Depiction Of Portraiture, Likeness Vs. Representation, Mario Guarriello
Depiction Of Portraiture, Likeness Vs. Representation, Mario Guarriello
Theses
So the dreaded 'Thesis Paper' begins. I hope this paper can help you, the reader, understand the thought process behind this body of work. I have always felt that my artwork should stand on its own legs, unsupported by flowery, artspeak. This body of work is completely different from anything I have attempted before. This paper is as much an experiment as the work itself. I have divided this paper into three major sections; Looking Back, The Thesis Itself & Looking Ahead. I have found that this thesis has not only become about the last year, but my career as …

Screening Measures For Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Heather Foley
Screening Measures For Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Heather Foley
Theses
While performance-based measures have not typically been used by school psychologists in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) assessment, a growing body of evidence suggests that neuropsychological measures may provide valuable diagnostic information as part of a comprehensive evaluation of the disorder. The utility of two neuropsychological measures for use as screening measures in assessing ADHD was examined in the present study. The performance of 29 children with ADHD was compared with that of 96 controls on alternate forms of Trails B and a Figure Cancellation Task. Although a developmental trend was found suggesting increased performance with age, time to complete …
The Relationship Between Social Intelligence And Behavioral Functioning In Students With Learning Disabilities, James Vreeland
The Relationship Between Social Intelligence And Behavioral Functioning In Students With Learning Disabilities, James Vreeland
Theses
Clinicians suggest that differences between the nonverbal Picture Arrangement (PA) and verbal Comprehension (C) WISC subtests reflect poor social perception, understanding, or action. In this study, data from 79 children with learning disabilities were subjected to repeated measures MANOVA to examine PA and C social sensitivity. Although PA and C scores correlated minimally with Teacher (TRF) and Parent (CBCL) reported behavior problems, those who scored significantly higher on PA than C (PA >C) displayed more TRF Internalizing, Withdrawal, Social, and Thought Problems than the C > PA group. The PA > C group had more TRF Withdrawal and Thought Problems than the …
Marker, Myth And Monolith: A Sculpture Garden, E. Blaise Depaolo
Marker, Myth And Monolith: A Sculpture Garden, E. Blaise Depaolo
Theses
In my thesis proposal I said I wanted to make four large scale works, relative as a group but individual. As the work evolved in the design stage, it became obvious to me that what I was doing was designing a sculpture garden. I have referred to my thesis work as The Sculpture Garden since, and refer to it as such throughout this paper. The individual sculpture pieces I refer to as 'markers'. After much critical discourse with Rick Hirsch, I determined that the sculptures I wanted to create were in fact markers or signposts, beacons to whatever audience they …

Preparation And Characterization Of Bulk Nanostructures Cu-Co Magnetic Alloys, Michael Gartley
Preparation And Characterization Of Bulk Nanostructures Cu-Co Magnetic Alloys, Michael Gartley
Theses
With new fabrication and measurement technologies now readily available, much attention has been focused on nanostructured materials. The sub-micron scale features of these materials gives them unique physical properties. To understand these properties, conventional methods of materials characterization are not always applicable. Therefore, new methods of characterization are needed for these nanostructured materials. In this project, we have developed nanostructured Cu-Co alloys. Alloys contain 0.3-5.0 wt% cobalt. Alloys are solution-annealed such that the cobalt dissolves in the solid copper phase. By subsequently aging the solid solutions with 1.5% Co at lower temperatures, the cobalt precipitates out of solution and forms …

Evolution Of Solutions To Real-Time Problems, Greg Semeraro
Evolution Of Solutions To Real-Time Problems, Greg Semeraro
Theses
This thesis develops the theory and tools necessary for the determination of a near optimal Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) scheduling policy for an arbitrary multitasking problem specification. The solution is determined using a Genetic Algorithm (GA). All real-time operating systems provide some means of 'tuning' the characteristics of the scheduling policy to accurately meet the application requirements. This thesis shows the applicability of using a GA to determine these parameters for an arbitrary application. In addition, the RTOS parameters considered are broad enough to allow the results to be used for specifying and/or choosing an RTOS for the actual implementation …

Indenting Thin Films Using An Atomic Force Microscope, Cheryl O'Neal
Theses
The feasibility of using a Scanning Probe Microscope to measure nanomechanical properties of thin films was investigated. An Atomic force Microscope was utilized in an attempt to perform nanoindentations to measure the hardness and elastic modulus of several materials. A high modulus cantilever beam was constructed from silicon and a tungsten bead was adhered to its free end. Using this cantilever assembly three samples were indented: a bulk aluminum sample, a 2micrometers thick aluminum film sputtered onto a glass substrate, and a elastomer (rubber band). Subsequent to the indenting process, force curves were captured in the form of tip deflection …

Suggested Considerations For Creating A Coporate Style Manual, Melissa Gentile
Theses
Visual communication is the key to maintaining any kind of corporate style. Companies rely on a variety of visual aids to communicate their image to the public. The desired image that each company has of themselves can be communicated to the public through a corporate signature, a logotype, symbols, typefaces and corporate col ors. All of these visual communicators help the public to identify the company, its sub sidiaries, its activities and its involvement with the public. Companies often have so many visual aids that they have to be outlined in a corporate style manual. A corporate style manual takes …
Technical Challenges In Multiple Master Font Design With Extreme Form Change, Thomas Phinney
Technical Challenges In Multiple Master Font Design With Extreme Form Change, Thomas Phinney
Theses
The hypothesis was that it is possible to create a unique PostScript Multiple Master font which makes a relatively smooth transition between serifed roman and italic letterforms. In the process of creating such a font, the author discovered new principles of Multiple Master font construction and new methodologies for ensuring smooth transitions. The methodology was to first construct a prototype, in order to explore the complications of such a project; the prototype metamorphosed between the roman and italic forms of the Adobe typeface Minion. For the actual project, roman and italic extremes were newly designed, loosely based on historical models …

The Use Of Axially Loaded Flexures For Vibration Isolation In The Omega Laser Facility Target Positioner, Lance Lund
The Use Of Axially Loaded Flexures For Vibration Isolation In The Omega Laser Facility Target Positioner, Lance Lund
Theses
The OMEGA Laser Facility is used for laser driven inertial confinement fusion research at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics. This facility requires 1 millimeter diameter spherical targets placed at the center of an experimental chamber to remain stable to within 5 microns (0.0002"). Occasionally a mounted target will exceed this stability specification due to ambient vibration, so an isolation stage is proposed as a means of eliminating this problem. This isolation stage consists of six parallel flexures that are axially loaded to reduce the resonant frequency of the isolator. Frequency versus axial load, damping, and linearity are …
