Analysis Of The Thermoelastic Response Of A Semi-Space To A Short Laser Pulse, Gary Renz May 1997

Analysis Of The Thermoelastic Response Of A Semi-Space To A Short Laser Pulse, Gary Renz

Theses

A study of the thermoelastic response of a semi-space medium to a short laser pulse generated heat is presented. This study uses the generalized thermoelasticity theory proposed by Green and Lindsay. This theory generalizes the classical theory of thermoelasticity by developing hyperbolic heat conduction equations and temperature-rate dependent constitutive equations. By so doing, an inherent paradox and physically unrealistic result in the classical theory of thermoelasticity that proposes infinite speed of thermal responses through a medium is corrected. Its validity is justified by the satisfaction of Fourier's law by which classical thermoelasticity is based. The Green-Lindsay theory adopts two thermal …

Wisc-Iii Coding Task And Coding Recall: A New Approach For Assessing Short-Term Visual Memory, Deirdre Rosenberg May 1997

Wisc-Iii Coding Task And Coding Recall: A New Approach For Assessing Short-Term Visual Memory, Deirdre Rosenberg

Theses

This study examines an immediate recall technique using the Coding section of the WISC-HI as a screening measure of short-term visual memory. Fourth, seventh, and tenth grade students performed the Coding subtest from the WISC-HI, the Coding recall technique, and the Abstract Visual Memory (AVM) subtest from the Test of Memory and Learning (TOMAL). A positive correlation of Coding Recall with the AVM subtest was found to be statistically significant for fourth and seventh graders, but not tenth graders. The results suggest that the Coding recall technique may be a useful screening test for evaluating short-term visual memory in children …

Alphabet Fantasy, Kimberly Kllc May 1997

Alphabet Fantasy, Kimberly Kllc

Theses

The goal of this graduate thesis was to create 26 small felt sculptures of animals, creatures, and characters. These characters were designed to work together as one large twenty-six unit piece of work or in single units or small gcoups as smaller pieces of work. The entire group works together because the name of each animal or character begins with a different letter of the alphabet. It was a goal to make the animals and characters appealing and amusing. Bright colors were used as were simple facial features so they would appear friendly. Familiar shapes and animals were chosen to …

Resolution Enhancement Of Thermal Infrared Images Via High Resolution Class-Map And Statistical Methods, David Schlingmeier May 1997

Resolution Enhancement Of Thermal Infrared Images Via High Resolution Class-Map And Statistical Methods, David Schlingmeier

Theses

Remote sensing from long stand-off distances offers numerous advantages. As our ability to extract information from data has increased, so has the need for high spatial resolution. Such results are often not available due to technological or financial limitations on the detectors which scan the scene and produce the imagery. Therefore, for many years to come, spatial resolution enhancement using additional data from a variety of sources shall remain popular and cost-effective. Work has been on-going at the Rochester Institute of Technology's Center for Imaging Science in the spatial resolution enhancement of thermal infrared imagery. Background thermal imaging theory is …

Digital Color Press Technologies: Analysis Of The Printing Characteristics As Compared With Swop, Jennifer Kerrigan May 1997

Digital Color Press Technologies: Analysis Of The Printing Characteristics As Compared With Swop, Jennifer Kerrigan

Theses

At the introduction of any new technology, there is a steep learning curve for ser vice providers and end users alike. With new digital printing technologies, service providers must learn how to evaluate and optimize the print characteristics of their presses, in order to provide a product of highest quality. For print buyers, designers and other end users of digital imaging, it is important to understand the level of quality that can be expected from the new imaging devices, in order to develop a market and customer base for the new technologies.

The Collotype: History, Process & Photographic Documentaion, Denis Defibaugh May 1997

The Collotype: History, Process & Photographic Documentaion, Denis Defibaugh

Theses

Historically the producers of collotype printing have been secretive and taken a proprietary attitude toward the production of collotype prints. Therefore, knowledge about and information on the growth of the collotype industry has been minimal. Although the collotype process produces prints that are amoung the most beautiful and delicate of any graphic arts medium, collotypes presently are rarely produced commercially or even as an artistic medium. Eventually, the making of collotypes will be a lost art. The primary objective of this thesis was to produce a portfolio of photographic images which illustrates all of the production steps in the making …

An Investigation Into The Growing Popularity Of Script Typefaces And The Technical Means By Which They Are Created Today, Yacotzin Alva May 1997

An Investigation Into The Growing Popularity Of Script Typefaces And The Technical Means By Which They Are Created Today, Yacotzin Alva

Theses

The examination of any current type specimen book invariably discloses a large number of faces designed to imitate some form of handwriting. Strictly speaking, such designs are known as script types. It is a matter of opinion which typefaces should be classified as scripts, especially since all early type designs were derived from written forms. Today, we typically label a typeface as a script if it retains the look of having been written with a pen or other writing implement. Type specimen catalogues of the nineteenth century list numerous examples of such written forms, though these are mostly restricted to …

Women Typeface Designers, Laura Webber May 1997

Women Typeface Designers, Laura Webber

Theses

Nowhere is there a single, exclusive publication containing biographies, type specimens, and photographs of the many women typeface designers. From source to source, one will usually find the same names of male typeface designers repeated. However, one must refer to many sources to compile a list of women typeface designers. In an age of rapid access to all sorts of reference information, it seems silly that one must be forced to search many sources and possibly never find all they are looking for. This thesis project provides a single reference source of women typeface designers and samples of their typefaces …

A Study In How The Ink Set, Solid Ink Density And Screening Method Influence The Color Gamut In Four Color Process Printing, Mattias Andersson May 1997

A Study In How The Ink Set, Solid Ink Density And Screening Method Influence The Color Gamut In Four Color Process Printing, Mattias Andersson

Theses

The number of possible reproducible colors in a printing method is called the color gamut. This gamut is the range of colors around the spectrum and from light to dark that are available in the process. Previous research has found that the three parameters, spectral reflectance of the ink, solid ink density level and screening method, all influence the gamut in process color printing. This thesis evaluated how much these parameters change the color gamut both as individual parameters and in combination. A test target with 168 patches in the most saturated combinations of cyan, magenta, yellow and black was …

Degree Of Quantization And Spatial Addressability Tradeoffs In Perceived Quality Of Color Images, Alexander Vaysman May 1997

Degree Of Quantization And Spatial Addressability Tradeoffs In Perceived Quality Of Color Images, Alexander Vaysman

Theses

The objective of this thesis research was to investigate the tradeoffs between the number of quantization levels and spatial addressability of printed color images. Image quantization was done by employing the error-diffusion algorithm. The diffusion of error was performed in CMYK color space. The resulting images were printed on a color output device simulating different spatial addressabilities. To evaluate the perceived image quality, a psychophysical experiment was conducted followed by a statistical analysis of the experimental data. Based on the results of this analysis, the conclusions on the tradeoffs between the number of quantization levels and spatial addressability were drawn. …

A Comparison Of Image Quality Of Ink Jet And Dye Thermal Printing For Use In Ophthalmic Photography/Angiography, William Fischer May 1997

A Comparison Of Image Quality Of Ink Jet And Dye Thermal Printing For Use In Ophthalmic Photography/Angiography, William Fischer

Theses

Retinal photography and angiography is the process of documenting a person's retina, the inside lining of the eye, using a specially designed camera. Traditionally, these images have been recorded on both color slide and black and white film. Recent technological advances in electronic /digital imaging have led to new means of recording these retinal images. These images may be viewed on a computer monitor, but typically these images are printed to a high resolution /addressability output device. By utilizing a high resolution /addressability ink jet printer it may be possible to produce output of these images at a quality equal …

Preferred Lightness And Chromatic Image Contrast Reproduction, Mihai Cuciurean-Zapan May 1997

Preferred Lightness And Chromatic Image Contrast Reproduction, Mihai Cuciurean-Zapan

Theses

In this study, the image preference as a function of lightness and chromatic contrast of images produced on an ink-jet printer is examined. The purpose is to develop image manipulation rules, useful in the development of printer algorithms to produce images that are preferred by viewers over images that have been printed without application of these rules. Five images are used during the psychophysical experiment, two business graphics and three pictorial, processed in three different ways in RLAB color space, once having only the tightness contrast varied, then only the chromatic contrast, and finally both lightness and chromatic contrast varied. …

An Investigation And Evaluation Of Promela/Spin As A Validation Tool For Asynchronous Concurrent Systems, Mark Bezdany May 1997

An Investigation And Evaluation Of Promela/Spin As A Validation Tool For Asynchronous Concurrent Systems, Mark Bezdany

Theses

Historically, the consequences of implementing faulty designs of concurrent/ distributed systems have been well known. There have many documented occasions where the little-known and unaccounted-for situations have caused the loss of human life and limb. This problem can be generalized, nowadays, to systems termed as mission critical. This term has arisen because individuals, businesses, and governments have come to depend on their correct operation. Failures in these systems can have such an adverse impact, that they are simply unacceptable. Although, due to the inherent complexity of these systems, preventing such failures can prove to be a very difficult task. PROMELA/SPIN …

Analysis Of Image Noise In Multispectral Color Acquisition, Peter Burns May 1997

Analysis Of Image Noise In Multispectral Color Acquisition, Peter Burns

Theses

The design of a system for multispectral image capture will be influenced by the imaging application, such as image archiving, vision research, illuminant modification or improved (trichromatic) color reproduction. A key aspect of the system performance is the effect of noise, or error, when acquiring multiple color image records and processing of the data. This research provides an analysis that allows the prediction of the image-noise characteristics of systems for the capture of multispectral images. The effects of both detector noise and image processing quantization on the color information are considered, as is the correlation between the errors in the …

Valve Train Natural Frequency Measurement And Analysis, Cynthia Greene May 1997

Valve Train Natural Frequency Measurement And Analysis, Cynthia Greene

Theses

Natural frequencies are very important characteristics of a valve train system. From the measured natural frequencies of a valve train the following can be determined: will the system have acceptable dynamic behavior, is one valve train system design superior to another, and is a dynamic model of the system properly setup. The three most important modes of vibration of a valve train system are the fundamental mode of vibration of the entire linkage (system natural frequency), translation of the valve spring, and torsion of the camshaft. Valve trains are nonlinear systems due to varying system geometry throughout the lift event. …
