The subject of this thesis was "a result of the present school integration crisis" that was occurring at the time it was written in 1964. The paper examines rights granted in the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution, Supreme Court decisions regarding school integration, and the particular situation of school integration in Gadsden, Alabama. Analysis of integration cases prior to 1900, the Supreme Court's 1954 decision, the situation in Little Rock, Arkansas, integration of Alabama Schools, and integration issues in other parts of the US is included.

A linear relationship was found to exist between the logarithms of viscosity and vapor pressure measured at the same temperature for certain homologous series. Previous work by Di Geronimo, healing, and McGuire substantiated this correlation for n-paraflin hydrocarbons, n-paraffin fatty acids and esters, n-alkyl cyclohexanes, n-alkyl benzenes and n-l-monoolefins. Oxide films of lead, tellurium, and their alloys were deposited by reactive sputtering onto substrates and analyzed by X-ray emission spectrography. The sputtering process involved the bombardment of a metallic cathode with positive ions in an atmosphere containing oxygen. The preparation and analysis of these films are described. The unstrained, homogeneous films have good adherence to the substrate and may be prepared to arbitrary thicknesses. Over a range of lead-tellurium oxide compositions these films are transparent and are glassy, rather than crystalline or amorphous solids.

The effect of sea water flow on passivated stainless steel 304 coupled to high purity zinc was studied for more than 1000 hours at 23°C. The corrosion of both members of the couple increased over that of the metals alone. Zinc suffered severe pitting while the Stainless Steel was not visibly corroded, When the metals were exposed alone, zinc corroded uniformly while the stainless steel was not affected at all. The use of zinc coupled to Stainless Steel is not recommended in systems exposed to sea water.

Using three film types, Super Pan Press type-B, Kodak Commercial and Kodak Gravure (improved), and submitting these films to three levels of development and masking, a variety of tone reproduction curves were obtained. Several correlations have been developed which permit calculation of the viscosities of the n-paraffin fatty acids and esters, beginning with formic and including stearic acid.

The correlations were obtained by interrelating the Log u and the Log P_v at the same temperature, where u is the viscosity in centipoise and P_v is the vapor pressure in millimeters Hg. The object of this thesis is to study attrition in a fluidized bed in an attempt to find a reliable method for predicting attrition rate when fluid flow rates and particle sizes are varied.

The system studied consisted of air as the fluidizing median with bauxite and fuller's earth as the solids in suspension. Fluid flow rates were changed while all other variables were held constant. Systems with both large and small particles were studied for each material.

The decrease in power number with increasing Reynolds number sought in this thesis was observed. However, the majority of the data is not an indication of this phenomenon. Only with a relatively high ratio of turbine diameter to vessel diameter could a power number fall-off be obtained. The power number fall-off thus appears to be dependent upon this ratio of turbine diameter to vessel diameter. When the power number fall-off was evidenced, a deep vortex existed despite the presence of full baffling, and large quantities of air were entrained by the liquid.

The absolute viscosity of the normal paraffins C₅H₁₂ to C₂₀H₄₂ was studied to determine a relationship more useful in predicting liquid viscosities than existing correlations such as the methods of Andrade, Souders, Thomas, and Doolittle.

Crude phthalic acid from the fusion processing of alkyd resins was found to be recoverable by solvent extraction, neutralization-acidification, sublimation, distillation, esterificatton with monohydric alcohols, ion exchange or alkyd resin preparation.

The author proposes that alkyd resin preparation, based on analysis of the crude phthalic acid, is the most practical way for the alkyd resin manufacturer to recover the crude phthalic acid. No purification of the crude phthalic acid is necessary for this utilization and the resulting alkyd resin is saleable at a profit.

Intermediate products formea during the initial stapes of the ammonia-catalyzed phenol-formaldehyde reactions, as reported in the literature, are tabulated and % N contents are calculated.

The preparation of 3,4-diamincpyridine from pyridine was investigated, but found to be of little synthetic value because of the low yield obtained on the rearrangement of 4-nitraminopyridine to 3-nitro 4-aminopyridine. In attempt to nitrate nicotinamide-N-oxide resulted in the isolation of nicotinic acid-N-oxide. Attempts to nitrate nicotinic acid-N-oxide were unsuccessful. Attempts to oxidize 3-methylpyridine-N-oxide and 4-nitro-3-methylpyridine were unsuccessful. The nitration of 3-methylpyridine-N-oxide led to the isolation of 2-nitro-5-methylpyridine, which has not previously been reported as a by-product of that reaction.

The previous work done by Frank Cozzarelli on the eleotrodeposition of cellulose from a sodium zincate-urea-cellulose system has been verified, except that zinc was found to deposit on the cathode at all voltages and current densities within the range of the optimum conditions for deposition. The optimum conditions are: voltage - 1.10 to 1.28 volts; current density 0.13 to 1.10 amperes/square foot; electrode material - copper. Current efficiencies range from 0.80 to 5.53%.

The object of this project ras to obtain a reasonable correlation of the effect of velocity, concentration and particle size on apparent viscosity of non-Newtonian slurries.

Through the use of dimensional and graphical analysis an equation, μ/μ_w=1.02(Ak/GC)^.105, was developed which filled these conditions. The average deviation of the apparent viscosity calculated from this equation compared to the experimental value was 14.4%.

The authors believe that this correlation should be tested under a greater variety of conditions of particle size and particle thermal conductivity and for suspending mediums other than water.
