Behavior Of Reinforced Fibrous Beam-Column Joints Under Cyclic Loads, Sitaram Mahadev

From exploratory research of reinforced fibrous concrete, it has been shown that fibrous concrete is potentially superior and less costly than the conventional reinforced concrete.

The testing program consisted of ten beam-column joints with half of these joints containing 1-1/2 percent hooked end fibers. The beam column joints were constructed with less hoops than a conventional seismic joint would have, according to design specifications of the American Concrete Institute Code (ACI 318-77). In studying the behavior of these beam-column joints, two loading cases were examined:

(1) critical regions whose inelastic behavior was controlled by bending, and

A model was tested which, given a certain film and contact screen, can predict halftone modulation transfer functions. A relationship was derived which, given the halftone MTF, can predict the halftone dot gradient for the system.

The effects of the enzyme papain on triarylmethane photochromism were investigated. The interaction between papain solutions and triarylmethane dyes was measured using difference spectroscopy and relative equilibrium constants were calculated. The effects of papain on Malachite Green photochromic solutions were also measured. Both crude and commercially available purified papain were tested. Crude papain bleached triarylmethane dyes and reduced fatigue in triarylmethane photochromic solutions. Purified papain did not bleach the dyes and did not have a significant effect on fatigue in photochromic solutions. It was not as soluble in the alcohol based solvent as the crude enzyme was. A study was performed to determine the nature of the effects causing resolution loss in contact exposure Transparent Electrophotographic (TEP) films. Target and TEP film characteristics were varied and resolution was measured under magnification. Results indicated that the factors responsible for resolution loss included the grain structure of the original target, moisture content of the target emulsion, and surface charge of the target. No conclusions could be made for the effect of TEP photoconductor coating thickness.

Most researchers attempting to solve this problem have begun their efforts by trying to have the computer recognize the underlying syntactic form (the parse tree) of the sentence. This thesis presents an overview of the history of syntactic parsing of natural language, and it compares the major methods that have been used. Linguistically, two recent grammars are described: transformational grammar and systemic grammar. The clay forms for my thesis commemorate personal experiences, dreams, memories, and fantasies. I view my work as capturing a moment of something familiar; a reminder of ordinary events that might have gone unnoticed. The unity of imagery, surface and form is the major investigation for my thesis. Drawing from autobiographical themes and searching for an equilibrium between figure and vessel are the criteria from which I work. I also explore the process of transfor mation of my images from two dimensional figures to their full three dimensional expression.
