E-6 first developer. The derivative is believed to be Dimezome at 0.3 g/l.

Interaction Of Bromide And Organic Antifoggants In Development, Miriam Decastro, Kim Eisenberg

Various levels of bromide and an organic antifoggant, benzotriazole, were combined in a developer and investigated to determine if an interaction existed. Both nitrogen burst agitation and viscous development were used. It was found that benzotriazole is such a strong antifoggant that interaction occurs only at low density levels, and the influence of benzotriazole increases with development time.

This thesis contains descriptions of current methods of identifying chemical processing errors, followed by a description of a proposed method for quantitatively identifying chemical processing errors. The goal of this research is to determine the relationships between chemical deviations in the first developer of Kodak Color Reversal Process E-6 and the resulting changes in the sensitometric parameters of Kodak film type Ektachrome 64 Professional (Daylight). These relationships are presented in graphical form in a section of this thesis entitled "Results and Conclusions".

However, recently more sophisticated applications, including video recording, have necessitated refinements of this technology. This study concentrates on the signal processing techniques used to inhance the packing density of stored data. The development of an axisymmetric ring finite element is presented and FORTRAN subroutines for implementing the capability into the MSC/NASTRAN finite element program are given. The element is an eightnoded isoparametric quadrilateral of quadratic order. The following matrices and capabilities are developed: 1. stiffness matrix for homogeneous isotropic materials, 2. thermal conductance matrix for homogeneous isotropic materials, 3. calculation of equivalent nodal forces due to temperature loads, 4. calculation of stresses, and 5. plotting of undeformed and deformed structures. Image degradation of color aerial photography due to atmospheric effects is spectrometrically evaluated as a function of air column depth for the purpose of defining corrective terms for the conditions under which the particular imagery was acquired. The theoretical development illustrates how these terms may be used to 'subtract out' the atmospheric effects of back-scatter and attenuation from the imagery. The technique suggests that true spectral information of ground objects can be calculated despite the presence of atmospheric effects during aerial photo graphic data collection. Recognition Thresholds For The Spectrally Opponent Neural Network In The Human Visual System, Douglas Smith

Recognition thresholds for an alphanumeric resolution test object of differing target/background chromaticities and equal luminosities were determined. Combinations of the four psychologically unique hues were studied, and those pairs corresponding to the green-red and yellow-blue opponent neural systems were found to give the highest visibilities. Equivalent achromatic contrasts for each of the presented color pairs were determined, and comparison of the results with achromatic data of other researchers shows clearly that the spectrally opponent neural network in the human visual system is much less efficient in processing spatial information than is the spatially opponent (achromatic) neural network.

"Polyox" is a polymer of ethylene oxide. It is soluble in water and commercially available. The effects of Polyox in fountain solutions were studied and evaluated. The same concentration (one-half percent of Polyox in water) at different pH and blending times, was tested for physical properties and printability. The physical property tests made were of viscosity, surface tension and contact angle. The printability tests were conducted as roll-up, ability to clean up the plate, resistance to scumming, printing sharpness and resolution properties.
