Punctuation Frequency In Selected American Daily Newspapers, Andrew Malcolm

American daily newspapers present millions of punctuated sentences to the public, yet--after an extensive search of literature for similar studies--no comprehensive study of punctuation frequency seems to have been made before this study. It is hypothesized (1) that punctuation appears at predictable rates in the main news section of American daily newspapers, (2) that statistically significant differences exist in punctuation frequency between each of five selected newspapers and--by group--between those of large and small cities, and (3) that statistically significant differences exist in punctuation frequency between 1976, 1966, 1956 and 1946. The development of an axisymmetric ring finite element is presented and FORTRAN subroutines for implementing the capability into the MSC/NASTRAN finite element program are given. The element is an eightnoded isoparametric quadrilateral of quadratic order. The following matrices and capabilities are developed: 1. stiffness matrix for homogeneous isotropic materials, 2. thermal conductance matrix for homogeneous isotropic materials, 3. calculation of equivalent nodal forces due to temperature loads, 4. calculation of stresses, and 5. plotting of undeformed and deformed structures. Poly (ethylene oxide) is a polymer of ethylene oxide. It is one of the classes of synthetic water soluble resins which are commercially available. The properties of poly (ethylene oxide) as a desensitizer in the fountain solution were studied. The solution of this resin was compared to gum arabic solution. The investigation included the study of the physical properties of the solutions at different concentrations as well as press performance. The feasibility of developing a method of correlation and prediction, for mixtures of two solvents containing a dissolved salt has been studied. The procedure consisted of arriving at the interaction parameters for the three binary systems (solvent 1-solvent 2, solvent 1-salt, solvent 2-salt) and using these to calculate the ternary results. Attempts to generate interaction parameters for the solvent-salt binaries by means of the Wilson equation were unsuccessful, whereas, use of the NRTL equation resulted in a very good fit of the binary data.

A Classroom Experience with Self-Image Enhancement as a Factor in Academic Achievement, by Katherine Kellems Moore, investigates the connection between self-image enhancement and academic achievement in junior high students. The study was conducted with 131 randomly selected English I students in a suburban St. Louis school. Moore hypothesized that students who experienced an improvement in self-image would show corresponding gains in academic performance. Over the course of the 20-week study, students participated in personal growth activities designed to enhance self-awareness and clarify values.

After spending his childhood on the family estate, Rancho Guajome, the young Cave completed his education at a military academy in Tennessee and St. Vincent's Academy in Los Angeles, California. Utilizing his skills as an engineer, Couts lived for a year in Central America while assisting in the construction of a railroad line in Guatemala.

PART 1: THE FORMATION OF 2-METHYLAMIN0-N-0CTADECYLETHAHESULF0NAMIDE FROM 2-CHLOROETHANESULFONYL CHLORIDE. 2-Chloroethanesulfonyl chloride (2) was reacted with octadecylamine (3) in the presence of triethylamine to give N-octadecylethcnesulfonamide (4), which was reacted with methylamine to give 2-methylamino-N-octadecylethanesulfonamide (1). The first reaction involves formation of the sulfonamide and dehydrohalogenation. The second reaction is a Michael addition. The formation of 1 is favored in a polg.r, protic medium. An aprotic, less polar medium produces an unwanted di-Michael adduct CH3N(CH2CH2S02NHCl8H37)2 (8), and polymer. The intramolecular hydrogen bonded structure of 1 is discussed. Many investigations of the detection threshold of the human visual system have been conducted, and a few recognition threshold studies can be found, however no identification threshold data are available. This paper documents research on the observer's identification threshold for an alphanumeric resolution test object presented at various average luminance levels, contrasts, and contrast polarities. These factors affected the identification threshold in a similar way to the effects they exert on the observer's detection and recognition thresholds; the test object contrast being the most significant factor. With the aid of a rotational viscometer, several transient phenomena were studied with different polymer solutions. In order to be acquainted with the operations of the rotational viscometer, viscosity measurements were made on polystyrene solution of a 7.14 wt. % NBS-2-35967 in a 35 - 65 mixture of aroclor and TCP, polyisobutylene (16.5% in mineral spirits), Indopol H-1900 (polyisobutylene) and 4.5% polyisobutylene in Primol 355. All these were done at a temperature of 77°F, except for Indopol H-1900 which was done at different temperatures. The results are listed in the section of tables and graphs.

The braille production system is a slow and antiquated process. The end product is expensive, heavy, and bulky. A new, more efficient braille production system was designed, using computerized transcription, thermographic printing, and automated binding and finishing. Computerized transcription programs are readily available from a variety of sources; automated binding and finishing is a common feature of modern printing technology. A series of experiments was performed to evaluate the physical qualities of the braille cells produced by thermography.
